We stayed at Makanda for a week in early May and it was incredible! The best compliment we can give is: We can't wait to go back! We say this because it is so beautifully designed, the staff are wonderfully friendly (nothing is too much trouble) and the natural setting is stunning. Each studio/villa is set apart in a beautiful rain forest and we had monkeys, toucans and sloths outside every day. There are 2 beautiful pool side restaurants with delicious food: especially the freshly made suchi at the swim up pool! Go and stay, you'll have a really unforgettable holiday and fabulous memories to treasure back at home.

Very quite relaxing hotel, everything was just perfect, excellent design, big rooms (especially bathrooms), ocean view, 2 pools, private beach, very client-oriented polite staff, clean. So almost everything that is needed in one place. Good bar and restaurant with great food and good service.

This is a review of my whole Costa Rican experience. Mostly on this hotel, as thats why your reading this. My wife and I flew in to San Jose from NH USA. A long flight with layover. Airport customs was a 2 hour wait. Then problems with budget rental car. That will be a separate review and not a pleasant one. Finally we are on the road, and in rush hour San Jose traffic, in the rain, in a foreign country. We started the trek to Manuel Antonio for our 10 years later honeymoon. After a beautiful but slow (due to heavy trucking route) drive to Makanda. Three hours later we made it. 8pm (10 our time) we pulled into a small town, nestled on a hill in the jungle. Manuel Antonio. We were wowed by the small curvy road leading down the other side of hill to Makanda. As we pulled in past the gate, we knew instantly this was paradise. The lush green jungle around us. The beautiful lighting. At first glance I knew this hotel was built around the jungle, not some high rise hotel thrown up after chopping the forest beauty apart. Instantly a golf cart pulled up. Jorge got out and showed us right where reception was and where to park. We checked in and the room I picked out was available still, but if we chose, an upgraded room was offered to us at the same cost. We chose the upgraded room. A really nice gesture on Makanda's end. My wife and I were exhausted, and felt completely taken care of. The staff was so great. Jorge brought down all our luggage to the room, and my wife and I decided on a drink at the pool. Wow. We never imagined the beauty. The website does this hotel no justice. Nor do any of the pictures you will find The design and lighting, so beautiful. We were tired and did not stay long. Upon return to the room a fruit platter and bottle of champaign were waiting for us on our room desk. Such a great welcome and surprise. The next morning we woke at the crack of dawn at 5 am with excitement. We did find the lack of coffee in the room to be dissapointing. The bar/ lounge opens at 6:45 for continental breakfast and has coffee or 7:15 for the full complimentary breakfast. We ate at Makanda the second day but decided to get coffee and breakfast at Cafe Milagro, in town today. Which also opens at 7am. Had a great breakfast there and would be returning almost daily the remainder of our trip. I recommend the omelet. Thats another review. We returned to the hotel and contacted the office for a ride down the hill to the private beach. Makanda sits in the jungle on a hill and you can take a golf cart ride down most of the hill, and a 5 min walk from there to a private beach. We were greeted by Jorge promptly with the cart and towels. Jorge also had set up chairs for us at the beach. We had this beach to ourselves for hours. Just the two of us! And it is beyond words how beautiful it is. A little rocky for swimming and need to watch out for sharp rocks. We were careful and had a great swim. Jorge returned to pick us up at a scheduled time and we had great conversations with him and learned a lot of his culture. The remainder of the weeks stay called for afternoon storms daily. We didn't experience a single one and the weather was perfect. Hot and humid, but we loved it. Spent the rest of the day before dinner poolside. Had a great lunch at Makanda and the pools were empty. They have two pools now as they are expanding. Yes there is some construction going on as the hotel expands. We did not mind it one bit. Life goes on and they didn't use power tools ect. Were not noisy and neither my wife or myself were bothered. Housekeeping took care of the room daily and did a great job. The biggest thing with Makanda I felt, were both the fact we felt the hotel catered to us. Like we were the only ones there. We felt like we were home. The other is how Makanda does not intrude on nature. It is built around it. Respects nature. They don't want you feeding the animals. The animals are wild and should stay this way. And you will see the anaimals. They will help you find sloths as they don't move much and are hard to spot. I can see why the animals would rather be here than all in the over populated park. The rest of our days were much of the same. Photos of wildlife and beach by ourselves until about 11/12. My wife found two conch shells at the beach and was so happy. We did visit Playa biesanz beach the third day. A small beach, though public, not far from Makanda. We did swim the 1/3 mile out to the reef with a boogie board. Do not recommend this unless your a very strong swimmer. We saw tons of beautiful fish out there, and swam back. Took two hours of swimming. My wife got a massage on the side of the beach for an hour by a professional masseuse. It was perfect. Paradise. We had great meals at Makanda breakfast and lunch, and Barba Roja lunch, La Luna dinner, Cafe Milagro breakfast and dinner, Falafel bar and smoothies (so good, but cash only). Only bad service and drinks were Emilios Cafe. Poor coffee and they were rude to us, but thats another review. We quickly fell into the Pura Vida feeling. Its a Costa Rican saying, pure simple life. Be good. My wife and I are in good shape but have had diet issues and overall poor feeling of health the last few years. We experienced no problems the whole week, and in fact felt so good with all the amazing rice and beans (Casado and Gallo Pinto) and amazing fresh fruit. The freshest most sweet and amazing fruit. Felt better than in the last 25 years. They make fresh fruit smoothies at makanda daily and they are so good! We had stopped on the way in at a Soda on the side of the road. Cheap food and great rice and beans and chicken. The Soda stops are all along the roads your whole drive to Manuel Antonio, and it seems you can't go wrong. The people and drivers outside of San Jose are nice and courteous. They beep to say thank you or go ahead. From close to Boston area, we are not used to that. They put flashers on to warn others of a road obstruction. Like dogs. Lots of dogs and people around in town. Lot of people walking. Everyone rides bikes. The rest of our stay was the same. We hardly felt a need to leave Makanda. They had everything we needed and the fresh water pools were relaxing. Nice shaded places to lay while in the sun. Hanging couples swings ect. We found both pools nearly empty and had the hotel to ourselves. Or so it felt. We enjoyed the beach daily and our talks with Jorge. Its funny. I went to Costa Rica so excited to take photos of the wildlife (don't bother with the natural park and tourist trap, stay at the hotel and see all the sloths, monkeys, howlers and toucans) and see the beauty of the country. And what I found I am taking away is so much more. A friendship with a great person who showed us his culture and the meaning of pure vida. He brought us in to Quepos and showed us a great Soda and a special pineapple rice drink he has. Jorge and I have kept in touch after our leave and I can not wait to return and visit my friend again and his beautiful country. I truly recommend hotel Makanda by the sea to anyone looking for a beautiful experience, a romantic stay and a connection with nature and to feel at home in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!!! NOTE: the first round of pictures are just off my iPhone and soon will edit and post some of my camera wildlife pictures.

