Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos

In the ancient capital of Laos is a resort of extraordinary brilliance—Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao is shrouded in leafy wonderment high atop the Hill of Kites in Luang Prabang. With views of colliding rivers, soaring mountains, and ancient temples, this luxury resort embraces its Asian history and French influences. The collection of rooms and suites are exquisitely appointed eschewing ornate embellishments and opting for cleaner and more calming motifs. Terrazo baths, rich organic cottons, spacious surroundings and plush textiles are just a few of the unexpected pleasures concealed behind closed doors. Large picture windows frame seemingly airbrushed views of the breathtaking landscape.

Dining at La Résidence is an explosion of exotic flavors that marry Laotian cuisine with traditional European tastes. Illuminated by a fleet of lanterns, Phou Savanh Restaurant's setting is as appetizing as the menu. French and Laotian cuisine complements one another for lunch and dinner. The Five Hundred Candle Dinner is an amazing culinary experience and one to surely ignite romance. A table for two is positioned on the resort's hilltop where 500 flickering candles set the stage for an elegant dinner and live music accompaniment. End the evening on a high note at the Doc Champa Bar, an open-air lounge that also serves a delightful afternoon tea. Home to the nation's first luxury spa, Mekong Spa is superb sanctuary featuring an array of treatments, steam room and a refreshing infinity-edge pool. Take a two-wheel trek and enjoy a scenic bike ride stopping only to enjoy a gourmet, chef-prepared picnic of regional specialties.

We stayed two nights at this breathtaking hotel that was just an incredible oasis. The hotel staff was outstanding from the beginning to the end. We were welcomed with a specialty pomegranate drink and led to our hotel rooms which were absolutely spectacular. The bed and bathroom were sprinkled with beautiful flowers and had an incredible view overlooking a beautiful sanctuary of rainforest and mountain. Everything was perfect - from the private elegant balcony, to the spacious suites and interior design, to the comfortable bed, to the extensive breakfast buffet next to the infinity pool with an awe-inspiring view facing the mountain Phouxi. The breakfast buffet includes different local Luang Prabang options, such as the pork porridge and Pho soup but also includes a wide range of Western specialities. We highly recommend the Van Vieng goat cheese which was a true delight! We also shared a beautiful private dinner at the infinity pool which included Luang Prabang specialities that we will cherish as one of the highlights of our trip. The food was assembled in a beautiful way and was only made even more special by the astonishing atmosphere and view at the infinity pool. The pictures don't do this sanctuary justice. We spent two last days of our trip at Belmond La Residence Phou Vao which was truly a highlight and place to reflect after long excursions. Belmond Phou Vao library also hosted a reception on unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos which was very informative and professional. There are many information materials on issues and volunteer opportunities in Laos provided in the rooms which gave us an opportunity to engage and learn more about issues in Laos. The staff was very attentive, multilingual and personable with attention to detail to make sure we all had an amazing time. Our group was lucky to spend a night swimming in the infinity pool during a full moon - a welcoming perfect end of our vacation. We are thankful for the great staff that made these two days special. Absolutely breathtaking.

Everything about this hotel is perfect! I have travelled extensively in Asia and Europe staying at all caliber of hotels and Phou Vao ranks amongst the best that I've ever had the opportunity to experience. The welcome upon arrival, traditional art work and furnishings, attention to detail in all respects, service, infinity pool and quality of the food served in the restaurant were exquisite. I highly recommend this hotel to travelers wanting the best Luang Prabang has to offer.

I had visited Belmond La Residences in the first week of May .I have visited many super luxurious hotels in the world but I must say it's one of the best. The hotel is beautiful and elegent ,the rooms are spacious have a nice balcony ,espresso machine ,I home for music and wonderful bathrooms with a stone tub. The food is exceptional I have never had better duck in my life. The bar serves wonderful cocktails try the ones with Laos whiskey. The pool is an infinity pool and has an amazing view .The spa is so wonderful I had a very relaxing traditional Laos massage . Last but not the least the staff is superb they really know how to make you feel like a celebrity. They pamper you and go out of the way to take care of you ,always smiling.I used to be late for breakfast as I would party every night but they would be smiling and would wait till I finish it. It's the best hotel in Luang Prabang and I would recommend it to everyone.

The hotel is charming the rooms are very comfortable and the service and location are great But be aware. The cost of the activities and food is over the top. Crazy expensive dinner 170 us for 2 people One of the activities they offer is meditation combine with visiting a sight and that is 475us I mean. Come on. We All know that salaries in Laos are very low. The cost of the food is low. So Why to take advantage of the tourists?? So. My advice is stay at the hotel but Eat out and contract the any activitie with any tour organizer. Located at the little village I

My husband and I stayed at the Belmond Pho Vou towards the end of April. It is a very charming property, and the staff is absolulely superb. We stayed for 3 nights, and we were upgraded to a lovely Junior suite overlooking the mountains and the pool. It was quite nice; spacious, lots of teak, comfortable bed, with a very large bathroom. Our view from our terrace was truly serene, with ample seating and two chaises from which to enjoy it. While the traditional architecture and the layout of the property is charming and special, the hotel definitely is in need of some refurbishments/renovations. It is a bit old, and while I am all for old world charm, there is a difference between old world charm, and being rundown and needing some work. Our shower drain was broken and the visible rusting on the metalwork, while not the end of the world, really is not acceptable for a hotel of this caliber. In addition, if one person was in the shower, and someone was using the sink, the water temperature in the shower would automatically change. We ate several meals on site, and the food and service was excellent for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The 2 highlights of the stay were participating in the Tak Bak Ceremony to feed the monks in town at dawn, and our afternoon on the hotel boat, with Phonevillae, or Villae as he preferred to be called. What an exceptional young man; beyond professional, knowledgeable and just a pleasure to be with. We learned more about Luang Prabang from him, than our actual, accredited tour guide. We were fascinated by the monks, and their lifestyle. Villae told us that he himself had been part of this for several years, and his stories were so incredible. At the end of our afternoon on the boat, he even took us to visit his temple where he studied and we participated together in a Buddha washing ceremony. It was completely unplanned, and so kind of Villae to share this tradition with us. Truly an amazing way to end the day. All in all, we had a very nice experience at the Belmond Pho Vou. But, it is really time for Belmond to put some money into this property and restore it. Especially, with Amantaka, Azerai, and a Rosewood arriving soon. Like I said, the staff was fantastic, and there are still many lovely qualities to the property. But, we think we would want to try one of the others I mentioned next go round, and we would prefer to be in town, as the other properties I mentioned are all located. While the views are beautiful from Pho Vou, it is there are so many wonderful views in Luang Prabang, the whole place is magical. But, we are very appreciative for the lovely stay we had at Belmond, and would love for it to be restored to its glory.
