Reviews for Hotel Makanda by the Sea
There is a lot to like about this hotel but there’s definitely some slight issues that don’t go unnoticed. The pros of the hotel are the pools, both are beautiful and there’s so much wildlife to be seen. The restaurant is also lovely and the food is very nice. The cons, whilst only small started to add up; strange bathroom layout and water got everywhere, room looked dated and could do with freshening up, no water provided in room - first hotel I’ve ever stayed in that doesn’t provide free water, lack of seating around main pool and due to location is difficult to sunbath. I stayed for 3 nights which was just enough. It is still the best place to stay in MA but that’s probably more to do with lack of quality alternatives. Whilst it looks beautiful the experience sadly doesn’t match the first impression.

If you're planning on visiting Manual Antonio, you absolutely must consider this hotel. The rooms are spacious and beautiful with views of the ocean. The pools are crystal clear with lots of lounging area. The private beach is quaint and quiet. The staff is incredibly friendly, and all speak English and Spanish extremely well. The restaurant and bar both have delicious food and cocktails. This place is really something special, as even the locals will sometimes travel here for dinner/drinks. The only "minor" issue is that hot water runs out quickly mid-day, so just plan to either shower early or late. If you're looking for a place to stay in Manual Antonio, look no further. This is the place to be! PS: Ask for Emerson at the Pool bar, he's the best bartender in town!

The resort's architecture is stunning, especially the main pool/bar/restaurant area. And they have done a very nice job of setting the accommodations naturally into the environs. We saw lots of monkeys and birds without even leaving the grounds. Our Ocean Club suite was amazing, with a lovely balcony and view of the surrounding forest and ocean. It was right under the second pool area, but still very private and quiet. The small beach area is lovely and secluded, but the last bit of the path, which has to be negotiated by foot, is a bit tricky. Also there are only a few chairs belonging to Makanda (beach seems to be shared with at least one other hotel) Breakfasts were great, and we had other good meals at the restaurant too. Most staff were very friendly. A few quibbles, however: - no bathrobes were provided, which seemed odd for such an upscale place - one-ply toilet tissue was of very poor quality; one can be eco-friendly without being that cheap - there was only one waste basket in the entire suite - the one beside the toilet for used tissue - it wasn't possible to make any phone calls, even local, from the room - happy hour was only available at one of the pool bars, for some reason - laundry services was extremely expensive - the checkout procedure was extremely laborious, and after my husband discovered someone else's restaurant charges added to our bill and began scrutinizing things more carefully, one of the staffers at Reception (the more senior one), rather than apologizing for the error, became quite snippy

I've been visiting the Manuel Antonio area for 25 years. This is my first year to stay at this hotel, although we were able to visit the pools and restaurant several times last year during our New Year's holiday. We booked an Ocean Club Suite, which was a new room, and my parents had a Villa with a private pool. The beds are soooo comfy and the huge rooms are nice cooled to your desired temp. The design of every aspect of this hotel from the smallest details, is absolutely unbelievable (and extremely Instagramable!). The pool has relaxing chill music playing and every view we had at both rooms and both pools were stunning. There is plenty of shade for those of us who are a bit pale, and great spots in the sun for those of us who enjoy a good tan. We saw 3 species of monkeys, a sloth, countless birds, and reptiles. The service is second to none, Luis and Emerson are THE best bartenders and will keep your glasses full while you're hanging out at the pool. I highly recommend the watermelon juice! Everything is made fresh. The restaurant, Arbol, is also new this year. You cannot believe the design and decor, it WILL be featured in a design magazine this year, I predict! My husband and I had a couples massage at the spa, and those ladies were incredible and strong! If you are looking for a traditional hotel, this is not for you. If you appreciate details, design, and modern, high tech amenities, you need to stay here. We appreciate that it is adult only to ensure a relaxing experience.
It was one of a lifetime experience. My girlfriend was so amazed by the design of the room and private pool, we could spend time with each other in tranquility and at the same time restaurant stuff and reception were ready to help or do the room service whenever we called them from the room. Thank you Leo for recommending one of the best rooms!!! And thank you Mikel for checking us in and providing all the information.
