This was definitely one of the best hotels we stayed in on our way to Puglia. You can drive right into its courtyard from the centre (good luck finding it on Satnav however - Matera is a maze of bone-white stone) and the rooms go from cool and cavernous reception to spectacular views. Extremely comfortable beds, superb bath, clear Wifi. The breakfast room is the only slight let-down as the breakfast unimaginative (awful cereals) and spoilt by a drizzle of music. However, well-informed and helpful staff pointed us to the best restaurant in town. This is both a romantic destination and an ideal stop-over if driving from Naples to Puglia.

This hotel is in the historic centre but you can drive to the front door through crowds of tourists, unload, and allow the valet to park the car for you. The rooms are spectacular, probably the best in town, and the roof terrace has an amazing view over the gorge. The spa has to be booked in advance, which may not be convenient but at least ensures privacy as numbers are strictly controlled. Breakfast was really excellent with a wide choice of best quality, good coffee - tip: go early before it gets crowded. The hotel staff are competent but overstretched because it seems there are so few of them.

Everything was great.....First hotel that we have ever been in and we been in many, that had a bed, 2 bottles of water, and 2 bowls set up in the room for our dog........Bravo....we will be back. All the staff were extremely nice and helpful and we were able to get the car right up to the front door.....

Once you actually get here it is a terrific hotel. It can be challenging on certain days with a lot of people in town. The tourist information called them and they drove down and met us and took us to the car park. You should sign up for parking when you make a reservation. The hotel is centrally located by the church at the top of the town. Everyone in the hotel was very friendly and the front desk was very helpful. They called Amy Weiderman to give us a private walking tour. She is American but been here for years and is vey good. Breakfast is a big spread and they will fix you bacon and eggs. We had room 206 and it was great.
