In Portugal's Madeira Islands, with sweeping vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, Belmond Reid's Palace is a quintessential European resort. Opened in 1891 and host to many European dignitaries - including Winston Churchill, who penned his war memoirs here after leaving office - this exquisite hotel offers full-service, five-star accommodations. Its superb location in Funchal is off the coast West Africa, and features a coastline of volcanic rock that adds both texture and interest to the seaside setting. Opulent rooms and suites embrace a timeless elegance, with remarkable furnishings, marble bathrooms, and balconies that reach towards the ocean. Personal refreshment centers are stocked with complimentary waters, juices and sodas for the utmost in service and convenience.

We rather feared this might be an example of faded grandeur - a hotel past its best. We need not have worried. Reid's Palace is still outstanding in terms of ambience, guest service, food and the detailed care and attention all members of the hotel team provide. From the moment we arrived every member of staff was friendly and welcoming and remained so throughout our stay. The room was fine with regular servicing, the breakfasts were excellent and the staff on duty for breakfast were outstanding. Dinner at the Villa Cipriani was a real pleasure and the guest relations staff were well informed and helpful. The hotel has real charm and distinction and is not just another high quality but anonymous establishment in which you could be anywhere. The gardens are a treat to walk round and it's not far to walk into Funchal (if it is there are more taxi ranks in Funchal than I have seen in any other town). There are quite a few hotels in Funchal which offer high quality service but none can match Reid's history and the distinction which comes from many years of excellence.

Once again, a fabulous experience, largely down to the outstanding staff that give such a warm welcome. I made an unplanned visit from the cruise I was on, as I have previously done so and had such a lovely time, decided to repeat it. From entering and being shown to the poolside restaurant, I was looked after incredibly well which was comforting as a solo traveller. The pool and the views are outstanding, a wonderful setting to enjoy lunch. I ordered the Salmon sandwich, which came with both smoked and cooked salmon on a bed of lettuce and horseradish sauce. The chips that accompanied it were the best I’ve ever tasted. My piña colada, was both pretty and tasty (and strong!) As it was low season, I did not feel rushed, and in fact if I had not felt a little heady from the drink, would’ve stayed for another. Thank you, Reid’s for making my visit so memorable. I hope to revisit and stay sometime.

Reid's Palace truly feels like an institution and if you can afford it it provides a luxurious but comfortable hotel. The place oozes a calm ambience, with beautiful flower arrangements at every turn. Our room was one of the more modest ones but was still sumptuous. A huge bed, beautiful bed linen and free soft drinks in the minibar. Each evening a small gift is left for you in the room. Breakfast is plentiful and varies=d and can be taken inside or outside the dining room. The grounds are gorgeous, and there are three lovely pools and plenty of sun loungers. Ad hoc drinks, snacks and gifts are brought around to all guests lounging by the pool.

It’s always the best experience. Every year, it never disappoints expectations. The pool, the sea, the accommodation, the common areas, the gardens, the scenery, the staff, the breakfast — everything is “6-star” quality.

An extraordinary value! Reid's Palace Hotel is a handsome historic property featuring breathtaking water views, exotic gardens, a full range of amenities and delicious and varied food options. We found the staff to be very helpful and dedicated to making our 4-day stay with them a holiday in every sense. We appreciated the extra attention the staff paid to getting us in and out of the airport, circumventing the crowds and shortening our travel and wait times. This is Luxury Link at its best.
