At this 5-star Hotel, all of the staff members deserve 6 stars for customer service. They were very welcoming and attentive to every need and request. There is a view of the Matera caves from large windows in the hotel hallway.

The Palazzo Gattini is an adventure to find if you are driving your own car but a wonderful experience once you arrive. The building is beautifully maintained and decorated with period furniture. The staff could not be more professional and efficient. Wonderful views from our room towards the Sassi made it quite magical at dusk. We ate dinner in the hotel's restaurant and it was the best meal we had during our vaction

I traveled to Italy with my wife and 6 other relatives. My wife previously stayed at the Palazzo Gattini, and recommended it to our group. It's located in the Piazza Duomo within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and Sasso Caveoso (cave dwellings). The hotel is in an historic stone building. There is a rooftop garden and a spa (which we didn't use). My room (number 304) was a spacious suite with a sitting area with sofa, a shower and large soaking tub. The bed was comfortable. There was an outdoor stone balcony that overlooks the city. There was a central elevator, but some rooms required walking up or down stairs to get to. You had to be careful taking the stairs to get somewhere. You had to know where to detour to, to get to your destination. Once I tried to get to the basement area, but I ended up on some lower floor at a dead end. I had to retrace my path, until I came to a floor I knew, and then go another way (to the elevator to get to the breakfast area). The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. They booked a knowledgeable guide to take us on an informative tour of the cave dwellings. They also helped us with restaurant reservations. The breakfast area was in a basement area, spread over 2 underground rooms. The assortment was OK.

In the heart of amazing old town Matera this hotel was an oasis from our fabulous daily exploration of the Sassi. From our room we overlooked the hills with caves from thousands of years ago and after 2 months holiday in Italy, I've decided this part of the trip was the highlight. The Palazzo faces a large piazza (complete with cafe) and is only metres from the Cathedral. Walk another 30metres and you can watch as the twinkling lights of the Sassi come up and its unforgettable. The Hotel fits in beautifully to the vibe of Matera; lots of stone in the interiors, gentle colours and cavernous ceiling that are a bit cave-like. The rooms are very nice. My husband has mobility issues and once the staff were aware of the problems he was having getting around, they immediately changed our room to make him more comfortable. I always think the best hotels are the ones that remedy an issue as soon as you alert them to it and this was the case with the PG. The service is unobtrusive and gentle and I found them to be a delight and keen to ensure we were happy. Only a 5 min walk to a greta little supermarket and several very nice, casual restaurants. We had the best piazza in Matera compared to everywhere else in Italy and that's saying something! The PG has a restaurant but unfortunately we didn't know about it so didn't visit! We LOVED staying here; location, luxury and amazing, enchanting city.

Matera is a magical place, and it’s clear why the Palazzo Gattini is a five star hotel. Not only is it so perfectly situated in the heart of the city (it really couldn’t be better located) but from the moment you step into the hotel you feel you’re somewhere special. Design-wise, this is a slick venue and you’re made to feel special by the reception team who so warmly welcome you and escort you to your room. Our room was lovely, high ceilings, large comfortable bed, and lovely shower and bath. It was all so lovely, but for me, there are some aspects to this hotel that, given we’d paid a premium and we’re staying in a five star palace, one would expect better of: - As we were escorted to our room we were advised of the rooftop bar that would be open from 5pm where we could enjoy the stunning views overlooking the city. In our room was a menu of drinks options for the bar. And so, we arrived at 5pm for a drink to find no bar staff there. We returned at 7pm and still no one there. Why give us advice that was not accurate? - We utilised the Spa whilst staying. The instructions were very clear to arrive fifteen minutes before our treatments. We therefore arrived at 14:45 to find the spa completely shut. We left and returned at 14:50 and again at 15:00 and still all the lights were off. We returned again at 15:10 and the spa was just being opened up (25 minutes after the original instruction). - The Spa treatments were lovely, and the spa staff very friendly. I can’t say however that the treatments had any healing or therapeutic benefits. I came away from our couples massage with the same knots and muscle pains that I had hoped would be eradicated. I’d recommend the spa, but don’t go expecting expert therapy. - In our room we had a bath with a jacuzzi facility. However the jacuzzi facility did not work. If it did, the room would benefit from instructions. Whilst enjoying my bath I also noticed that under the rim of the top of bath there was a lot of mildew/mould and some hairs. This is where the design finish is bad and it wasn’t being cleaned properly. - Breakfast was only so so. I particularly didn’t like, and indeed take great offence to the fact that the waitresses (aside from showing us where everything was on arrival on the first day) made no effort to offer us coffees or hot drinks unless you went to them to ask. I also learned that some people were either offered or asked for cooked options (e.g eggs/omelettes etc). We were not offered this at anytime and I’d expect this service as standard. The points I raise here are to highlight that the hotel still has some way to go to justify the five star status (excluding its location, general design and friendliness of reception staff/concierge; because it totally deserves the status for these things).
