Hotel Quintessence in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada

Celebrated for their majestic beauty, Quebec's Laurentian Mountains provide a stunning backdrop for Hotel Quintessence. Tucked into the foot on Mont Tremblant, northwest of Montréal, this Old World boutique hotel was declared a "gem" in November 2004 by Town & Country. Decadently spacious suites, all with French doors that open onto private balconies or terraces, feature magnificent views of Lake Tremblant. Savor traditional specialties at Restaurant la Quintessence, sip a fine vintage in a secluded wine cellar turret and spoil yourselves with a massage at Spa Sans Sabots.

A destination this classic deserves activities to match. Witness the ritual sugaring of maple syrup, play a round on a nearby golf courses, visit the legendary Circuit Mont Tremblant or cruise the lake on the inn's circa 1910 33-foot motorboat. During cooler months the winter activities concierge will be happy to help you plan cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and dog-sledding. For an unforgettable experience, embark on an aerial tour over Lake Ouimet or visit Le Scandinave, offering Scandinavian baths, thermal falls and deer watching.

First visit to Hotel Quintessence with my wife in October for one night and I’ll just say that it’s been the best hotel we ever stayed. Fairly small resort (30 suites) all of them with lake view on Tremblant lake. All rooms have a big fire place, a nice living area, jacuzzi bath and a fairly large balcony where you have an outstanding view of the pool and lake. We decided to have dinner at their own restaurant with some friends and all of us were really pleased with our meals. Great staff, perfect location next to the ski village. It you’re willing to spend a few more dollars for high quality, you won’t regret your choice.

I've held off writing this review for a few weeks because I'm not entirely sure how to articulate how I feel about this restaurant. Our night at Hotel Quintessence was absolutely beautiful. We sat on the rock lined terrace overlooking gorgeous Lac Tremblant. Our wine was superb, the service was excellent, and I really, really wanted to like the food. Unfortunately, we found almost all of our dishes to be lacking. We love a good tuna tartare or ceviche and we've had them at dozens of restaurants. At Hotel Quintessence, this is listed as their "signature dish". I really recommend that they rethink this designation, as it was one of the worst that we've had. We did order their beef tartare and it was very, very good; definitely the high point of our dinner. Both my husband and I ordered the pork for our main course, which sounded amazing on the menu, but was overcooked and not particularly tender. The sides were also pretty flavourless which left us feeling very underwhelmed with the food. Our desserts were excellent, so that was a high point as well. Even though our meal wasn't very good, our night on the patio was lovely. If this had been a moderately priced restaurant, I probably wouldn't even have commented on the food. This restaurant is quite pricey (Our meal, for two, was over $400), so it just seems unacceptable to me that the food is so weak. I suspect that they have a discerning clientele, and I can't imagine that most of their patrons aren't incredibly disappointed with the food. The location, hotel and service is so good that I would love to go back, but sadly, we likely won't because the food was so mediocre.

If you opt to stay there, the rooms are beautiful overlooking a lake with a balcony and fireplace but the food of very overpriced and of poor quality. Take the basic package and eat out. Staff is polite and friendly, but poorly trained. I was often misinformed, even when I double checked on what was said.

Amazing place, finally a real 5-stars room/service/food. Great place to relax and enjoy a weekend in a wonderful quiet place. There is no other place around that are as luxurious and with equally perfectly attentive staff. Will return.
