Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos
In the ancient capital of Laos is a resort of extraordinary brilliance—Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao is shrouded in leafy wonderment high atop the Hill of Kites in Luang Prabang. With views of colliding rivers, soaring mountains, and ancient temples, this luxury resort embraces its Asian history and French influences. The collection of rooms and suites are exquisitely appointed eschewing ornate embellishments and opting for cleaner and more calming motifs. Terrazo baths, rich organic cottons, spacious surroundings and plush textiles are just a few of the unexpected pleasures concealed behind closed doors. Large picture windows frame seemingly airbrushed views of the breathtaking landscape.
Dining at La Résidence is an explosion of exotic flavors that marry Laotian cuisine with traditional European tastes. Illuminated by a fleet of lanterns, Phou Savanh Restaurant's setting is as appetizing as the menu. French and Laotian cuisine complements one another for lunch and dinner. The Five Hundred Candle Dinner is an amazing culinary experience and one to surely ignite romance. A table for two is positioned on the resort's hilltop where 500 flickering candles set the stage for an elegant dinner and live music accompaniment. End the evening on a high note at the Doc Champa Bar, an open-air lounge that also serves a delightful afternoon tea. Home to the nation's first luxury spa, Mekong Spa is superb sanctuary featuring an array of treatments, steam room and a refreshing infinity-edge pool. Take a two-wheel trek and enjoy a scenic bike ride stopping only to enjoy a gourmet, chef-prepared picnic of regional specialties.

Reviews for Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao
Amazing service and friendly staff. The setting is exceptional. Some things in the rooms might seem outdated (e.g. regular keys) but this adds to the authentic experience. I would stay here again! Don’t miss the coconut cupcakes at the morning breakfast buffet!

Stayed here for 4 nights over Chinese New Year in Feb with out trip to Luang Prabang as a mix of culture and relaxation - after all this is pitched as a place of serenity (i.e. calm and peaceful). The hotel itself is nicely done, the staff were very friendly and a good view on a clear day across the valley. As we spent a mix of out and about and chilling by the pool we ate at the hotel quite a bit, the food was generally pretty good with a mix of dishes. Cocktails and drinks at the small bar in the evening were good. We had a villa room with a view and it was comfortable for us, with a setup bed for our daughter. The rooms have a colonial feel, which is fine, but cant help feel it needs a bit of an update. The spa was excellent, we had very good experiences there and friendly staff. If you do stay don't be too concerned about it being "out of town", the hotel runs shuttles and easy to get in and out. Now for the downsides or "opportunities for improvement": 1) Noise -- The house next door was pretty loud, and not the Belmond's fault as its out of their control, but we came back from a long morning on the Mekong at about 2pm with a view to chill by the pool... but nope, at 2:15pm on a Tuesday there was VERY LOUD badly sung karaoke belting out from next door. We suffered for an hour or so by the pool but had to give up as we had headaches. We had planned to eat in that evening, but we got changed and headed straight back out as didnt want to suffer that all night. Fortunately it had stopped by the time we got back 2) Ash everywhere -- again, appears to be next door love burning stuff... constant bonfires going, ash floating in the pool, on the sun lounges... on the Wednesday morning as we were leaving the air was bad with smoke, reminded me of bad hazy days in Singapore 3) Creaky floors -- many people have mentioned this, but the hardwood floors creak at the slightest move... woken pretty much most mornings by what sounds like furniture being moved around in another room at 4am If you look at the price for this hotel, which is pretty expensive in retrospect there are other cheaper options (i.e. the Sofitel) which dont have the star ratings but look pretty good. We had dinner at the Sofitel one evening and a stark contrast to the Belmond, very modern feel and a fraction of the cost. Thanks to Sai and the team for looking after us during our stay.
We attended the Belmond Spa in Siem Reap, Cambodia & we were looking forward to another memorable experience here in L.P. Welcomed by Michael, F/B Director we were escorted to The Spa. Massage commenced with a common elixir including medicinal properties, Bael Fruit Tea! Also used in Ayurvedic practice. Indulged in the Sip Sen 70 MN Laos Massage for 2! Given white linen shirts/grey pants for our treatment. Inviting massage room, soothing music & warm hues of orange/green! Professional staff therapists, Piane & Boualy indulged our senses, wellness. Powerful pressure with thumbs/palms. Showers, toiletries, robes & slippers provided. 2 inviting turquoise pools on property! Attentive, obliging staff! Lounge chaises with bamboo hats for guests to use for shading the sun or photo ops! Tropical flora, tall bamboo, lotus, bougainvillea abound on premises including papyrus in ponds of water! Tall palms line the stairs cascading down to The Spa/Gym. Belmond properties excel in excellence, attention to detail & customer service! Delighted to share this experience. Next stop...Belmond in Sicily. Applause/kudos to all staff for a magnificent memorable day. Marah/Norbert Toronto, Canada

In the true Buddhist spirit, the Belmond delivers. Laos is relatively unchanged amidst the seas of globalization. Blouses or pants will run you about $3. 12.5 cents for a 1.5L bottle of water. But somehow the Belmond manages to d3liver a 5 star experience w/o losing the timeliness of the surroundings. It has it all- excellent food and beverage, fitness center and lap pool. And of course lovely service. Perfect location- close to the hustle and bustle, but removed from the congestion.

We had an amazing time at this hotel — Laos and the hotel in particular were definite highlights of our SE Asia honeymoon. The property was perfect — a little enclave just out of downtime for relaxing and feeling that you’re a bit secluded. The staff was amazing. Rooms were luxurious. Shuttle service all day and night made getting into the town for dinner or activities extremely easy (literally a 5 minutes ride to downtown). We would highly recommend this property to anyone for their Luang Prabang stay!
