Hotel Nelligan in Montreal, Canada

Montreal is a city filled with energy, romance and culture, known for its splendid cuisine, sunny terraces, art and diversity. The same applies to Hotel Nelligan. Nestled in two adjoining nineteenth century buildings on picturesque Saint-Paul Street, the hotel is the perfect place to get acquainted with the charms of Old Montreal, like the Basilica Notre-Dame, the Old Port and Chinatown. The 105 rooms of the hotel feature fireplaces, exposed stone, brick walls, double whirlpool tubs, and tasteful furnishings. With such a graceful atmosphere, you will be continually reminded that this is a hip and happening metropolitan boutique hotel.

Because the hotel is named for the 19th-century Québécois poet Emile Nelligan, his lines adorn the walls of rooms and of Verses Restaurant, one of the country's finest contemporary French restaurants. Located ground level, through huge windows and the reflection of large 10-foot mirrors, guests can enjoy the natural light and the flow of the vibrant street life, all while dinning in a protected and intimate ambiance, accented by long flowing curtains and exquisite modern décor. In summer, the perfect party moves to the rooftop terrace bar, which happens to have the best nighttime view of the surroundings. Whether it be letting the hotel pamper you with complimentary wine and cheese, or having a refreshing workout in the gym, you will find that everything at Hotel Nelligan exudes good taste and charm.

This boutique-hotel, which pays tribute to Émile Nelligan, Québec's most celebrated poet, first opened its doors 15 years ago in 2002. We stayed here just one night for a pre-flight stopover in Montreal. Exterior does not look promising but it is in contained in four adjoining buildings that date back to the 1850s and the interior and rooms are both historic and contemporary. Note that there are a lot of building works going on nearby in 2017. Check in was painless - although we wished we had not declined help from the Porter as the route to some of the rooms takes you up and down small flights of steps! The room itself certainly had a wow factor as you entered in terms of space and decor - it featured some industrial looking electrical fittings (albeit one electrical socket was hanging off its wall mounting) and exposed brickwork - but bang up to date fittings and furnishings. King sized and very comfortable bed. All the amenities you might expect and some you might not! It had a well stocked mini-bar (but also snacks/nibbles/jelly-beans and a intimate love kit!), an imitation log fire and a lovely bathroom (with a very deep spa bath) and separate walk -in shower. The turndown service included chocolates and a handy next day weather forecast card. We dined in Méchant Boeuf - which was good but dimly lit and buzzing with live DJ and loud club music - perhaps we should have tried the alternative the Verses Restaurant. We did not sample the Spa & Wellness Centre. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The concierge made some good recommendations on sightseeing and equipped us with a detailed but free map. I was slightly irritated that when we checked out they mentioned the roof top Terrace Bar which has views over the Old Port - but that had closed for the season the evening we had checked in - shame they had not mentioned that! Anyway in summary excellent - almost faultless - even in context of nearly CAD$700 charge on check out and noisy nearby building works.

From the warm welcome we received on arrival to our departure after a 5 night stay, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at this wonderful, stylish, very comfortable and spotlessly clean hotel, which is in a great location. Breakfasts are really good, the fantastic range of fresh fruit that was available was a highlight. All staff we encountered went out of their way to be friendly and helpful.

Lovely continental breakfast with everything one could possible want for breakfast. The staff at breakfast could not do enough. The rooms were clean, large nicely decorated. Loved the brick. The beds were comfy and the sheets high quality. Location in Old Montreal was great. So many restaurants and shopping close by. JUST WONDERFU !!

We couldn’t really fault the Nelligan – a historic building in the centre of old Montreal converted into a stylish comfortable and modern hotel. Our room (307) was large and very well equipped. A huge bed with a deep and comfortable mattress, and lovely pillows. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Continental breakfast was good, although seating limited. Highly recommended.

I stayed at Hotel Nelligan while attending a conference at Centre Phi. The location was perfect! The hotel is very nice, contemporary and clean. Exposed brick throughout gives it a certain charm. Staff was super helpful with anything I needed, and the chocolates and water at turn down was a very nice touch. Walking distance from lots of culture, restaurants and of course Notre-Dame. The steakhouse Méchant Boeuf is a great spot also, right in the hotel. Merci!
