The London Stafford Once Home to SOE Agent Nancy Wake

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 12 hours ago

The Stafford London that dates from the 17thC is a spectacular highly reputed 5 star venue in the heart of London concealed elegantly in the St James Mayfair mews. On a recent drinks only visit to the American Bar garden veranda I supped the famed sassy cider with my son in law and we were patently regaled by the exceptional hospitality and polite courtesy of the duty staff. The Stafford London was also where one of the most renowned British SOE Agents Nancy Wake (1912-2011) stayed 2001/3 stayed as an esteemed and possibly most renowned guest, with part of her bills paid by the Prince Of Wales. Nancy Wake was dubbed `The White Mouse' 1943-45 by the brutal Nazis who hunted her down day and night and all members and some estimated 700 escapees on the Pat O`Leary French Resistance freedom route from Marseilles, when she served relentlessly as a fugitive courier and constantly remained on the roulette wheel of capture, torture and certain execution. Nancy Wake was awarded the WW2 George Medal, French Legion of Honour, the Medal of Freedom from the US and Australia and Badge of Gold from NZ where she was born. Lest We Forget

Can’t wait to visit the Stafford London again! Perfect location near St. James’s palace, easy to get anywhere. Wonderful made to order breakfast, room very comfy, staff outstanding and helped with anything we needed from theater tickets to tours. Our favorite was The American Bar- truly the best!

A hotel Gem in London

A truly lovely low key boutique 5 star hotel in a perfect part of London…walking distance to major shopping, Buckingham and next to the lovely Green park, and tube station. Staff are exceptional, the dining and tea area is beautifully appointed and the food is wonderful. We have stayed in the Carriage house twice….lovely! They have a very special bar ..”The American Bar” with sports caps hanging from all over the world …a very unique part of the ambiance. We will be back!

Charming 5 Star hotel with Michelin star restaurant.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The Stafford is a 5 star hotel. The location in central London in the St James neighborhood is very convenient. Easy access to the underground station at Green Park. The staff is helpful, friendly, professional and very attentive. The recently earned Michelin star Michael Caines at the Stafford is a treat not to be missed. The amuse bouche were chicken liver pate dainty tarts and truffle garlic cheese puffs. Light and delicious. The sea salt and rosemary biscuits were soft and fluffy delivered piping hot with a quenelle of butter. The starter was a marinated red pepper and aubergine salad with a light flavorful vinaigrette topped with tiny leaves of fresh basil. Delicious. For main dishes my wife had the duck breast and I had the English lamb chops. Perfectly cooked and topped with a wine sauce that matched it the meats. The wait staff was great. A special shout out to Sam the sommelier! His enthusiasm and knowledge of wine and his storytelling skills filled out the evening. Stop for an afternoon coffee or tea. Try the scones and clotted cream. Go to the American Bar for drinks or a pub menu. It’s been a very enjoyable stay that we highly recommend.

Stafford London — an exceptional hotel.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The Stafford is truly an exceptional hotel. The buildings and rooms have the character and luster of fine aged wines. The staff responded to our needs quickly and thoroughly, being neither overly solicitous nor arrogant. They were exceedingly professional, while still being warm, in performing their duties at a five star level. The food in the hotel restaurants was delicious, and the service met the same level of excellence as the rest of the hotel. We would highly recommend the Stafford London to our friends.

It's all about the staff at The Stafford! My favorite hotel in London and probably in the world! If you can't stay there stop by the bar...not to be missed. Look it up when you're there.

My cousin and I had the most fabulous trip! The Stafford London was the most perfect, wonderful hotel, and we could not be any happier!

The staff was amazing, and yes, please let Alan and Nick know how much they helped us, as this was my very first trip to London!

We so appreciated the perks, and enjoyed the wine in our room!
