Reviews for Hotel Le St James
Firstly, there are 9/10 steps up to the front door - be warned if you have mobility problems. Our room seemed very dark and just a view of building opposite across narrow street but the furniture was interesting and it was a comfortable room. We had a choice of a queen bed or 2 doubles .... queen isn’t really big enough for us but doubles when on holiday is not ideal either - but that is the travel agent’s fault for booking this hotel. The bed was extremely comfortable, so full marks for that. Bathroom was ok but not once in 3 mornings did I get a hot shower, just lukewarm and the temperature kept fluctuating. Food was fine but service variable and we found it odd to have 2 large tv screens, albeit on silent, in the bar/restaurant area, not what we would expect, very distracting and spoiled the ambience. We found reception ok but generally they kept their heads down if you walked past, as if they didn’t want you to ask them anything. Overcharged by around 89$, soon resolved but not a nice way to leave. We’d left our cases with the concierge as we weren’t due at the airport until late afternoon. When we returned to collect them, we were cross-questioned very closely before being allowed to use the toilets - we’d been there for 3 nights and he said he thought he recognized us, so why make us feel bad and have to explain ourselves? Overall, wouldn’t recommend or return.

Stayed 3 nights at the hotel at the end of September. Booked a junior suite. Room was excellent and comfortable. Only negative was lack of view, but was compensated by being very quiet and private. Staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful from desk, to concierge, to restaurant staff. All in all, made for a very enjoyable experience. The size of the hotel was a plus in that in was not so busy to be distracting. Would definetely stay there again when visiting Montreal. Also, was very convenient for visiting old town or downtown.

Recently stayed at The St James hotel for a special occasion which we were looking forward to for the entire year since my booking of it. Its grandeur and history has always been appealing and Ive held high expectations of the property which fell short during our one night stay in August. The hotel exterior is beautiful and its location is easily accessible, and situated well in Old Montreal and the main downtown streets close by. Upon arrival we were greeted by an attendant at the door however, they did not assist with door opening from hire car or bags. Upon check in the front desk agent welcomed us quickly and provided our keys to the room. It was a quick, cold rehearsed welcome, with no water offering, or details of the property at all. We were excited to open the door, however upon entering realized it didn't have an old world charm or grandeur that I expected to experience through hotel photos and the category in which we had booked. At 500$ a night we expected more. Granted the room was clean, minus some issues in the bathroom, but It was very modern and lacking old world charm and character, which is why we were staying there in the first place. They provided a large bottle of water and a gourmet granola bar as an Welcome/birthday amenity for our arrival in the room. Thoughtful, but expected more from a hotel of this class I would say. Seemed pretty cheap. The bathroom was marble throughout, with high pressure shower and a soak in bath tub. There was one bar of soap, amenities were decent quality. The toilet wasn't cleaned properly from the previous guest which was apparent right away. The bed was comfortable and white linens crisp. The black out curtains were optimal and the size of the room was great. The decor was modern again, it just wasn't anything but something you would expect at a Westin Hotel we felt. We asked if it was possible to have a chauffeur or if the hotel had a car and was told "No", however I was more surprised that they didn't try to make arrangements for us, or assist in alternatives. We just ended up using uber on our own. Even when we would ask for directions or recommendations the concierge or front desk would not provide print outs or assist in anyway imaginable that would be perceived as going beyond expectations or simply assisting a tourist / guest in any way that most luxury hotels would do in this caliber. The hotel lacks personalized service in this aspect. it didn't seem most of the employees held passion in this regard. They were just working, and you were just a guest, money has been paid =nothing more, is the feeling you get. The next morning our concierge was helpful when I called down indeed in recommending a breakfast venue within walking distance, which was 1 positive. After breakfast and returning to the property, we wanted to use the spa, sauna and gym which we inquired about previously. I called down to the front desk to ask its location and was told it was not accessible since someone else was using the Spa however we could still utilize the gym adjacent to it. I opted to return to the room, even though we were told the previous night we could use the sauna, however my partner decided to use the gym. I went to the front desk since no-one was at the spa/gym desk and after opening the door to the left could see it was an employee area with staff passing by but no-one stopping to wonder why I was there, I went to the front desk to inquire when it would be available during the time my partner was at the gym, and was told they could maybe arrange something later in the day or evening, which I declined since we were checking out shortly. My partner returned from his workout and informed me that he was yelled at by the spa attendant because he was using the gym. Apparently the sounds of lifting weights, and using the machines and him "breathing heavy during his workout" was "unacceptable" , "disruptive" as she told him since a spa treatment was going on in the room adjacent. The hotel employee asked my partner to please be quiet while putting the weight downs, and with his feet, and using the machines and if he could not- to consider working out during another time, among other comments!! My partner was simply working out alone, in silence. Yet he is being summoned to tip toe for another guest? He was saddened by this and felt like a guest who was not welcomed or second in this regard. He was told he could use the gym only to be told later that using the gym disrupts the other guest next door having their spa treatment!!? So what can you do at this property? The front desk team could care less and didn't comment on anything above. They lack empathy or the ability to recognize the needs of a guest or make them feel special. There was so much hope, excitement and expectations for this property, that in the end all fell short, I would recommend Le Crystal, Ritz Carleton or Fairmont over this property any day. For being a member of the ILH group, it should of been much more or at least something equivalent of a 5 star experience.

Stayed here for one night following a cruise. Our room was not ready when we arrived (10am) which we expected and the Concierge was very helpful and stored our luggage. We went out for a walk and returned around Noon again still no room and in all fairness the check in time is 4pm. By 2.30pm still nothing but the girl on the desk changed our room allocation and gave us one on the 11th floor. Lovely big room with enormous bathroom and lots of towels - only problem was it took almost 10 minutes for the water to get hot in the shower/sink! We asked for late check out as we had an evening flight and were given 2pm - again the Concierge stored our luggage while we sat in the Library for a long time as our flight was not until 10pm. The building itself is very impressive and the breakfast was excellent served in a dining room with enormous high ornate ceilings and walls. I understand the building was originally a Merchant Bank and you can imagine the customers in the late 1800's..... The staff were very very helpful and welcoming. The hotel is well situated for the Old City of Montreal with its many cafes and upmarket boutiques.

We stayed at Le St. James this past weekend and I can describe it in one word.. Perfect! What a gem in the middle of Old Montreal. Couldn't have been more pleased with the staff, our accommodations and service. Excellent stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Can't wait to go back.
