Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

Have just returned from afternoon tea in this lovely traditional hotel. Beautiful setting , a little courtyard , lit for Christmas with a tree and candlelit lanterns. A lovely festive setting. Joined friends for an afternoon tea and fizz. On arrival we were shown into a lounge area which was very tastefully decorated in a traditional style. Very relaxed and lovely festive touches everywhere. A very good selection of sandwiches and cakes. The scones were warm and very scrumptious. A choice of plain and also cranberry and apricot which was delicious. Mini mince pies went down well also. Service was very good but not intrusive. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Looking forward to a second visit

Didn’t think a 5 star hotel could be as disappointing as this was - on arrival I had to go into the hotel to let them know I was outside with a vehicle which required parking and to ask for bags to be taken in - check in was professional enough. The room we were given was in the basement - floaty and the Valance round he bed appeared to be filthy - they kindly changed our room at which point I realised it wasn’t filthy it was well worn - in fact the Valance on the beds appear to date back to the time the earliest Duke resides there. The Cocktail bar is worth a visit but - this also leaves a bitter taste - the hotel has a so called cigar bar - this is a covered external area for people to smoke cigars - provided you buy them from the Cocktail Bar that is and heaven forbid you should dare request to have a cigarette there - the answer is a firm NO - the reason given - it’s for cigar smokers only - if you want a cigarette you have to stand outside the front of the hotel under the flimsiest of umbrellas like a second class citizen - doesn’t matter the fact you are resident in the hotel - as far as I am concerned this is a twice visit hotel - the first one and the last one and I am not sure I would stay here even if every other hotel in London was fully booked

The hotel is lovely as are the staff. Great location as we were shopping around Bond Street and dining just round the corner at The Wolseley. The hotel was dressed for Christmas and the cocktails in the cocktail bar help take away the chill of the day. Breakfast was very good and the staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The rating would have been 5 out of 5 but our room was a little on the small side (OK for one night) - smaller than the equivalent room at the Ritz or Dorchester and our window looked straight into an office building which meant curtains closed! I guess you just need to know what room to ask for. We would stay again though.

We always stay here in London. It’s always wonderful. The bar under Alessandro’s supervision is one of the best in the city. The drawing room is open late and this time I had a wonderful set of sandwiches after I came back from a long play at the Noel Coward theater nearby. All theaters are nearby, which is great! We love this hotel and its lovely, courteous staff. Old fashioned hospitality at its very best.
