Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos

In the ancient capital of Laos is a resort of extraordinary brilliance—Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao is shrouded in leafy wonderment high atop the Hill of Kites in Luang Prabang. With views of colliding rivers, soaring mountains, and ancient temples, this luxury resort embraces its Asian history and French influences. The collection of rooms and suites are exquisitely appointed eschewing ornate embellishments and opting for cleaner and more calming motifs. Terrazo baths, rich organic cottons, spacious surroundings and plush textiles are just a few of the unexpected pleasures concealed behind closed doors. Large picture windows frame seemingly airbrushed views of the breathtaking landscape.

Dining at La Résidence is an explosion of exotic flavors that marry Laotian cuisine with traditional European tastes. Illuminated by a fleet of lanterns, Phou Savanh Restaurant's setting is as appetizing as the menu. French and Laotian cuisine complements one another for lunch and dinner. The Five Hundred Candle Dinner is an amazing culinary experience and one to surely ignite romance. A table for two is positioned on the resort's hilltop where 500 flickering candles set the stage for an elegant dinner and live music accompaniment. End the evening on a high note at the Doc Champa Bar, an open-air lounge that also serves a delightful afternoon tea. Home to the nation's first luxury spa, Mekong Spa is superb sanctuary featuring an array of treatments, steam room and a refreshing infinity-edge pool. Take a two-wheel trek and enjoy a scenic bike ride stopping only to enjoy a gourmet, chef-prepared picnic of regional specialties.

We had not intended to stay at this hotel due to budget, but on arrival in LP were informed by the hotel we had booked that their pool was under construction and closed. Having a pool was a requirement for us, especially for our teen boys, so we called the Belmond, got a good 'last minute' rate and switched hotels. Seriously the best move we ever made. Not only is this hotel gorgeous, serene and first class, but the staff was delightful and accommodating, tending to our every need. Definitely worth the few extra bucks to stay at this oasis. Be sure to borrow the free cruisers and bike into LP - a charming town in a gorgeous mountainous, jungle region. Can't wait for out next visit.

The staff at the hotel was the best we've ever experienced. Kind, thoughtful and considerate. Top notch in a beautiful setting. We stayed three nights and head an excellent breakfast each morning on the veranda. The hotel is super small, maybe 20+ rooms and in June (beginning of rainy season) there were maybe 4 rooms full. We used bikes each day to ride to town, for dinner, market night in town or to see the temples. Exceeded expectations.

Having stayed in other hotels in Luang Prabang you really can't beat the setting of this hotel with its lovely views of the nearby hills and a gorgeous pool. The rooms are really large and very comfortable although they are probably verging on the older side these days, but as they were made with such quality at the start and refreshed regularly, they really do feel very comfortable. The service is really top notch and you'll be looked after well. Go for a more relaxed stay and a luxury traditional hotel experience.

I've just returned from a 4 night stay at the Belmond La Residence and would highly recommend staying here for anyone visiting Luang Prabang! Had a positive experience from the get-go; emails are promptly replied to, and making arrangements went smoothly. The airport transfer was very comfortable, with onboard wifi, cold towels (perfect for the hot weather!) and snacks for the 20 minute ride. We were upgraded to the Mountain view and had an amazing view outside the room of the surrounding mountains. The room was massive, with large windows to let in maximum natural light. We also had a verandah to sit outside on and enjoy the view. Breakfast was yummy, but slightly limited due to the low occupancy rate in the low season, so we also had breakfast outside for a couple days. The hotel offers a complimentary sunset cruise down the river for guests and this is definitely not to be missed! The Belmond boat is definitely special; it has a double bed and some daybeds built in, as well as a bar, which makes for a very special cruise down river. The hotel is located about 5 to 7 minutes out of town but we didn't find this an issue as we could use the hotel shuttle, whenever we were done we just gave them a call and we would be picked up within 15 to 20 minutes. Again this flexibility in shuttle service is probably due to the season, but we weren't complaining! The staff of the hotel is really what makes the hotel; everyone was very polite and friendly. Service is impeccable- one thing that stands out is that after a day at the Kuang Si waterfalls, we had left our sandy, muddy shoes outside the room, planning to wash them right before check out. We were pleasantly surprised to find our shoes had been cleaned for us without us even realizing! In summary, this is definitely *the* hotel to stay in while in Luang Prabang, and if you stay over May or early June you'll feel like you're the only people on site!

The hotel has all that you expect from Belmond- great facilities and services. But what really made our stay memorable were the unique experiences they offered. Floating down the Mekong River at sunset on Belmond´s own boat was a magical moment. Being the low season, we had the boat to ourselves, making it even more special. Book in May and you might be one of the luckiest few to be at the resort. Try to upgrade to rooms with the amazing views of the town and don´t miss their cooking class to learn some great Lao recipes with their patient sous-chef. The location high up above town might seem a bit far out, but their free shuttle compensates that. Great hotel!
