We wanted to give my mum, in her eighties, a special birthday treat. We met her from the Hull train and after a short taxi ride we were outside The Landmark arriving under the canopy between Marylebone Station and the hotel to be greeted by the marvellous Rupert, the bowler-hatted hotel doorman, a cross between your favourite twinkly uncle, a character from Dickens and a town crier. When Rupert shouts (I mean bellows) 'TAXI' one is on the doorstep before the last echo has faded. Rupert labelled our luggage and directed us to reception where the staff were simply lovely, attentive and calm, making us feel like the only guests in the hotel. One of our rooms was ready so we were able to freshen up before taking mum to lunch followed by the matinee of 'Annie' We had booked two superior rooms which turned out to be adjacent and identical mirror images of each other. They were simply beautiful but also very practical. We've stayed in a few five star hotels around the world so are not easily impressed but these rooms were exceptional. Throughout the hotel the housekeeping staff greeted us as we passed adding to the sense of welcome. After the theatre we met up with our daughters and a friend for a meal in the Winter Garden where we were able to mix and match dishes from the set and a la carte menus. The Winter Garden is set in a large central area of the hotel with a very high glass roof creating a huge space but with large potted palms giving a sense of style and intimacy, a pianist on the mezzanine played throughout our meal adding to the atmosphere. The front of house team were charming and attentive without being intrusive and had noted my wife's gluten intolerance. We have had experience of lightly toasted sliced supermarket-bought gluten free bread in Michelin starred restaurants in the past, so she was delighted to be given a selection of freshly baked rolls which she thought were simply sublime. We were spaced far enough from other diners to be very comfortable and had a truly delicious meal at a pace carefully co-ordinated by the waiting staff. We all slept soundly and were sufficiently recovered to enjoy the international gourmet feast which is breakfast at The Landmark. We checked out and in a jiffy Rupert, who remembered our names from the previous day despite never having seen us before, had us installed in the back of a black cab. This all happened a week ago and last night I spoke to my mum on the telephone, she felt like she'd had a fortnight's holiday in one day and couldn't stop thinking and talking about her wonderful night at The Landmark. In summary it was everything we hoped it might be and much more besides. The building is beautiful but it was the wonderful staff who really made the difference to our stay. Was it cheap? No. Was it good value? You bet it was, for mum the experience of a lifetime and how can you put a price on that. I think we need to start saving up for a return trip!

Normally I wouldn't choose this location and would have picked a hotel in Mayfair or Piccadilly, which has a lot more dining choices and closer to the shopping and theatres in West End. But I needed to be in Marylebone so The Landmark appeared to be quite convenient. Turned out our two day stay was absolutely outstanding. Hotel overall is well preserved and charming. Room was decent in size (difficult given it's London) and nicely appointed. Breakfast delivered to the room in a flash and was great. But what stood it above the rest was the service. Prompt and always with a smile, we were suitably impressed.

We visited for a few relaxed drinks and unfortunately witnessed Theo receive a barrage of abuse from an obnoxious group of customers. He remained calm and collected despite the fact they were extremely patronising towards him and I feel somewhat xenophobic. Nonetheless he and his team continued to provide us with the fantastic service we have came to know at this prestigious establishment. We look forward to our next visit in hopefully more civilised circumstances.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Landmark Hotel for a few nights the end of August. I was very pleasantly surprised. The staff are all professional and welcoming. I arrived early and expected to have to put my luggage in the storeroom until the check in time but the gentleman at the front desk managed to let me check into my room before the allocated check in time. The Landmark is conveniently located and very accessible to some of London's largest attractions. It is a short walk from Baker Street Underground and Oxford Street. The breakfast buffet had an extensive selection of continental, English and Oriental items to choose from. The buffet displays were very inviting. The room itself was a decent size with all the amenities you could need including a decent size flat screen TV with a wide selection of channels. The bed was large very comfortable with beautiful soft linen. I would highly recommend anyone passing through London to choose the Landmark as their base.
