My fiancé recently proposed and I thought I could ¨help him" choose a wedding and/or honeymoon destination 😉 Manuel Antonio Beach, Costa Rica seems to be one of the top romantic destinations and now we know why... Makanda by the Beach - beautifully designed hotel, luxury villas (of course I chose the one with a private pool), 2 huge pools available (1 at the restaurant, 1 next to the bar). Crazy ocean views all over the place, LOTS of wildlife! Reservations Manager was so kind to give us a tour of the whole place so I can see different room types. He even set up a quick meeting with the Chef and we already have a base menu confirmed. New Restaurant will be top notch and I can't wait to host our wedding party there! I will definitely recommend this hotel to my family and guests. Thank you for the amazing service! See you in a couple of months...

Makanda by The Sea, is one of the most beautifull place to stay at Manuel Antonio... The vibe, the staff and the amazing pool made a great mixed! Villa #6 is my favorite, the private pool, the shower, and view.... A million dollars view!!!. The whole place is full of luxury details and good taste.... And of course you have to go and visit the Makanda Spa....

I am writing this review as I remember amazing sunset from the Makanda pool. We spent our honeymoon there. We stayed in 6th villa with private pool. Can confirm it has unique design and I noticed that every details and everything in villa so makes area really comfy and relax. Beautiful location and a lot of animals around, a lot of monkeys like they have there own Makanda mafia ahaha So really feels jungle mood:))) I have to say about restaurant. It's really delicious, unusual menu, we are thinking that chef is from Europe it seems to be high level of kitchen. Now my favorite is banana cake hhah you should try! Last day we had a massage at the SPA and it was one of the best moments of our honeymoon. The stuff make for us really romantic day and had relaxed us sooo much!! highly recommend this part of Makanda. We are traveling all over the world it has become so rare to find such a beauty and special location. We fetl in love with Makanda and will come again without a doubt!!

If you are looking for a stylish place to relax - this is Makanda! We stayed in Ocean Club #7 room and we are just in love. The room is huge, super comfortable, with huge marble bathroom, Audio-system and a large TV, laptop safe reading the fingerprint - everything is new and modern. And the ocean view is fabulous! Breakfast at the hotel is served on the menu and has a large number of options to choose from. Excellent menu for dinner with reasonable prices and great food. Special thanks to the hotel staff - friendly, positive lovely people! It's a great job to run a place like that! Thank you very much for our wonderful holiday!

This is a really difficult review to write because the Makanda is SO hit and miss in many areas.... It does undoubtedly have potential to be a first-class resort but my experience suggests that it isn't there yet. Room - I would say here that the villas are very much more style over substance - the lighting/gadgets/technology in the villa that we stayed in was "troubled".....the light switches seemed to change which lights they turned on and off....we couldn't even find some of the switches. There were a million lights but none were very useful. Only one side of the bed had a table (in both villas) and the table that was there was massive but with no real space to put anything. The curtains didn't quite close so take an eye mask!!! The kitchen is pointless - I really can't imagine that they ever get used and they take up vast amounts of space. There are no drawers for clothes....not the first time we found this in Costa Rica but it's SO annoying when you're travelling for a couple of weeks and have to live out of a suitcase. The villa pools are very cold, so beware - the main pool is much nicer to swim in because of the temperature....but they're lovely to lie around and watch the sun set. Food - the current restaurant by the pool was fine for breakfast and lunch. Dinner was pretty much an extension of the lunch menu so we went out on most evenings that we were there. The food isn't wow - the veggie choices are really poor. Breakfast was nice and the monkeys that hang out are good entertainment. Staff - again, very hit and miss. Some were really lovely and helpful and the reception team were fab and welcoming - others were very grumpy and we sometimes felt like we were intruding rather than paying guests. Pool service was ok if you went and ordered but there wasn't anybody coming round taking orders which is pretty standard in luxury hotels. Pool - great pool area but be careful on the flags around the edge which are super slippy. Very special, not crowded and really relaxing - some special visits from the wildlife and spectacular sunsets. The construction work didn't really bother us although they were there for the whole time that we were there...I imagine if you're sensitive to it then it would ruin your relaxing sunbed time round the pool. So, all in all, our time there was nice but not amazing and we wouldn't return or recommend it as it currently stands. In my opinion and based on hotels where we've previously stayed, the cost of staying at this hotel far exceeds its current service and 'luxury' status - I really hope that the owners can step up and sort out all of the glitches and make the substance match the style...then you'd really be in for a treat.
