The Royal Horseguards in London, England

You might still spot politicians enjoying a reprieve from Parliament at The Royal Horseguards. It began life as The National Liberal Club in 1884 and was commandeered by the Ministry of Defense during both world wars to headquarter the M15 and M16, Britain's secret intelligence organizations. After undergoing a full renovation in 2008, sparkling chandeliers and contemporary accents join the oil paintings and rich red and gold furnishings that still retain the air of Westminster.

Stride across manicured lawns to the banks of the River Thames and follow it south. Veer right to walk along St. James's Park. Stare down the stern guards outside Buckingham Palace and give the Queen a nod. Circle back to The Royal Horseguards for afternoon tea and apricot scones on the sunlit terrace. Raise a glass to Churchill at the bar named after him – he was one of The National Liberal Club’s most prominent members.

Booked in over the London Marathon weekend as a treat. Made booking back in January and when got to desk there was a little confusion but it was swiftly and efficiently dealt with. Staff and amenities were great, only gripe was that the king bed was tiny and although we had asked for a view all we got was a view of a brick wall..

We stayed two nights here to celebrate a special birthday, we were given a room upgrade to garden view, which also meant we had a fabulous jawdropping view of the Thames from our balcony, it was just beautiful. The double room was a little small, but that was more than compensated for by the view and the room furnishings, beds being turned down for us at night. Breakfast was excellent, so much choice, buffet style but the hot food was hot, and well prepared, just a perfect ambiance. Great location close to all attractions, less than five mins from Embankment tube station.Thank you.

This was our second trip to London, both times staying at the Royal Horseguards. First time was business, second time pleasure. It is the BEST location in all of London for walkable touring of the entire city.

My wife was running the London Marathon on the Sunday. We arrived on the Saturday having booked a deluxe river VIEW room several months earlier. We tried to check in at 2:30 as we had a taxi waiting for us, so we could attend our nieces birthday. We were told the room wouldn't be ready for another 40 minutes, but we could wait. Having already explained we had a taxi waiting, we returned at 21:30. When checking the view, it was difficult to see anything of the river as there are huge trees blocking out 90%+ of any river VIEW from our room on the 6th floor. Having tried to call reception for 10 minutes without reply I went to see the night manager. The receptionist insisted it was a river VIEW room and that there were no alternatives available as the room was fully booked. I told her it was a tree view room and that I would leave and check in to a quality hotel if they had nothing available. We were then provided with an alternative Executive room on the same floor as a free upgrade. The view of the river is still extremely obstructed, but it was better than the first and my wife needed to get some rest. Having completed the Marathon my wife and I invited eight members of her family to join us for a drink on the terrace as we had all been out for over 7 hours supporting her from various vantage points on route. I had to complain again having asked 3 times and having waited 15 minutes before anyone was prepared to take our order. When it came one of the drinks (a pint of lager) had been poured into two half pint glasses. When we questioned why, we were told they had no pint glasses as it had been busy? At the time we had this terrible experience there was only one other guest having a drink with a laptop. This is a so called 5 star hotel that caters for functions and events? Having asked twice for milk to go with the tea, that came 10 minutes after the tea which was by this point cold. We were offered a discount on the drinks bill. When checking out, our bill was several hundred pounds more than it should have been. This is a beautiful hotel in terms of the quality of the building and decor, but the service is much more Faulty Towers. By the way, when a manager explained about the rooms, I was told you can have better views on the floors above. All arenas and football clubs have to clearly state in their marketing and on their tickets if there is the slightest bit of an obstructed view from your seat. Apparently not 5* hotels. This experience completely ruined what was supposed to be a very special weekend.

My first - but not last, I hope - visit to the Royal Horseguards which is perfectly situated for exploring London on both sides of the Thames. Once the room assignment was finalized (it took three tries), I settled in very comfortably to enjoy peace and quiet and manage what I could with an injured foot. This is when location is everything as I could easily hobble to many points of interest and, failing that, sit in the Embankment Gardens out back and watch the world go by.
