Reviews for Hotel Makanda by the Sea
Makanda is a gem. Stunning in every detail. The grounds are simply magical. We loved watching the sunset from the pool eating yummy appetizers and sipping on superb cocktails. It is like walking into another world. We highly recommend a visit!

We had a very nice stay here, the property is beautiful! Staff were always happy and helpful (thank you Coco!). The salt water infinity pool was especially nice and never crowded. I would have given and excellent review, however our older bodies were challenged with the steps going down to our room. I think a handrail would be very welcome. My fear was falling at night when it got dark.

We just love, love it here. We stayed in two different rooms, both of which had unreal views. We are from Key West, so we know what paradise feels like.... this was on a different level. The rooms were clean, sleek and beautiful. Food has been fabulous. Especially the breakfast!!! Staff has been great, too.

We arrived at the resort late and were not impressed with the check in process. Our private driver was not allowed in so we had to walk to the office while our bags were left at the main gate. We were not given a tour or a map of the property. After check in we were immediately taken to our room. . It took almost an hour to get our luggage and we sat in this room with no idea where anything was. Eventually my husband walked up a crazy hill (The incline is no joke) to bring the luggage down himself. The front desk offered a golf cart to help with the hill yet half of the time we called they did not answer the phone. There is also no staff or golf carts available from 11-7. The food at the restaurant was very good although I wish there would have been snack options as this resort does not have a gift shop. The pools were very nice and warm. One of the pools closes as 6pm which was a bummer. The main thing missing from this hotel is hospitality. I have been to Costa Rica several times and this was abundant at the other hotel and not this one. Also this resort does not have handrails and the lighting is poor. Both my mother and I fell during our stay. Be cautious if you have any limitations. The golf cart was not always available and when we called several times the phone was not answered.

This hotel nestles very near Manuel Antonio national park. It has rooms built into the hillside over looking the sea. All rooms I am told have an ocean view. On arrival, we had to wait by the security barrier as our taxi appeared not to be allowed to pass. We had to wait for a golf buggy to transport us to reception. We were greeted by a friendly guy called Michael. Michael seemed to be trying to help other customers on the phone and in person whilst giving us pertinent information on the hotel, N.b. No useful information in the room. We arrived after check in time, however the room wasn’t ready as Michael explained, because of staff sickness. We were tired and rather fractious when we were eventually informed our room was ready. We were taken to our room by a young guy who really didn’t seem very interested. The room was clean, complete with ocean view, a view of the lower half of the pool and DIY equipment. All the pretentious gadgets going are here including the fingertip recognition safe which doesn’t recognise your fingertip! It took three attempts to get bathrobes, oh and a boring old key to lock the super dooper safe! This hotel has the look of wow. But it is people that matter. Front of desk are the first point of contact for guests. Michael did his best and he recommended a great restaurant. Raphael on the terrace.
