Historical and quiet location. Charming. We had dinner one evening and we truly felt like royalty with the attention of staff, food and historical ambiance. We were welcome to explore the building the restaurant is in, which is the oldest home (I believe) on the island. Dinner was out in the open air, but covered, veranda. Entertainment was provided by the donkey that wander through to snack on fruit under the mango tree.

We visited for dinner for the Wednesday Caribbean buffet. The house is very interesting and historic. There is no choice of starter or dessert - although both were good - but a decent choice for main course, including the signature whole roast pig. Very much a friendly family atmosphere. Good value for money. Well worth a visit.

We visited the Hermitage on our island tour and stayed for over an hour. The approach is winding and hilly, making the property somewhat private. The old plantation house is lovely and in wonderful condition, even containing period furnishings and china. The old cistern looks to be in good shape and all of the walkways and stone work are in good repair. Little cottages are situated around the property in a way that would allow you privacy. No air-conditioning or TV; as one reviewer said, this is the real Caribbean. There is only one place on the island that I know of where you can stay and actually access the beach without a car; I am not sure of the arrangements the Hermitage has, but they do have a nice little pool that is clean as a whistle. Probably my favorite part was the absolutely charming proprietress (she is actually their daughter-in-law) who operates the property. She was in the fashion industry in NYC prior to this assignment (can you imagine the difference in the two places?) and she has a lovely gift shop with island-made items which are actually affordable. I love gift shops and visited quite a few on the island and can say that hers is the best. It has art work, island garb, beautiful jewelry, and souvenirs, all tastefully merchandised in a tiny house with open windows and a breeze. I understand that the big draw is the roasted pig night, but since I don't indulge in pork, I had to decline. They have some sizeable lizards on the property, as well as wild monkeys and donkeys.

Attended the Caribbean night with a roast hog. Overall the food was good however the price per head for me was extreme working out at nearly Ā£60 for a soup starter, Hog roast with rice'n'peas, salad and some hot food along with a bread and butter rum pudding. This might sound like I'm very picky however based on the food we actually ate, and we could of had more this for me was way to over priced considering there was no entertainment which friends of mine said used to happen on this night. Staff were great but the poor mark is for price only.

If you are looking for beachside, air conditioned elegance then Hermitage is probably not for you. If however you are looking for a charming taste of the real Caribbean it might well be. The accommodation is scattered around the beautiful grounds on this delightful little island. We stayed in Goosepen Cottage which is quirky and comfortable. The food in the on site restaurant is excellent, with perhaps the proviso that the fresh fruit and buffet options at breakfast where limited. If you are staying on the Island don't miss the Wednesday evening hog roast. The spit was directly outside Goosepen and the smell drove us mad all day (in a good way!). Certain aspects of the hotel were a bit tired, for example the shower in our cottage is well overdue an update and we thought the pool area needed attention due to missing tiles and crumbling cement around the pool edge. However it is a little gem and the staff are delightful. Thank you everyone for making our holiday so restful, with the exception of the jumpy that is!!
