Reviews for DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne - Flinders Street
We stayed here for 3 nights in late November. We were welcomed nicely upon arrival and having Diamond status with Hilton meant we got free wi-fi and water which was greatly appreciated. As has been stated they is no executive lounge but we received a full buffet breakfast and it was well presented once we found where everything was. About my cautions in the title. Most of the rooms are small by usual Hilton standards. We had a Flinders Street Station view room which gave us a great view of the station, unfortunately most of the station was covered in scaffolding due to the station's renewal. This is by no means the hotel's fault but was disappointing nonetheless. We were also surprised we had not been offered a floor on a higher floor as my profile states. The noise issue is something I wish that had been dealt with when the hotel was refurbished. The windows do not block any street noise so all night we heard loud mufflers and motorbikes as well as sirens. This was disturbing to our sleep. I would say the hotel did answer our questions but did not always give us a direct answer. The air conditioning failed one afternoon and when we asked about it were told two different stories. Fortunately it did cool down later, but we wish hotels would answer questions directly.

The Doubletree is opposite Flinders Street station and close to several tram stops on different lines. The hotel does not have a business center (but they will print documents for you) and it doesn't have a pool. I need to use a terminal and wound up going to an internet shop in a convenience store on Elizabeth Street several blocks North--the shop that had operated in the Doubletree's neighborhood recently had closed. Some rooms do not have windows. I was upgraded to a room that had a view of the next block to the North. The room was spacious and well laid out. The one oddity was that the bathroom lights ran only when the key card was placed in a sensor/holder. People experienced in traveling through Asia will recognize this, except it usually runs everything in the room, so it was odd to enter the room, turn on the light but see this odd device that didn't actually seem to control anything. The bar was reasonable and the breakfast buffet was quite good. There are many restaurants nearby and the main shopping area is relatively short distance away, but note that it's easy to walk past the hotel and miss the entrance.

Once again the Double Tree (DT) Team delivered a great experience. The location of DT is well placed to deliver excellent Melbourne experiences. I would highly recommend DT to travelers seeking a par excellence stay. Well done DT Team!
Positive - friendly personnel at reception and breakfast - location, location, location (2 minutes to Flinders Station, supermarket next door, 5 minutes to Southbank promenade, tram/train station in front of hotel, etc.) - wifi was free (for me as a HHonors member) and fast (4,3 Mbps) – but daily re-login necessary - comfy bed - walk-in shower Negative - the rooms are just too small (like a shoebox) - my room had only one small window, no view and no direct daylight (as maybe 80% of the rooms do not have) since there is the next building right next to it (maybe 2 meters away – you could look into the windows there – don’t know whether they can look into your room) - the rooms to the back of the building (e.g. rooms x13 or x14) have big windows and direct daylight, but they heat up in the afternoon and there are ventilators from the building next door which make a lot of noise - small closet, not enough space - breakfast is ok, but since there is no change in the offerings at all, it was getting boring after a couple of days
It's a great central location and the rooms have a beautiful contemporary fit-out. What they don't tell you however is that the rooms are TINY, the bathrooms are beautiful but none of their rooms have a bath which was a problem for me travelling with a small child. I booked a room with "Fliders Station view" but what I received was a shoebox looking at the walls of the building next door which was about 2 meters away. They also don't tell you that this hotel has no parking and no ability to stop in front whatsoever. If you are driving you'll have to park at the nearest parking station (2-500 meter away) and you'll have to carry your bags back to the hotel. Overall it is a clean and tastefully decorated hotel with a comfortable Hilton bed at a central location. If you are driving however or travel with children this hotel is best to be avoided.
