Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos

In the ancient capital of Laos is a resort of extraordinary brilliance—Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao is shrouded in leafy wonderment high atop the Hill of Kites in Luang Prabang. With views of colliding rivers, soaring mountains, and ancient temples, this luxury resort embraces its Asian history and French influences. The collection of rooms and suites are exquisitely appointed eschewing ornate embellishments and opting for cleaner and more calming motifs. Terrazo baths, rich organic cottons, spacious surroundings and plush textiles are just a few of the unexpected pleasures concealed behind closed doors. Large picture windows frame seemingly airbrushed views of the breathtaking landscape.

Dining at La Résidence is an explosion of exotic flavors that marry Laotian cuisine with traditional European tastes. Illuminated by a fleet of lanterns, Phou Savanh Restaurant's setting is as appetizing as the menu. French and Laotian cuisine complements one another for lunch and dinner. The Five Hundred Candle Dinner is an amazing culinary experience and one to surely ignite romance. A table for two is positioned on the resort's hilltop where 500 flickering candles set the stage for an elegant dinner and live music accompaniment. End the evening on a high note at the Doc Champa Bar, an open-air lounge that also serves a delightful afternoon tea. Home to the nation's first luxury spa, Mekong Spa is superb sanctuary featuring an array of treatments, steam room and a refreshing infinity-edge pool. Take a two-wheel trek and enjoy a scenic bike ride stopping only to enjoy a gourmet, chef-prepared picnic of regional specialties.

This hotel was a haven of luxury and comfort...and service. I rode a hotel bike around LP each day; and then returned and relaxed in the stunning pool. The room was so comfortable and elegant. The food at the hotel was some of the best I have tasted. I commented to the F&B Director, Mr. Hafner, about how delicious the food was, and that I particularly liked the tamarind sauce. Upon my departure, I received the recipe for the tamarind sauce and a bottle to take home with me. Classy!!

This is such a lovely hotel. The service is outstanding. We travel extensively staying in five star hotels all the time and we are discerning. The staff were so so friendly and helpful. We found that literally nothing was too much trouble for them. Our whole stay was such a relaxing experience from the minute we were picked up at the airport and welcomed by the driver with a fresh coconut each to drink from, until we were dropped back at the airport at the end of our stay after complimentary late check out. The hotel is situated just out of town so it is nice and peaceful. Staying in a hotel in town would be noisy and we were so glad that we chose the Belmond. There are two complimentary hotel air conditioned vehicles to take you into town whenever you want to go. When you are in town and ready to go back to the hotel all you had to do was go into a local hotel, shop or restaurant and they would quite happily call the hotel for you and in no time the vehicle was there to take you back. There are set times too for the vehicles to take you into town and to pick you up from there, but we preferred to go adhoc on our own. which was never a problem. We went on the hotel's own beautiful large wooden boat for the Mekong river sunset cruise. What an absolutely amazing experience this was, something we will remember forever. We would strongly recommend anyone staying to do this, it is a must, but you need to book. They don't mix you with other guests, the cruise was exclusive to us with the boat man and a waiter to serve drinks and snacks whilst we laid back on the boat's day beds enjoying the views, watching the sunset, cruising along the Mekong. We had very relaxing nice massages at the hotel spa. The hotel has two lovely swimming pools, the smaller one by the spa being extremely peaceful. The other pool was peaceful too. Breakfast was fantastic, everything you could wish for and we loved the omelettes they cooked freshly for us, the local sausages, high quality cheeses and freshly squeezed juices. We like to eat breakfast late and even if we arrived at breakfast close to the end of service we were told not to rush, to take our time and assured that they would not take anything away until we were completely finished and they were true to their word. The restaurant is in a beautiful setting, overlooking the swimming pool with wonderful views of the mountains in the background. We had dinner in the hotel on two evenings and the food was excellent.

Myself and my wife visited Luang Prabang as part of a SE Asia trip which included Cambodia and Singapore as well. We loved our stay at the Belmond in Siem Reap and were eager to try out another property from the same brand. In the end it was probably the high expectations that dampened our spirit a little bit, but in most ways our stay was very adequate. Our rate included an excellent breakfast - it is served by the pool with very good hilltop views . The breakfast included a few local selections and adequate western/asian items. We were upgraded to a slightly larger room than the one we had booked. The room had great views of the hillside, excellent air-conditioning, a mosquito net (which I found unnecessary) and was kept well stocked daily supplies of water and fruit. The concierge made some excellent recommendations for local food, made the reservations and arranged for the complimentary hotel limo as well. We were picked up each night via the limo as well. All in all, an expensive hotel but worth it.

Really nothing to complain about Belmond. Five star is expensive in this magically laid back city. They pick you up, they fall over themselves to do the right thing - things that are common in Lao hospitality and culture. The most important reason for staying at the belmond is the lovely view of the mountains, from the restaurant and from the premium rooms 50x facing the hills. Great swimming pool. Great breakfast (with champagne). It’s true the air conditioning is a bit noisy. But that’s the same all over Luang Prabang. The suite is large but not as great a view as the rooms. Book your site visit tours from the tourist shops in town because it costs ridiculously expensive through the hotel Conceirge. The 3 hour jungle trek to the waterfalls is memorable. Otherwise a great hotel to chill a few days.
