There are many hotels in Matera built directly into the caves that look very cool. My daughter stayed in the nicest one. My wife and I were traveling with my other daughter so an open room with a bathtub and toilet in the center of the room were not going to do. I would recommend Palazzo Gattini to anyone as the best option in Matera. The staff in the entire hotel from the front desk to the spa to the breakfast room were all extremely helpful and were able to speak good English. The room was very nice with a great bathroom and an amazing view of the caves. Being located directly across from the cathedral was a nice bonus.

I've stayed in many luxury hotels but this one managed to blow my mind! Its well situated and the staff members are all very kind!!! The front desk staff were very lovely without being intrusive... and the woman who worked in the breakfast area... she was so sweet and really cared and wanted to make everyone happy... the breakfast had a really amazing selection and I really enjoy eating fruit for breakfast and they had a lot of variety! I opted to stay in a room that was the least expensive but I wouldn't have known it by looking at it... it was so spacious with high ceilings and a gorgeous little balcony in the room and in the bathroom as well and it was decorated so tastefully I could have stayed in the room forever! .. and the spa is WONDERFUL!!!! Hands down the best spa ever and I didn't even get a spa treatment I just used the facilities... you really have to see it for yourself. Stay here!!! It's magical :)

This impossible to reach hotel was not worth the effort at all. I am begging, no, yearning for a Holiday Inn right now. Billed as a luxury hotel, we drove into the city, only to find all access blocked to anywhere near the hotel. When we called the front desk (thankfully we had an iPhone and international access) we were told to input the directions into our GPS, We had already done this. We called again, to be told the same. They did not volunteer to pick us up until we insisted on it. We finally found a landmark and called the hotel to insist on being picked up. Finally,a van came and we followed the van to the hotel garage, about two miles from the hotel. We were never to see our car until we left the city. When we checked in, the apologies were thin. We were "upgraded" to a room which was two floors, with the bedroom up 15 steps. No bath on the sleeping floor . To use the bathroom at night, we needed to descend 15 steps in the dark, with no railing with a flashlight. The shower was a disaster. It sprayed everywhere but on our body but mostly on the floor. After a weary day driving, the front desk man, (poor English) tried to help adjust the water to no avail. It was all downhill from here. At this point we just hope to survive another day and night and can't wait to get the hell out of this "luxury" (not) hotel.

Everything about this boutique hotel is lovely. We did though have an oddly configured room with a separate sink area to the main bathroom but apart from that no issues. Staff were helpful. I was anxious directing my husband in by rental car so very glad to get to square on way in and be met by the motorbike guide- he is not employed by the hotel but well worth 5 Euros, even for the short distance, as I wouldn't have known how to drive through the small streets to get there. Enjoyed a very competent and relaxing massage at the spa.

We were booked into the Visconte, but they had some problem with the plumbing in our room. We were moved to their sister hotel. They gave us a spacious room with a direct view over the valley to the caves of the original dwellers of the area. We had a view over the rooftops of Matera, quite nice. The hotel and community is English challenged, but it was not an issue. Everyone was so gracious and kind. The hotel provided us with a guide for a three hour tour, Prof. Michele Zasa. He was great, try to use him. [email protected]
