First off, I am no fan of boutique hotels with noisy rooftop bars, stylish but nonsensical room designs, and incomprensible lighting and bathroom fixtures. This place is not of those. I had a junior suite (the "10" line) in the back of the building (you sleep with your head literally next to a brick wall), which had a huge adjoining room and the longest desk I have ever seen in a hotel room. It was dead quiet at night, and no noise from next-door neighbors. There was a lot of shelf space in the bathroom and easy-to-use faucet and shower controls. Yes, it's raw-looking brick and concrete decor, but not pretentiously so. The location, in Old Town, is great, mainly because it is a bit west of where the action begins on Rue St. Paul. While that makes it a bit of a walk to restaurants and/or bars (am I at Place Jacques Cartier yet???), the location also makes it not as crowded with tourists and night revelers. Also, Rue McGill is a great through-street shortcut and easy walk to downtown action on Rue St. Catherine or St Denis near UQAM. And unlike the usual dead-eyed young staff at boutique hotels, the staff here was eager to help. Now the quibbles/suggestions for the hotel: -Room service, though 24-hour, had very limited choices, and quality was pretty poor. Maybe a sandwich that isn't a Reuben? -No clock in the room! -Not enough outlets near the desk area; only a spaghetti-line tangle of extension cords under the desk (tip to travelers: bring one of those small Belkin power strips) -Ditch the free-standing I-pod docks with the now obsolete 32-pin connectors; waste of space, just get lightning-connector docks as part of a new clock radio for the room -The metallic lobby needs a re-design. There are tables in it as you enter, and a steel door to a kitchen situated right by the passenger elevator, making you think, am In a restaurant or a lobby? Given the nice old exterior, just too modish. Overall, though, because of the huge size of the room, the quiet, and the Old Town location, I'd recommend.

We stayed at the Gault for four nights in a corner suite on the 4th floor (there are five floors). Room was spacious, huge as a matter of fact. Had a kitchenette in it that we didn't request. But the extra fridge came in handy. Bed was very comfortable with very nice linens. Suite was furnished in a modern, hipster vibe. Some may call sparse, but mire than comfortable. Location, from our point of view was great. Close (easy walk) to the Old Port area and Notre Dame Basilica. Couple notable hotels in that area, but much noisier and touristy than around the Gault. The other heavy hotel area is uptown near McGill U and the art museum. This is the area with the posh designer stores and the ultra-lux hotels. Not our cup of tea, but there you go. From the Gault to the museum/McGill area is only a 20-25 minute walk. Don't forget the rail system. Bottom line on Gault: Great location for us. Very comfortable and spacious suite. Quiet. But the best part: The staff. Very friendly and oh so helpful in the hotel and great on restaurants and getting around. Certainly cheaper than the Ritz-Carlton/Four seasons level. But still most people would consider it pricey. As many know and first-timers will learn: Montreal ain't a cheap town.

First timer and very knowledgeable of the other boutique hotels in the Old Port. This was a sublime, top notch, wonderfully staffed and maintained jewel. Eric was superb. I will not stay anywhere else until someone tops this place.

We visited Montreal for a conference. And after staying almost two weeks in Hotel Gault, we can say, we have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world, but to be honest, we had the best time in this hotel and cannot recommend it enough! One of the main reasons for this strong statement is that all the staff is so professional, friendly and helpful (esp Ahmed, Alyona, Corentin, Judy, Margot, Mariam, Nim and Salem), they made the stay a real pleasant like home. Also, because the location is perfect- right in the heart of downtown that is where you want to stay. Not to forget the fast complimentary Internet. Even though we stayed long in this lovely hotel, we would have loved to stay longer ;) Definitely, we will come back again! Thank you

Great room with historic features and modern comforts. Important to me was power outlet by the comfortable bed and fast complimentary Internet. Very friendly and helpful staff made the stay pleasant. On the downside there is no onsite spa and the bar and restaurant area always seemed a little deserted. However, the hotel is located close to many great restaurants and has deals with some local spas. A few small extras could make this hotel really amazing -- inclusive minibar, local calls, perhaps a happy hour, personal wifi hotspot, Bluetooth speaker/iPhone dock, maybe slippers and chocolates with the turndown. I would happily stay here again.
