Hotel Makanda by the Sea in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
Adjacent to Manuel Antonio National Park, within a 12-acre sanctuary poised 200 meters above the Pacific Ocean, the adult-only Hotel Makanda by the Sea captures the magical spirit of Costa Rica. Open-air and well-appointed villas and studios are sculpted harmoniously into the natural environment, and boast spectacular views of the 60-mile coastline. In this unspoiled wonderland, you can savor fresh seafood, drift in the stunning infinity pool, or watch local wildlife including monkeys and sloths as they wind their way through the rainforest.
Although the resort boasts spacious viewing decks reaching into the jungle canopy, you will want to venture further out, to raft the Savegre River or take a horseback ride along a rainforest trail. Secluded nearby beaches provide sublime settings for surfing, sunning and sea kayaking. You might also snorkel or scuba dive off the volcanic reefs of local islands. For pure indulgence, request a soothing spa treatment. Then unwind over homemade dessert and a cup of coffee freshly roasted at the hotel's own Sunspot Bar & Grill.

Reviews for Hotel Makanda by the Sea
We really loved staying here. It’s a beautiful place with amazing scenery. The whole staff is so nice and very helpful. We made some friends with the staff while there... coco, jorge, champo, thank you guys so much for everything! You all were amazing and we will definitely be coming back soon :) pura vida!!
We loved Makanda by the Sea, eating breakfast with the squirrel monkeys and capuchin monkeys. The facilities are luxurious, with amazing cabins nestled in the Costa Rican rainforest near Manuel Antonio Park. Pools are wonderful. (How do the owners ever recover their investment for all of the top-of-the-line appurtenances? The sushi bar in the salt-water infinity pool has seating in the water.) Staff is friendly, helpful, and cheerful. Food prices are a little high but not awful. A word of caution: the small reception area cannot change your dollars to colones or even break your larger colones, and the closest bank machine is a 10- to 15-minute walk up a steep roadway which is very dark at night. Which leads up to our one main complaint: The hotel is a bit too remote not to offer transportation up the steep hill to the nearby shops and restaurants and down the very steep drop to the main beaches. (Makanda's own beach is small and mostly large rocks, accessible via a cart trail and steps.) The road up and down is steep and difficult for older guests to navigate the incline back to the hotel. The hotel is a significant distance from San Jose Airport There is a small airfield nearby to which you can fly via Sansa Airlines from and to San Jose, if--unlike our experience--the airfield has not been closed. Otherwise, plan for a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from San Jose to Makanda via bus, shuttle, or private driver. All that said, the facility is 9 stars out of 10, and if you're not prone to cabin fever and in good physical shape for walking steep hills, a 10 out of 10.

What a beautiful hotel! Stylish, chic, great location and breathtaking views. This is our second visit to Costa Rica, we prefer to stay in the south. A couple years ago we had visited and stayed in a great place too. Makanda has two different pools with bars and restaurants. A jacuzzi hot tub where you can drink your cocktails. The rooms are beautiful, with couches and sofas plus balconies to sit outside and admire the view. Comfortable beds and cozy sheets. Food at the restaurant was yummy and the service was great! We will recommend.

Great Location, relaxing atmosphere, fabulous accommodations, gorgeous surroundings. Lot's of privacy. Loved watching the sunset from the salt water pool bar. Pacific Jacuzzi suite was one of it's kind!!! Highly recommended.

This review is very late in being submitted. We had the immense pleasure of staying at Makanda the end of August. From the minute we set foot on the property, we were amazed. They did an incredible job of incorporating this lovely, boutique hotel into the jungle. Everyone we encountered from the front desk to the cleaning ladies were so friendly and helpful. Our room and view were beyond words. Honestly, the minute the gentleman that showed us what we needed to see in our room left, I bawled. I was so overwhelmed with the beauty of what i was seeing. It felt like a dream. We spent quite a bit of time in the infinity pool by our room, so we had a lot of interaction with the guys that worked at the lower pool. Roberth, Jorge, Jose, Alberto ( I know I'm leaving people out, I'm sorry) were so much fun to spend the day with. We went on a couple tours in the morning and then would come back and spend the rest of the day in the pool. Drinking and eating sushi and ceviche! They recommended places to see and eat beyond the typical tourist spots. My guy and I were so grateful for the wonderful hospitality we received here. We definitely will return here in the future!
