You must stay here

Impressive little hotel. The room was perfectly appointed and the decor is gorgeous. The chief concierge Levente was a life saver helping us with a list of things we needed to find. Ines at the front desk was lovely as well as Declan, Lorien and Piotr with F&B. I highly recommend staying here.

What a Wonderful Experience

Everything about this hotel is simply excellent. My two sisters and my daughter and I spent two nights here, and then one night a week later, with a trip to the Lake District in between. Through the hotel, we seamlessly arranged a private car from and later back to Heathrow. When we arrived, the hotel was expecting us, and management had upgraded both of our rooms, which were ready early. All of the rooms we had are extraordinary: the Master and Junior suites each have an upstairs and a downstairs, and the Superior Room (with twin beds) was a bit smaller but very comfortable and quiet. Excellent beds and luxurious linens. All of the bathrooms were very satisfactory, with excellent showers. Indeed, the whole hotel is quiet, friendly, and elegant. We had tea and scones on the covered terrace, and watched a family enjoy a gorgeous full tea next to us. Breakfasts (and dinner when we chose not to go out) are very good, in a cosy and airy restaurant. The staff--from the first emails to make arrangements to saying our last goodbyes--was really amazing, friendly and familiar with our visit, cheerful and professional. They were all kind and happy to help. Particular compliments to the concierge team. The location--in Bloomsbury near the British Museum--is terrific, in easy walking distance to Covent Garden and Euston Station and the theater district. I have stayed in several other hotels in London over the years, but The Montague is now the only hotel for me. I even recommended it to a friend who lives in London to pass on to her visiting friends as a suggestion. Great memories, and I look forward to returning soon.

Great place to stay in London

Great location, service, and rooms. Close to several museums (besides the British Museum ), Covent Garden, variety of restaurants, bus and underground stops. The breakfast option was a great way to start the morning and the little touches such as a variety of free newspapers were appreciated.

Could be better with upgrades

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

The hotel is located across the street from the British museum. A half block away is Russell Square Park where me and my wife had breakfast every morning at the Italian cafe. My wife and I were given a complimentary upgrade that we very much appreciated. This is an old hotel so you must accept everything that goes along with an old building. I say this because one evening at 9:45pm my wife and I were watching TV in the living room and I heard water. I went into the bedroom and water was gushing all over the bed from the chandelier. It seems that the guest in the room above was taking a shower and either the shower drain or water line broke. I notified the hotel staff and they moved us to a new suite. You should also note that the chairs in the second suite definitely needed new cushions and upolstry. The staff in this hotel is very cheery and accommodating. Work was being done on the outside of the building and covered the entire exterior. The one surprise I had was that even though the word gardens is in the name, you have no access to it. I was told it is privately owned by a duke. Big disappointment! The hotel is on a quiet street and accessible to bus, subway lines and restaurants. We used Uber a lot. It was not that expensive and much more convenient than using the bus and subways where you have a much higher risk of catching something too. In addition, if you are in a black cab the meter will continue to run while you're sitting still in traffic.  Would I stay there again, probably not. The broken drain line reminded me that old buildings  have many hidden problems and I now prefer more modern hotels. But if you're looking for an old, charming, British hotel this one will fit the bill nicely.

Fred the superstar

We visited the hotel for a celebration birthday weekend in the City. We had a fabulous time. In particular we should mention 'Fred' and 'Everett' who both went the extra mile to make everything perfect for us. Nothing was too much trouble and their knowledge of London made our stay an absolute pleasure.