First of all, we saw most of the wild animals we wanted to see all while sitting by the pool! How awesome is that???? Sloths, monkeys, macaws. I wish we had more than 3 nights to spend there I can't image what else we would have seen. This place is BEAUTIFUL! It rained quite a bit when we were there (start of the rainy season is no joke), but even when it was down-pouring the view was unreal. The pool and common areas are so clean and you can tell they take very good care of the entire property. The people - I work for a company that provides employee engagement tools and consulting, so when I go somewhere I pay special attention to this. The people that work for Hotel Makanda were truly incredible, and you can just tell they love that place and want to make you happy and comfortable. It was their attitude over anything, you can't fake that. I am terrible at names or I would list out the incredible people who made our stay awesome, but everyone who worked the front desk first of all. It makes me feel absolutely terrible that I cannot remember names, but CJ I think, he works at the bar/restaurant by the pool, he was awesome. The sweetest guy and took serious time to think about some recommendations for us. He told us about places that he loves around the area which is something that is truly special! The room - We were upgraded to the one bedroom villa and it was beautiful. Only downside was that they are updating a lot of the rooms and ours wasn't updated yet. It was awesome, but not what I was expecting from the pictures (mostly the bathroom). But honestly, it was still the best room on the property other than the way more expensive rooms with their own pool. This might sound like a negative to some, but was probably one of the coolest experiences of our ENTIRE 8 days in Costa Rica, was being woken up by the howler monkeys in the early hours of the morning. My boyfriend and I would be woken up around 2am (we are both VERY light sleepers though) and go out to the balcony and just listen to the sounds of the rainforest. It is hard to describe how beautiful and peaceful that experience was. I think this was one of the benefits of the villa as opposed to the studio rooms, but I am not 100% sure. Overall, I would stay here again in an instant. NO doubt. Thank you, Makanda!
