You might still spot politicians enjoying a reprieve from Parliament at The Royal Horseguards. It began life as The National Liberal Club in 1884 and was commandeered by the Ministry of Defense during both world wars to headquarter the M15 and M16, Britain's secret intelligence organizations. After undergoing a full renovation in 2008, sparkling chandeliers and contemporary accents join the oil paintings and rich red and gold furnishings that still retain the air of Westminster.

This is not as they describe it and I wonder if any of their reviews are real. The furniture gives you slivers because it is in such bad condition and the mini bar in the deluxe room consists of a bag of stale popcorn and 2 cans of coke, one of which has an artificial sweetener that is being investigated in my country back home.

We have been regularly staying at Horseguards for around 5 years and always enjoy the location and comfort of this hotel. Unfortunately this time wasn't so good. We were given a free upgrade on check in, which was lovely. When we reached the room, we turned on the tap in the sink and it wouldn't turn off, meaning lots of hot water going down the sink. We couldn't get an answer on the phone so we went down to reception and they logged the problem. We did have to go down again about 30 mins later as we were worried about getting out for our reservations. A maintenance man then arrived and fixed the problem. When returning back from our day, in the evening we tried to turn the TV on, but got nothing. We called reception and they sent someone up who tried their best but realised that there was no connection to the WiFi and therefore would need resetting the next day, we were only staying one night. When going to bed one of the side wall lights would dim but would not turn off completely, we ended up taking the bulb out, it was too late to call again. On check out we were then told the upgrade charge had been added to our room, which we pointed out was supposed to be free. The receptionist then took the details of all the problems with the room and apologised. I would like to point out that all staff were friendly and helpful. We do pay a lot of money to stay in this hotel and rightly so but do feel we didn't get what we paid for on this occasion.

Welcoming and unique, the Horseguard was the perfect hotel to experience London. A quiet location minutes walk to Trafalgar Square. The staff made our stay uncomplicated and were happy to help whenever we needed. The room was quiet and had everything we needed and the bed was super comfy.

The Royal Horseguards has always been a lovely hotel with a fantastic location and truly excellent service from the staff. The atmosphere and location make it a place you genuinely want to return to. Unfortunately, it must also be said that the hotel appears very worn in several areas and lacks proper maintenance. It is clear that the facilities have not been properly cared for over a longer period of time. The restaurant in particular felt rather depressing, with large stains on the ceiling that certainly do not contribute to a pleasant dining experience. I was also promised a king size bed, but the room only had a queen size bed. In addition, the TV in the room was unstable and repeatedly turned itself on and off during my stay, which was frustrating. That is a shame, because the hotel still has plenty of charm and potential. If you improve the maintenance and bring the standard back to the level the hotel’s history and location deserve, I would be very happy to return. Until then, however, I will unfortunately choose another hotel on my next visit to London.

What a fantastic hotel, well placed to move around London. An excellent room with a view over the embankment and the London eye. The breakfast spread was well presented with plenty of choice. The bed was a king size and very comfortable so an excellent sleep was had. I can't wait to visit this hotel again for our next wedding anniversary.
