My husband and I stayed at the Mt. Nevis Hotel for 10 nights over the Christmas and New Yearsâ€™ holidays. Overall, it was a nice hotel. Biggest proâ€™s were the gorgeous view and friendly staff. Biggest cons were the need for room maintenance and the often excruciatingly slow service in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. More detail below: Food/Restaurant service: We ate breakfast every morning at the hotel and we had dinner there three times. The meals were very good - some better than others - but certainly not the best we had on the island. The menu doesnâ€™t change, either (other than the nightâ€™s special), so thereâ€™s not a ton of variety. The biggest issue with the restaurant was the very, very slow service. I disagree with the reviewer who said itâ€™s just â€śisland timeâ€ť and you need to know this isnâ€™t as fast as McDonalds. I agree that expecting fast â€śfood serviceâ€ť would be unreasonable. That is not what Iâ€™m talking about here, or what the other reviewers are referring to. It often took 2 hours for breakfast and 2 for dinner; over an hour is just waiting for the food. (And when weâ€™re talking about a basic omelet or some pancakes, thereâ€™s just no reason for that.) It is frustrating because as visitors wanting to take advantage of the island, we wanted to eat and then get on with our day. We werenâ€™t looking for â€śfast food,â€ť but rather reasonable service. My impression was that this was a kitchen issue, not a wait staff issue. But we heard other guests complaining about the extremely slow service, and we definitely experienced it ourselves. Maintenance: For our first room, no one could find a working safe key. We brought some things with us that we wanted to lock up while we were out (including cash), and weâ€™d asked in advance if the rooms had a safe so we were expecting one. After they looked a few times for a key, they had us move rooms. The second room had a (very small) safe and a key, but there were maintenance issues. There were two phones - neither worked, and apparently they couldnâ€™t be fixed easily (so they just removed one and the other remained in the room). There was a leak in the sink that left water on the counter, and also ran down into a drawer and onto the floor next to the toilet â€” maintenance looked at it, and rolled up a towel on the floor against the wall so the water wouldnâ€™t spread too far into the bathroom. (I assume they fixed it after we left.) The hair dryer didnâ€™t work, so they did something to fix it, but it always smelled like it was burning and the plastic around the nozzle was warping and brown. Doors didnâ€™t open or close easily, either â€” it was a struggle opening/closing the patio door, and the front door and bathroom door rubbed a bit. Some of these are minor issues, obviously, but theyâ€™re easy to resolve with some upkeep. Laundry: We were told there was a facility for guest laundry, so we packed accordingly with less socks, etc. than weâ€™d otherwise need. Turns out, unlike other hotels weâ€™ve been to that have a washer and dryer guests can use (sometimes free, sometimes for a cost), this hotel didnâ€™t actually have that. Instead, you give your laundry to the hotel to do. Just something to be aware of if it matters to you. Toiletries: The hotel provides shampoo and a liquid soap in the shower in dispensers. They did not provide conditioner, bar soap, or lotion. (I asked about the conditioner, but not the others.) Itâ€™s easy to buy these items in a grocery store, but Iâ€™d have brought them myself if I knew in advance. Not a big deal, but just passing along the tip. The housekeeping staff was friendly, though, and when we needed more of something (tissues, for example), they were responsive. Patios off of Rooms: The ground floor rooms (which we stayed in) have sliding doors and patios, but most had no patio furniture. So, despite the pretty view and opportunity to be outside, with nothing to sit on, we never used the patio for anything other than a place to apply spray sunscreen. A shame - weâ€™d have loved to read out there from time to time. Staff: The staff here were very friendly and helpful. The wait staff in the restaurant were sweet, and most of the office staff were responsive and helpful. LaKeisha, in particular, was fantastic. She helped us before we arrived with setting up transportation and answering questions by email, and she was just as helpful throughout our trip. One day weâ€™d come back from being out on the island in our rental car. We parked the car and went to our room. About 10 minutes later, LaKeisha came knocking on our door to tell us we had a bad flat tire. Turns out, a grounds worker spotted it and told LaKeisha, who tried to call us in the room. As noted above, our room phone didnâ€™t work, so LaKeisha took it upon herself to come to our room and tell us in person. We were so grateful for her efforts, which really went above and beyond. Overall, the hotel was nice and we had a great time on the island. The staff were really nice and friendly. In our experiece, if the kitchen could just turn out food in a reasonable time, and with some basic upkeep/maintenance on the rooms, this could be a fantastic hotel. Instead, we thought it was a little average for an island hotel; the four stars are for the room rates, which were lower than many other hotels we looked at on Nevis.

