Quaint, little estate with adorable cottages & plenty of charm. Attended for Dinner - which was delicious! Sweet, friendly dogs & cats greeted us upon arrival. Has an upscale, yet laid-back feel. Certainly a must-see if touring the Island.

My husband and I spent the most idyllic week staying at The Hermitage in Nevis. This delightful plantation inn is found on the hillside of the island with long views sweeping down to Charleston and the white sandy beaches. Our room was in one of the 'gingerbread' houses scattered through the grounds and meals taken in the open verandah dining area, in the evening the bar was a favourite gathering place before yet another delicious meal. Wednesday night's pig roast with an additional feast of local fishes and meat dishes accompanied by an endless selection of delicious vegetables was a night to remember. Our hosts, Richard and son Richie Lupinacci, made our stay memorable and we cannot thank them - and their excellent staff - enough. We will be back.

I can't speak to the rooms but the restaurant is lovely with veranda dining, a well-stocked bar, attentive service, and well-prepared food. The menu was surprisingly simple: a fish entree (Mahi Mahi, grilled with mashed green bananas, pumpkin and broccoli), a chicken entree, and eggplant parmigiana. No beef or lamb. Appetizers included grilled shrimp on a bean cake with a refreshing hint of lemon, and a caprese salad that was light on the cheese but with very flavorful tomatoes. Prices were moderate to expensive ($40 US for the fish). Wine list was small but had a few good choices. Recommended for those who want a pleasant upscale dining experience away from the 4 Seasons or other beachside plantation hotels.

The Hermitage Plantation Inn is superbly situated amongst palm trees and captures the sun from morning to sunset and is wafted by light breezes. The Gingerbread House accommodation is delightful with netted four-poster beds, private sea-view terrace with hammock and loungers, galley kitchen, drawing-room and well-equipped bathroom. We enjoyed a swim in the pool each day at 7.15am before breakfast at eight, which started with a buffet of juice, cereal, pineapple, water-melon and yoghurt followed by eggs, sunny, over, scrambled or omelette. Seemingly unlimited fresh coffee and tea by the pot. Room service is efficient with a smile and lunch and tea were sometimes enjoyed on our own verandah as a change from the main house. Dinner commences about seven after chatting with the other visitors in the bar, drawing-room or library. Guests were lively, mainly USofA, Canadians and Brits. Many people come to dine here from other locations on the island. Supper is served on the garden-view terrace with white linen and old English cutlery. The menu changes each night. Steaks are very good, lamb very tender, fish excellent. Wednesday night is BBQ night, so roast pork, chicken, rice, potatoes and copious amounts of fresh fruit. The wine list is pleasing. Good white burgundy chardonnay from Louis Latour, excellent Pinot Grigio and the Cotes du Rhone travels well. Up hill I guess the sunsets are viewed more easily; but we enjoyed overlooking the pasture with the horses, hens, monkeys and birdlife. A long lens is needed to photograph monkeys and humming-birds as they keep their distance. There are tennis courts and a swimming pool. Excellent for couples with their first baby. There were three such couples during our visit and they were delightful and quiet! Pool good for children as it is not too deep and an alternative to the sea-beaches which are great fun.

I only stayed for a single night (due to other travel commitments) so can't give a comprehensive review. Having said that, the owner very kindly accommodated my family for such a short stay and even provided a packed breakfast for our early departure. We were able to stay in the very lovely gatehouse, with traditional furnishing and the delightful sounds of nature at night. If you are spending most of your time at the beach in the Caribbean, this is a lovely option for giving you some time inland
