Midia in reception was extremely helpful and nice. John, the Property Manager, went out of his way to make us feel welcome. This is a beautiful property with excellent ocean views and within walking distance of the beach. The staff were all very friendly, helpful, and professional. We really enjoyed our stay.

The hotel itself was very nice and the pool and the pool bar were great. Good service and reasonable prices. Food was disappointing. Small selection, high prices and not very tasty. The staff was very friendly and all of the service was good. We rented a 2 BR apartment and I thought it could have been cleaned a little better. Nothing gross but just not up to my standards.

Our room was huge and clean, with a large bathroom. The spacious balcony was very private, surrounded by tropcal trees. Unfortunately, the room itself was nothing like any of the photos online. The furniture was stained and chipped. The room could have used a dresser and/or desk. There was an unpleasant smell, maybe disinfectant. I suspect that the photos show higher cost rooms. The name is also misleading. Shana is surrounded by beautiful tropical plants, but it is NOT on a beach. The beach is about a 5-minute walk through the forest, and it can't be seen from the hotel. The walk is extremely steep-- we saw older people really struggling to make it up the path. Apparently the beach is lovely at low tide, but when we went it was narrow, soggy and dirty. There was nowhere clean and dry to sit, unless you wanted to rent a chair. This explains why some reviewers loved the beach and others hated it. You have to ask ahead of time about the tide level. The hotel is isolated--there is nothing in walking distance. The only place to eat is at their very expensive restaurant. The menu looked good, and we planned to eat there. But we actually skipped dinner because they were blasting rock music and there was some sort of "beauty contest" going on. It wasn't possible to be seated away from the house and distraction. On the positive side, the staff at reception were knowledgeable and helpful. They neglected to warn us, though, about the monkeys. We had left the sliders open a bit while taking a nap, and we were awakened by a crash when a monkey knocked everything off the minibar. He ran all over the room and up the drapes before we got him out. He continued to come back, sometimes with friends, but we learned to keep the door shut tight and not leave anything on the balcony.

This place is the perfect combination of just the right amount of luxury with the wildlife and atmosphere of the rainforest. The path to the beach was the best part for us! The beach is small and not crowded and you get to mingle with some of the locals. Big Al rents kayaks and paddle boards and is a world of information! And in spite of the hotel warning us not to eat the food from the locals on the beach,it was amazing!! But you do have some risk. And you don't have to leave to find monkeys, butterflies, birds, iguanas...they are all right there! The road to the hotel is quite steep and windy so be careful if you've rented a car. If you don't rent a car you can get a taxi into town for $10 or take a bus for $1 but you'll have to walk to the end of the road (but there's no safe place to walk and the road is narrow so I wouldn't recommend it unless your the adventurous type) The staff was friendly and accommodating, the pool is just enough, and the food is fabulous! You have to try the Costa Rican rice at dinner! The monkeys come right to your table at breakfast but please don't feed them and hide the SUGAR! Educate yourself on how to not disturb their natural habitat. Al on the beach is a great resource! The blue Morph butterfly from Mexico is the most amazing thing I saw. So incredibly beautiful and large it looked fake! I hope you see one! Our experience here was awesome! The path to the beach is well maintained and beautiful and can be walked with flip flops in spite of what others have posted. Your in the rainforest and on a mountain so it's not flat. If your looking for total luxury and a paved path to the beach this is not the place. But if your looking for the perfect Costa Rican rainforest experience with nice people and a little luxury it's perfect!
