Let's start with some context. We had just completed a 10 day Regent cruise with our eldest daughter who had just turned 40 and her boyfriend which started from New York and ended in Montreal. This was not our first Regent cruise. Last year, we took back to back Regent cruises through the Baltics and then around the British Isles. So, we were used to fine accommodations at sea with a spacious penthouse suite as well as great food. So, when we got to Montreal, we checked into the Ritz, shipped our kids home (parcel post) and started the second phase of our vacation, spending two additional days in Montreal, then renting a car and driving through New England. Being used to luxury, as usual on our vacations, at sea did not prepare me for the luxury of the Ritz Carlton Montreal. We checked in after disembarking from the Regent ship on October 8. The room wasn't ready. With apologies the courteous concierge staff arranged for tickets for the "Revolution" exhibit down the street at the museum. By arranging the tickets, although the exhibit itself was disappointing (separate review to follow), we avoided an interminable wait and long lines. When we got back later in the afternoon after being notified that our room was ready, friendly staff took us up to room 1001. I walked in and was astonished at the opulence and luxury of our suite. Our spacious suite on the Regent cruise paled in comparison. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. Over all, I again contemplated the steadiness and dependability of the Ritz Carlton brand. A moment digression here. My wife and I travel a lot. Those of you who follow me on Trip Advisor, thank you for doing so (and there are a lot of you) and you know this. Work hard, play hard is our mantra. We live frugally at home but travel high. We pay more and expect more because we are active travelers. In Europe, we have been staying at Four Seasons, for example, in Prague, Geneva and Milan. The Four Seasons brand is exemplary but they lack something that Ritz Carlton has -- loyalty provisions. So, we switched after discussing the comparatives. And, the Ritz Carlton Montreal was our first international Ritz Carlton. Domestically, we have stayed at Ritz Carlton's with full satisfaction in Miami, Hollywood, Sarasota and New York. And, with one exception with this visit (which arguably was not the fault of the Ritz Carlton staff) which I will talk about later, we weren't disappointed. Anyway, when I saw the room, I realized what comparative luxury from Regent and Ritz Carlton was and to extol the superlatives of Ritz Carlton in no way denegrates Regent cruises. And, then, there was the bathroom. The friendly staff showed us this magnificent bathroom with its state of the art toilet that raised the seat cover as you approached. I kid you not. As I stood there, mouth agape, as she demonstrated it by approaching (not sitting of course), she chuckled while explaining about the lights that led from the bedroom to the bathroom lest you trip (I never saw those; maybe she was kidding about that). She said that the toilet does everything but "go" for you. Alrighty then. Well, we thoroughly enjoyed our Ritz visit. The staff could not have been friendlier. It is true, they missed a turn down one night, but apologetically showed up quickly when we called down to the desk. I thought we had been fed well on Regent, which we had. But, when I tasted the home made pastries on the buffet, I realized what true delicious pastry really was. The buffet was plentiful and delicious. The breakfast restaurant touted table side breakfasts to a garden which we requested. But, it was raining the first morning of our visit. No problem. There was a canvas retractable roof with plexiglass windows. So, my wife and I were treated to a charming buffet breakfast accompanied by rain on the roof while looking at the beautiful garden. Breakfast service was wonderful. Our server even permitted me French conversation which I always enjoy. So, what was the one exception to our wonderful visit to Ritz Carlton Montreal. Well, on our first evening, we went for a drink at the Palm Court. First, the service was very slow, to the point, that I had to hunt down our bar server who wasn't too happy about it. Then, after we left and went up to the room, within 5 minutes of being in the Palm Court, my wife noticed that she had left her scarf in the bar. We immediately telephoned down to the Palm Court. But, in the 5 max 10 minute time gap between getting our check at the Palm Court and calling down to the Palm Court, the scarf was gone. So, either the very next customer took it, or someone else did. Next morning we complained to the hotel concierge who promised to look at the cameras in the Palm Court but never got back to us. Not good. And, about that bathroom toilet, well, the most I'll admit to was to having some fun with it by approaching it and then backing away a few times to see the seat open and shut. My wife says I act like a kid and have never grown up, to which I reply, what's wrong with that ?

Alice from guest relations reached out before our trip and insured that we were well taken care of. The hotel is very clean and the rooms were comfortable. We especially enjoyed the pool and sauna facilities.

Dropped by this Grand Old Hotel and had supper and a drink in the lobby bar. For me it brought back old memories of visiting as a child with my parents. It was especially so, when you visit at the holiday time and see the winter model train setup. The food and service was exceptional.

There is no experience like the RITZ MONTREAL.Be gracious and be treated graciously from the time you wake up till the time you reawaken. The bedding is superb the service ,meals, drinks and the afternoon tea are blast for the senses.A definite ten plus .
