Reviews for Hotel Makanda by the Sea
My husband and I researched for days on where to go in Costa Rica for our honeymoon. Eventually, during an in-depth Google Maps search, we came upon Hotel Makanda and thought it would be the perfect place to stay during our week in Manuel Antonio in March 2018. From start to finish, our visit was top-notch, with the staff still feeling approachable. We LOVED the staff and feel that they are our lifelong friends. We arrived before check-in, and Luis greeted us at the main pool / restaurant where we were given a lovely bottle of bubbly rose and then ordered some delicious ceviche served in a hollowed out coconut. Once we arrived to our room with the wonderful Jorge, it felt exactly like the photos, but better. The view was incredible, and we were so excited to be able to spend seven nights here. We tried the restaurant on the first night. Sadly, I wasn't super impressed with my pork belly, as it was a bit on the dry side, but the tuna tar tar was out of this world -- we ordered it two more times after the first night. Each night, we took part in the happy hour at the pool, which is a great 2-for-1 deal. We would spend some of our mornings by the salt water pool, which has a glorious view of the ocean, lined with jungle foliage. The sushi bar there is fantastic. We loved chatting there with Chris (who also served us breakfast most of the mornings we were there). His English was very good, and he helped my husband, who is on a mission to learn Spanish, learn more Spanish words throughout the week. He was very patient with us, and we feel like we got to know him well. The breakfasts were wonderful! We woke up pretty early every morning and really enjoyed our short walk down to the pool where we got to look forward to a plate full of fresh fruit, a new juice concoction created with love by TJ, and a large and delicious breakfast. I feel like I could go on about specific details, but I'll just leave it at this: we 100% recommend this hotel and would go back any time. Our memories from our honeymoon are nothing but positive, and it's due in large part to our time at Makanda.
Hotel Makanda in Manuel Antonio is second to none … Let me start by saying the staff was incredible and extremely hospitable. Both receptionists we dealt with were kind, respectful and full of information. The rooms were immaculate and the staff went over every detail about the room with a fine tooth comb. The room had features like electric curtains to take in the spectacular view, a mini fridge fully stocked with all the essentials, air conditioning, a gorgeous bathroom made for a king and queen, two sinks, a giant cloud-like bed and the best part a giant walk out balcony to soak in everything Manuel Antonio has to offer in a nice secluded sanctuary for you, your family or just a romantic getaway for you and your loved one. There is a delicious freshly prepared breakfast included in your stay along with a gourmet restaurant on premise as well. If you get a little hot go for a refreshing swim in the salt water pool or for later in the evening the regular pool. There is a bar attached to the pools so that you can swim up to and order refreshing cocktails or a quick bite to eat with smiling and happy staff members to take all your requests. 24/7 security makes you feel safe at all times and there is a shuttle service to take you to and from all the fascinating amenities this hotel has to offer … definitely 5 star for pictures of everything Hotel Makanda has to offer check us out @truththroughtravel on instagram
Spent a day at Makanda at the pool and it was absolutely incredible. The architecture is something worth marveling over, words and pictures cannot do enough justice. The whole layout of the pool area, with the view of the ocean are absolutely divine. Spent and entire day at the pool with a group of friends and the staff treated us wonderfully. Cannot say enough good things about this place, can't wait to be back.
just wanted to write a review of the makanda as i think it deserves the 5 stars we have given it we arrived around 10 pm after a delayed flight, and as a small hotel there wasnt a lot of activity, but the man on security welcomed us and a man from reception met us and welcomed us i cannot give any names as no name tags on the staff shirts we were swiftly taken to reception and proceeded the check in..which took no more than a few minutes we were then taken down a lot of steps to our room we had villa7 which was a jacuzzi villa, although we booked ocean club room we had a lovely free upgrade the room is spacious with a big bathroom, a small kitchen area, a sauna ( yes,a sauna, which i still dont understand),a large balcony ,and a jacuzzi on the balcony..the views were direct towards jungle with sea in the background.. no villas in front , in fact the hotel is so spread out you never see another villa unless you go looking every morning and every evening the monkeys would pop to villa ,which was nice we were basically 15 steps to the main pool, which was amazing we were worried being near pool and bar because of noise but after 9 ish nothing really happens so it was quiet the ocean club pool ( which we could use as part of having the villa) was about 50 yards away ...stunning infinity pool surrounded by ocean club rooms and jungle there was a sloth near the pool for a couple of days which was amazing to watch the resort felt quiet most of the time which is nice, and with 2 pools to choose from then you could always find beds 2 for 1 cocktails were only at the main pool between 4-6, ...with a choice of around 7, at acost of 10.5 us dollars plus tax ...thats for 2 breakfast was at the main pool, and was fantastic, firstly served with tea coffee and juice of the day, then a plate full of fresh fruit then you order of menu and they make it fresh, eg..omlette, eggs benidict, french toast...all flexible to how and what you want there is one evening restaurant which we went to once during our stay...i had steak and scallops with was amazing, and my wife had the duck we ate lunch 2 or 3 times around the pool and that was great with big portions outside the hotel up a steep hill , for about 10 minutes, is where you find restaurants... emilios at too of hill was fantastic...nothing to look at from the the outside, but when inside the views are great, always full with great food,,,we also tried victorias, el elgarto, gabriells steakhouse, el avion.all good quality food, with prices similar or a little less than the uk the hotel beach...golf buggy took you down the hill to a point where he dropped you off as he couldnt go no further..then its a ten minute trek through the jungle ...coming back is less fun!be aware that the sea is stoney once youre in 10 yards of so. the resort is built on a steep hill with lots of steps and slopes so definately no good if you have walking difficulties... we looked at makanda on tripadvisor for a long time before booking, and definately made the right choice the owners have spend a lot of time and money creating this hotel, which is why it gets such great reviews the only negatives...and in no way did it affect the stay but it helps to point it out our shower floor was made of stone pebbles, which you couldnt really stand on with bare feet there is no info in rooms about hotel , happy hour etc , just a room service menu but as i said that doesnt matter considering the positives

This is an amazing place (if you can afford it). The meals are excellent. Breakfast is free and is a feast if you order after 7:00 a.m. The accommations are lovely. The pools are amazing inifinity pools, just the right temperature. There are swinging daybeds over the pool, and many comfortable chaise lounges. we got to see lots of squirrel and white face monkeys, especially while you are eating breakfast. Watch your fruit! The lush vegetation is beautiful, and you have a view of the Pacific Ocean. All the staff are friendly and very accommedating. You can get golf cart rides to the restaurants and down to the ocean. There is a hike to get to the ocean. Be sure to wear tennis shoes. It is a lovely place to stay.
