My husband and I fell in love with Barra 7 years ago. It was then, when we were introduced to the Grand Isla Navidad Resort, which we fell in love with immediately. We've been going back every year since our first introduction, for Christmas and New Years celebrations. We typically stay in a Parlor Suite, which is substantial in size, comfortable with king size bed, 2 bathrooms, dining area, small kitchen, etc. Not only do the waterslides, large pool, swim-up bar, boat taxis, restaurants, views, decor and location make us swoon, its the people we keep coming back to see. From the smiling, friendly faces at the front desk, the concierge, bartenders, chamber maids or Grand Cafe, La Plazuela, Antonio's and La Terazza restaurant staff, EVERYONE is a consummate professional with lovely demeanor and positive attitude. Our first breakfast back, we heard, "Welcome Home" from Lorenzo in the Grand Cafe. You can't ask for much more than that! It is like coming home. Wonderful live music in the afternoons at the pool or at La Plazuela, beautifully kept grounds and wonderful day trips to Coco Beach or Melaque...its simply a beautiful spot we will forever come back to.

We arrived with great expectations on the reviews and notes. But the reality hits hard. The rooms are very nice, except that at night some sort of alarm activates and stays on all night long, we try to report it to the concierge, from the restroom, because room phone didn't work, after the 3rd time in a 3 hour lapsus, they never arrived we decided to give it a shot and try to sleep... so spending the night trying to sleep with a noisy room is quite exhausting. Breakfast buffet is average, the basics, eggs, chilaquiles and some fruit, with fair taste. The other restaurants, too expensive for the quality delivered. Portions are small and taste is fair. A couple with average appetite like us, spent easily $100 USD for dinner with 1 entry and a small main course, no drinks included. Bottle water from the room is not free! it's about 40 pesos each =S Pools have cold water. No handicap access support, a lot of stairs for everywhere. Points on favour, the view is nice, the sea is calm and you have air conditioner in the room. Overall result: never coming back.

We stayed in the Grand Hotel with our extended family. Had a great time. The location has everything: Golf (27 holes), Marina, Lagoon & beach. Great excursions from Hotel to a run-aground ship (amazing), crocodile reserve, nearby Barra Navidad. The experience was truly highlighted by a staff that goes above and beyond to meet your needs. We traveled as a large group (20), and lunch was never a concern. In the restaurant Gustavo MagaƱa was outstanding making sure we had everything we needed and made our stay that much better. Great place to vacation!

We booked the all inclusive and were not disappointed. Yes the lunch area could add more choices so it doesn't get so repetitive, A great addition would be a coffee shop for us who truly enjoy a latte or cappuccino or other special coffees throughout the day. The breakfast buffets are wonderful as are the dinner buffets. Antonio's is definitely the highlight with it's amazing menu and service. The hotel itself must have been truly amazing in it's day. We never took the elevators but explored the labyrinth of corridors using the stairs and some of the areas with fountains and walls of pottery were so beautiful. It does need a bit of a facelift to get the plumbing and electrical areas looked after and while we were there (2 weeks) we did notice some things being done. Our room was great....beds a bit firm though...but a lovely view and huge bathrooms. What makes this place magnificent and will bring us back again are the people and their service..To mention a few names are Lorenzo and Jenifer in the mornings, Gustavo, Miguel, Juan, Luis and Isias. The guitar player/singer Emerson Magana always tried so hard to play our requests...We met and chatted a few times with the new operations of food manager Fernando? (I'm not 100% sure of his proper title) and when his wife and daughter arrived at the resort took the time to bring them by to meet and talk with us. Everyone is always trying very hard to make sure we were happy and taken care of. So friendly and with a good sense of humor as well. This is a very quiet resort and could possibly benefit with having a live show once in a while to spruce things up a bit....We will be looking forward to returning next year.
