It’s taken me a very long time to write the review because I was waiting for my anger over indifference on top of mistakes on top of errors to wear off and for me to remember the lovely hotel where I had my wedding last summer. But, I’m still annoyed by it, and when I popped in recently to collect a left behind item, the attitude of the reception staff brought it all back. It’s like they’re too important to be anything other than reasonably efficient. I can’t imagine where the coolness comes from. Dukes Bar might provide a good summation of the hotel’s arrogance. On a visit to the UK to finalise all the wedding plans in the spring, we met with friends in the Dukes Bar for afternoon ‘James Bond’ martinis. At something like £27 a pop, and in their spiritual home, we expected more than for the ice-cold bartender to wheel a trolley over, peel a bit of lemon and pour in some pre-mixed drink. But that’s what we got and considered ourselves grateful that we were able to get a table - at 4pm as it was. Fast forward to a visit to Dukes Hotel in Dubai in the autumn, the martinis were prepared with a flourish and a show - the vermouth swirled and flicked out, the martini mixed, the stories told, explanations made and good feeling and value for money had all round. I bought into the hotel when I booked the St James Suite for an afternoon tea for my guests between the ceremony and the reception. The events manager was fantastic: helpful, friendly, super-efficient and we had it all sorted in no time. Then we started to add rooms, negotiating for ourselves to start with, asking directly for a rate that matched what we were seeing on Booking.com at the time. I didn’t expect favours but they were grudging about extending the rate to family / wedding party - and we were only able to take 3 extra rooms, though if given some time to advise guests of the rate, many more of them would have taken rooms at the hotel. The hotel is lovely, tucked away in St James’s - old school, classic British charm. The ancient elevator with its velvet bench a novelty - until the noise of its doors wears thin in the middle of the night as they clang together just down the corridor from where you’re trying to sleep. The sitting room and cigar lounge are both lovely - IF you can get a table; and if there is an empty table, there’ll be no service. However, GBR breakfasts are totally delicious and definitely worth including. We were upgraded, generously, in peak season. The laundry took my dress, crumpled from flying, and hung it, pristine, on the outside of the wardrobe. Where the groom, checking that some flowers had been delivered to the room before I checked in, was sure to see it! The AC was a welcome relief during a mini heatwave, but the bathroom ceiling dripped (couldn’t keep the dress in there then…) and inexplicably the cleaning staff insisted on moving my toiletries every day to display the hotel’s miniature Floris bottles in with their usual prominence, though I clearly wasn’t using them and needed the space. I had to ask for a kettle and a long mirror - I wouldn’t have thought that they’d provide if not already installed, so do ask! On the day the room service lunch was perfect, the post wedding afternoon tea was wonderful and waiting staff were lovely; delicious food, heavenly tea. The stay was fine, just not special. Maybe an afternoon tea for 40 and 4 rooms just wasn’t enough to warrant any kind of recognition from the staff, let alone attention from the management. Sometimes I felt that I had to start from the beginning to explain who the hell I was and what I was doing there every time I spoke to anyone. Maybe they knew and didn’t care. Maybe I’m an annoying and demanding person and they just didn’t like me - I think that’s unlikely given their main summer clientele though. It’s not like it’s a huge hotel with hundreds of rooms - and I’ve certainly had more personal service and a sense of being cared for in some of those huge properties. Then the billing was a disaster. The day before I was due to check out I asked for a copy of the bill to date so I could check it over. Huge, stupid errors - venue deposit and a room pre-payment not taken into account, random breakfast charges, laundry billed when already paid on my husband’s room before the wedding. I can’t imagine how it would have been sorted out if we had just been checking out while on the way to the airport. I had to take time to go line by line and explain, prove, etc. Then the next day, when it had been finalized (with over £1000 taken off the bill) and we were checking out, it had all been prematurely charged to a card given only for holding the reservation - resulting in a huge 10-day hassle where I lost about £200 in credit card interest and exchange rates trying to get the money refunded, which was done incorrectly and then again. Utterly, utterly infuriating - and not a word of apology from anyone at reception or in accounts - only the long-suffering events manager who had tried her best to help sort it all out, while I was trying to enjoy a honeymoon. Over 6 months later I’m still cross just writing about it. Then, the final insult - to receive the standard post-stay questionnaire, explain the situation, because I’d much rather deal directly with the hotel on something like this which is probably a one-off (though check your bill. Twice. Seriously…) But no response to the feedback. Perhaps those irritating questionnaires aren’t read; well, this will be.

We usually stay elsewhere when we come to London , but we thought we’d try something different this time . Dukes was lovely , staff very attentive and the room large . We opted to upgrade to a luxury room , which was on the top floor with pleasant views . The bed was large but as it was two singles joined together there was a large gap down the middle , a mattress topper would easily remedy it. We had a small dressing room too but no full length mirror in the room at all which was odd ? The bath filled with water when showering so I was ankle deep by the time I’d finished but the shower itself was a power shower which is always refreshing . We had breakfast in the room in the morning and this was lovely . Dukes is nice but expensive at £400 a night so we probably wouldn’t stay here again as we can get more value for money elsewhere with the same service.

Its not surprising that they have won a number of awards as the hotel has exemplary service - the restaurant GB'R is wonderful - a little expensive but worth it, the only negative comment is the hotel does not have many if any rooms with a separate shower that is not in the bath - I would recommend that the next rennovation they remove the bath's altogether and replace with showers.

This was a pre-booked/ordered private dinner for nine. Very well organised with placenames and selected menu items listed. The salmon starter was stunning and I could have happily eaten all the starters and dispensed with the main. However that's not the done thing and anyway I had pre-ordered the steak. This was also delicious so I was not at all disappointed. A lovely quiet retreat.

This was my second stay at Dukes and it was lovely! The location is great and it really feels like classic London. It has so much more charm than other chain hotels. The bar is fantastic and only hotel guests can reserve tables!
