Reviews for Hotel Makanda by the Sea

Fantastic experience, definitely coming back again

From the very start of our stay all the staff were extremely friendly and professional. The villa was very clean and had everything we could want. We loved having the crocs provided to walk around the hotel. The bed was extremely comfortable as well. The food was very tasty, but portions were far too big for us.

Sloths, Sunsets, and the Best Pina Coladas Ever

We just returned from Makanda by the Sea and I'm already planning about going back. This place exceeded every expectation we had - in a good way! Our room was stunning. Modern, impeccably designed, and had a huge bathroom. The view from our room was breathtaking, and we loved the thoughtful touch of providing Crocs for guests. Such a practical ameninty at the hotel. The property itself is essentially in the middle of the jungle, and the wildlife viewing was beyond incredible. During our stay, we spotted toucans, both two toed and three toed sloths, several species of monkeys, and countless iguanas. The grounds are gorgeously maintained while preserving that lush rainforest feel, and the views are absolutely spectacular. The two pool areas were a favorite. I loved that they have both a saltwater and chlorine pool option, plus two hot tubs, which meant we never felt crowded. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the surroundings. The food at Arbol was exceptional. Do yourself a favor and book the tasting dinner menu. You won't regret it. The pork belly is an absolute must order! We also booked a couples massage, which was therapeutic and relaxing. A bit on the expensive end, but still very worth it after days of hiking prior. While all service was top notch, the true cherry-on-top of already amazing experience, was Elias. His genuine warmth and care made us feel so welcome, and every single recommendation he gave us was spot on. Also he makes the best Pina colada I have had in my life. The beach at the property is relatively small and rocky, but this wasn't an issue at all since there are much better beach options nearby that are easy to access. Highly recommend staying here!

Peaceful Escape with Great Views

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 22 hours ago

We spent the last week of November at Makanda by the Sea. The property is extremely quiet and subdued. The pool area was a highlight. Beautiful views, wildlife in the surrounding trees, and plenty of seating. Staff throughout the property were attentive and genuinely friendly. We stayed in the WOW villa. It was spacious, nicely appointed, and the housekeeping team kept everything immaculate. The amenities were excellent—we especially appreciated the golf cart rides down to the beach. A note on dining: we ventured off property a few times for dinner and Makanda was consistently better than what we found in the area. This isn't a place for nightlife or constant activity. If you want a quiet place, good service, and a beautiful setting, Makanda delivers.

Best message ever

Room was very nice but we stayed in the Penthouse sweat. Not sure about other rooms. There was lots of animals like monkeys and sloths. We seen three different kinds of monkeys everyday that we were there. The grounds can definitely use some work, very steep, and the golf carts slide alot. There is a beach but I don't recommend swimming there is a strong rip current there and no one warned use. I did go parasailing just don't the road from there and had the time of my life. Just ask at the hotel they will set it all up for you transfers there and back included. We got a massage there and also was very good.

very nice property with great staff, Joel at the pool bar was especially nice... it was easy access with day pass.

Decided on a hunch to take a day pass for this amazing property with private beach including golf cart ride from the main pool to the beach and back. Drinks and food were good, we would do it again.

My husband and I stayed here and it was absolutely amazing. Often the pictures on the website are an exaggeration of what you get, but that was definitely not the case here. In fact, the pictures really do not do it justice. Breakfast was served in the room a la carte each day and we could sit out on the balcony and just enjoy the privacy and clean air. It was wonderful! The staff was very helpful, and the resort felt very private, with few people staying there. We felt like royalty the entire time.

My wife and I stayed at Makanda and frankly, we fell in love with the place. Its very laid back and beautiful. The suites are huge and lovely. At the end of every day, we'd float around in the swimming pool with a drink in one hand, watching the sun set, with a troop of Howler monkeys in the trees over our heads. Talk about romantic! The area had enough to keep us busy (we did a guided tour of Manuel Antonio Park, a zip line tour and a mangrove boat tour) and there are several top restaurants nearby, including the one at the hotel, which is outside, near the pool. I recommend Makanda by the Sea very highly.
