We took the spirit of Memphis and one of its legendary citizens, Hugh “Hu.” Lawson White Brinkley, and channeled it into a thoughtfully designed hotel experience. Beautiful rooms feature everything you need and want for a restful, wonderful stay, and it’s all done with style and substance the Hu. way. Inspired by generations of Memphians who do things a new way, Hu. welcomes you to an ambitious and visionary hotel experience in the Southeast. Hu (hue) Hotel features 110 rooms and suites, complimentary Wi-Fi in all areas, Lucy's Cafe and Hu Roof with its open-air rooftop bar and panoramic views of the Mississippi River.

The best feature of Hu Hotel is its location. As an older building that has been converted to a hotel, it does have “personality.” As we entered the hotel, we found no roomy lobby for checkin. Instead, you see a bar counter with no bar and a dining room to the right with no restaurant. (I don’t count a $10 breakfast buffet as a restaurant.) checkin is to the left and consists of a one-person counter and a tiny seating area to the left. The lady who checked us is was super. She fully explained everything about parking and the few amenities the hotel has. (No ice machines except on the first floor!) After chatting with her and getting our room key, we made our way to the room. We stayed on the 8th floor, and there are only 8 rooms on the entire floor! That meant our two-bed space was roomy. The hotel is older, so the only complaint I have is the carpet. It was stained and needed replacing, badly. I always take my flip flops to wear in hotels and was glad I hadn’t forgotten them this time! Everything else was clean and comfortable. We stayed 2 nights, and during that time, we had what we needed and everyone was friendly and welcoming. If we return to downtown Memphis, we would stay at the Hu Hotel again. (The only major drawback I found is the rooftop bar. I’m not sure if it’s controlled by the hotel or a separate entity, but the “welcoming” atmosphere stops at the roof. Unless you’re a regular, I get the feeling that you’ll get the same rude treatment we did. We wanted to visit the rooftop on a Saturday night. Maybe that was our problem—only regulars are welcome at that time with literally every table marked “Reserved,” a $20 cover charge for music, and a crowd much younger than we are. Anyway, hopefully you’ll have better luck.)

Overall it is a good location. Great view of river from Roof bar. The room was a bit worn and dingy. Big stain on ‘indoor/outdoor carpeting in room. We asked or ADA room but they did not have any to use. The bathroom was not disabled friendly at all. Low toilet, no grab bars, high tub etc. Had to skip the shower on our stay. OTOH the staff was friendly. If you choose this place, lower your expectations.

Gena and Cam were absolutely amazing. I will be here all summer!

People are friendly. The hotel itself is run down and looks tatty. Stains on carpets, tiles in bathroom have mildew and shower head coming away from wall. Plastic cutlery provided. Breakfast is buffet style but the food was ok.

We really could have not been more pleased by the people that work for the Madison (as a real team) the facilities, the food, the ambience, etc. If all of Memphis businesses had your corporate attitude, top to bottom towards its customers Memphis would be "ON FIRE"!!!! We will definitely be back again, soon!

This is my favorite hotel ever. A perfect combination of understated elegance, perfect cleanliness, beautiful appointments and warm, friendly, helpful staff. Thanks for a nice but short stay!

The Madison is the benchmark for all other hotels we stay at in other cities. It is an excellent hotel and we stay there each time we're in Memphis.
