This was our "splurge" hotel that could have been amazing. The view and room itself were breathtaking. But the arrogant manager needs some hospitality training. Our shower leaked so bad it flooded into the bedroom. The "plumber" came and couldn't find anything wrong so he just left without a repair. This prompted us to call again and despite reassurances it was fixed, it flooded again the next day. The arrogant manager was hardly apologetic at all. If you have a problem before 7:00am, there is no one there to answer the phone! As we were checking out, we complained to the staff we had NO hot water for the shower that day. The staff wasn't remotely surprised and said they would pass on the message. While we were rolling our eyes at the lack of response, another customer said they had the same problem. I have been at much less expensive hotels where we had a nicer stay. Attitude is everything, Mr manager. I cannot recommend this hotel for these prices.

My husband and I chose to stay at Makanda by the Sea for our 5th year anniversary. The day we checked in it was raining and we arrived earlier than expected. From the moment we went into the gate everyone we were treated like family. As we were checking in they heard that it was our fifth year anniversary and decided to treat us on our stay. We went to the pool to receive our welcome drinks when not soon after the property manager met us at our table to let us know that we had been upgraded to one of the best rooms in the entire hotel. The rooms are incredible, it was by far one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in before. My husband and I were able to relax and enjoy great food and loved seeing all the wild life- monkeys and birds- up close. The details that they put into the hotel is incredible. Our room was beautifully decorated and secluded. We had beautifully hand carved doors that lead us to our hotel room. We felt like we were in our own house on a mountain side. The pool and lounge areas are beautiful and the staff is so nice! We ate amazing, fresh food and enjoyed talking with all the staff who worked there. If we return to Manuel Antonio we will definitely stay here again and will always recommend this to our family and friends who might ever visit. Thanks Makanda for making our stay so wonderful!!

Whilst not at the beach this hotel is great for relaxing and an ocean view from both pools. Easy distance to the National Park and Damos Island . Our villa is beautiful , spacious and with a large ,private balcony from which we saw a stunning range of birds and two mating iguanas . Excellent staff , especially ‘Coco’ whose self taught English is superb . He was very helpful and polite . A credit to the hotel . Don’t hesitate to walk up the hill to find great restaurants and well stocked supermarket . The only criticism of Makanda is it’s very pricey wine list

A great place to stay, with the best high end restaurant in Manuel Antonio. Superb food, service, views, decor and I especially enjoyed the wine list. Luxury surrounded by rain forest and wildlife. I can highly recommend this place.

This was our last stop on our honeymoon so we wanted luxury - we were not disappointed! We were welcomed to the hotel in the cool comforts of the managers office. We were given an upgrade which was a treat but later learnt the hotel was quiet, but never the less it was very kind of them. Once the paper work was done we were shown down to the pool area for a welcome drink. The hotel is built on the side of a hill which is steep so be prepared to put your thighs to work here!! The main pool is amazing, it gives you the real wow factor. The craftsmanship of this hotel is impressive. The materials used are creative, from the individual pebbles in the walls to the hand basin in the loos which is drift wood from the beach. The rooms are very techy with some great gadgets, but who wants to spend time in the room when there is Costa Rica to explore. On the subjects of rooms, the toilet is unreal, seriously it was bigger than our living room!! Great mirrors with the time and a handy make up mirror built in - again very techy! There is a mini bar, safe, hairdryer and coffee making facilities in the room. We had a balcony which looked out over the second pool and the sea. The second pool was very quiet, but then the whole hotel was at the time. We had dinner once at the hotel, unfortunately because the hotel was quiet there was only us, which is lovely but we wanted atmosphere so we headed off up, and I mean up the road to the local town for the rest of our stay. We walked back and forth to the town as the roads are quiet, best take a torch just in case and watch out for crabs in the road!! Taxis are available if your legs aren't up to it! Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and freshly made dishes to order, most people are up early so there is a good vibe. There is a beach which we visited at the end of a very very steep hill. It wasn't great if I'm honest so we only stayed for an hour. There is a golf buggy that can take you down but we didn't know how to call it to bring us back up and we weren't told either - we walked back up as had no choice, this was hard going and we are fit and in our 30's! Let me tell you about the NATURE!! We spent two weeks moving around Costa Rica trying to soak up the country which we did and loved, BUT we were feeling a bit let down by the nature and it's shyness of some species, que Hotel Makanda by the sea!! We saw 3 sloths within 10 minutes of walking on to the property! The first afternoon we were visited by monkies by the pool who playfully ran a riot stealing (actually I gave it to them) fruit from our cocktails. First morning we saw red tail macaws and a toucan, albeit a flash! The sloths moved slowly around the complex from tree to tree. 2nd morning bought tears of joy. A baby sloth had come down from a tree during a storm the night before and was just hanging out on one of the sun beds. How amazing and I hear the baby is still around and is happy and healthy. You won't be disappointed with this hotel, they can't do enough for you. The bar staff are kind, helpful and didn't get annoyed with all the questions about the animals from me!