A sign of a great vacation is when you can look back over 4 weeks ago and still remember it with a smile. If anyone wants a place to chill, go to Nevis and look no further for a place to stay than the Mt Nevis Hotel. First off, Nevis is beautiful and quiet. You wonâ€™t find any chain restaurants, big box stores, or large hotels on the island. Just you and the wild sheep, donkeys and monkeys that roam about everywhere. On the negative side, Nevis has only a few beaches for swimming and those wouldnâ€™t make the world best beaches list. Now, about Mt Nevis Hotel...this place was fantastic. The views of the Narrows looking over to St Kitts are great to wake up to everyday. The beds were extremely comfortable with soft bed linens and towels. We had breakfast everyday at the main lodge where we dined al fresco overlooking the narrows and the food was always fresh and delicious. The food was so good that we ate probably half of our dinners there as well (also ate at Sunshineâ€™s and yachtsmanâ€™s grill). We found the staff to be exemplary, especially Lakiesha at the front desk, Marion and Babita (wait staff) and the cleaning folks. They arranged for everything from car rental to water taxis. We like to travel to many different places, but we can definitely say that we would love to return to Mt Nevis Hotel.

Can't help but comment on the last review from a Michigan traveller who wrote "The staff was very friendly, but their English is very hard to understand and they are very slow in doing anything". My wife and I stayed here for a week last year (2017) and are again going back later this month, we enjoyed it so much. We instead found the staff very easy to understand--maybe it's because Canadians are more used to British-type accents and no one spoke to us in the St. Kitts/Nevis Creole patois that is admittedly difficult to understand if you are unfamiliar with it. I note that the hotel's owner (who lives in an adjoining villa and sometimes greets visitors at meals) is a former U.N. economist, and very well spoken indeed. As for staff being very slow in doing anything, we found that all requests made by us during our visit were instead satisfactorily addressed by staff in a reasonable timeline, albeit not as rapidly as in the States. Remember, though, this is Island time, and my wife and I (and many others, I suspect) come down to the Caribbean so often over the last 40 years for the very reason that it is such a great place to relax and chill out. Breakfast here may not be as fast as at McDonalds, but the food is so much better and the view across the Narrows to St. Kitts from the hotel restaurant's alfresco patio while meals are being prepared is simply superb!

We spent a few nights here while working at the Jade Clinic. The staff was very friendly, but their English is very hard to understand and they are very slow in doing anything. One morning we waited 2 hours to get breakfast! The views are magnificent and the rooms are very nicely appointed. The restaurant is over priced and very limited choices. We always needed more towels and whenever we called the front desk, no one ever answered. Staff is kind, but needs more training.

We had a great suite - plenty of room for three of us - with a spectacular view of St. Kitts and The Narrows at the horizon of a lush lawn and palms. Bed mattress and pillows were heavenly, and promoted deep sleep in the genuine quietude. Shower was adequate - bath toiletries minimal but housekeeping was efficient and reliable and the kitchen helpful. I could quibble about lack of coat hangers, robes, patio furniture, beach towels - but, ooops, I guess I did. Overall, however, Mount Nevis was "just the ticket" and we would definitely return. Breakfast choices were varied and always well prepared, though service, at times, could be excruciatingly slow. Dinner was always good and the atmosphere really pretty. All staff working at the Mount Nevis were genuinely personable and all tried to be helpful.
