Beware of Double Charging for Accommodation

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

As this is the second time this has happened to me I feel compelled to write this review. My husband and I spent this past weekend 27/4 & 28/4 at the hotel through a Luxury Escapes experience. We had a Prestige Suite with Club Benefits. It was a pleasant experience, however, the hot canapes were rather underwhelming. The payment was made through LE and this was confirmed by the person at reception at checkout 'You are all good to go, this was paid through LE' he said. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a large amount was sitting in my 'pending' account on my bank statement, not the $100 for incidentals which was originally told to us. I immediately queried this last night and was told someone would call me back - no one did. I emailed the Club Sofitel team, no response. I called the desk this morning and was offhandedly told that the account would be credited but it would take a few days for the bank to clear the amount despite the fact that this was affecting our credit limit. No explanation was given and this really irritated me because the same thing happened last year when 3 rooms were paid for prior to checking in and the exact same thing happened with amounts being withheld for accommodation expenses despite it being paid for already. It took a while (days) for the accounts department at the hotel to sort this debacle out!! I would suggest people be very mindful of this, if you don't check your account you could be paying double. It has left a very bad taste for sure, doubt whether Sofitel Melbourne will be seeing us again anytime soon......

Checked out early because nope

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

The hotel is located in a nice part of town with great views and courteous staff, however, I checked out early because: 1. As soon as I entered my room, I noticed a slightly sour musty smell which I later discovered was coming from the pillows, like they needed to be washed badly or thrown out. I asked for them to be changed, which they did, but by then I’d become skeptical about the overall cleanliness of the room. 2. I read that they refurbished the rooms in 2022–where? Couldn’t tell, especially the bathroom which was in poor shape. See photos. 3. Robes have seen better days. Same can be said for towels. No extra blanket in the room. 4. Rooms are not well soundproofed. Even though I was on L45, I could still hear the hum of traffic noise, voices from next room, and entertainment from downstairs. 5. The furnishings in the lobby and public lounge look tired. Also note that there is no pool, sauna or spa here (in case you’re looking for that information), although you can request an in-room massage. I left early mainly because I couldn’t trust the bedding, and the noise infiltrating the room. Overall, Sofitel in Melbourne seems to be well below the standard of the Sydney, Darling Harbour one which I stayed at last year and enjoyed. I thought that the standards would at least match since it’s the same group. Do not recommend.

Ideal Melbourne hotel

Fantastic hotel. Stayed 4 nights. Our room was on the 40th floor. Hotel is in a terrific location on Collins St. Easy walking to many cafes, restaurants and bars. Room was spacious and well appointed. Great bed and pillows. Used the gym on 36th floor every day during our stay. Definitely among the best equipped hotel gyms I've experienced. What stunning views! Enjoyed wine, cocktails and snacks at the Atrium. Will definitely return.

Luxury Hotel falls short on Dining and Room Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

As a frequent customer of Sofitel (Sydney and Wellington I am bitterly disappointed in our stay so far over Easter break 2024 at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins! Whist there is no doubt the hotel is well situated geographically in the CBD and rooms nicely appointed, I was shocked at the lack of service to our room and the big one being the famous "35" fine dining Restaurant (the only one in the Hotel) is totally closed from the 29 Feb - 1st April (not even the evenings on the weekend) during our stay. If the hotel wants to operate like this then they should clearly advertise they are totally closed for main dining during public holidays including weekends so guests no what to expect at time of booking or before arrival. I just doubled checked the restaurant situation with the reception staff (Fri). This is a disgrace and how does this hotel have a 5-star rating when it closes their only restaurant to guests on the weekend! There was even no notice on the room service system, web site or a courtesy letter. Worst still when we attempted to experience their famous petite Haute Croissanterie for breakfast it too was closed for all 4 days of our staying forcing us to go outside the hotel this morning for breakfast. We came to Melbourne to spend time with family and made plans for then to enjoy some of the nice food the Sofitel offers ...this will not happen now.. so why would I ever stay here again? Take the room service or lack of today. We came back expecting the food tray cleared but they left the rotting scraps on the plate. Also on check in yesterday there was virtually no bathroom disposables present. The Sofitel Melbourne on Collins in my opinion stands out as a poor example of this hotel chain compared to my recent stays this year (Feb and early March) at the Sydney and Wellington hotels. I will never forget this hotel had no restaurant open for our stay or could bother to clean our room properly. There are so many good alternatives in the Melbourne CBD so we will not stay here ever again.
