Montpelier Plantation & Beach in Nevis, Saint Kitts and Nevis

Poised above the Caribbean Sea in the lush hills of Nevis, Montpelier Plantation & Beach is a breathtaking sanctuary far removed from the stresses of modern life. This beautiful 60-acre estate, a Relais & Chateaux property, has been meticulously restored in keeping with its heritage of elegance and style. Classic island cuisine tantalizes your tastes, while spacious guest rooms feature tranquil vistas of the hills and sea. Service is personable and discreet, and the options for recreation and quiet time are seemingly endless.

Nevis, a secluded volcanic island awash in laid back charm, promises the perfect balance of relaxation and activity. At the center of Nevis stands the spectacular cloud-fringed Nevis Peak, a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. The atmosphere is an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant greenery. Most of the former plantation fields have given way to this tropical vegetation, though a small portion of land is still farmed for sugar that is used in the kitchens of Montpelier. Read a good book as you lounge on the private beach, or treat yourself to a massage, yoga or game of tennis. Golf nearby or join an island ecologist on hikes through the island's tropical rain forests and deserted sugar plantations.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff is warm and friendly. The grounds are beautiful. The pool is gorgeous. The food is delicious. Our cabana room was very comfortable. We spent a day at their private beach which is well appointed with a bar and cabanas. They had BBQ on the beach the day we went. Really could not have enjoyed it more.

The preceding reviews capture what is special about the Montpelier Inn - nestling in beautiful grounds set on the Nevisian hillside. The beach too, is lovely - private, quiet and natural. The charm of the place is centred around the fact it is unsophisticated vs large resort hotels, and is peaceful and unspoilt. Some tips if you’re thinking about staying: - the rooms are fine but (tbh) on the basic side. The beds are comfortable but ours was very creaky (to the extent the creaking springs wake you up) and had no headboard; the gowns are a bit grey; some of the room fittings are ”dated”. Part of the charm, but.... - We stayed half board as having read other reviews we understood the hotel is relatively isolated in its location. This turned out to not be a good decision: true we avoided expensive taxi fares to other eateries but overall the food was disappointing. The main issue being that the menu in “750” was limited and repetitive (2 specials a night - of which one is pasta - ring the changes to a degree, otherwise the menu was the same). The food in 750 is nice enough for all that (home made bread, a stunning lamb with feta dish, amazing ice creams and sorbets) but it is not the high level gourmet dining per the website. Other guests commented that the food was better last year. - We were disappointed to learn the half board option included a “Caribbean Buffet” on Sunday: not being a fan of hotel buffets and this proved why. The food was a really disappointing standard, “slop on rice” is perhaps harsh, but nevertheless an accurate description of the dishes kept warm in those metal bains marie - long on quantity, short on quality. None of the other dining options was available so we had no choice but to join the buffet. The low point of our week at Montpelier. - the Monday night beach BBQ was great fun - it comes at a price so for once we were glad of the half board option - the beach looked stunning: oil lamps lit on the sand as the sun set, and excellent live music from Gharlic - all ages were dancing on the beach as he jammed and it was a jolly and relaxed evening. - The hotel arranges trips: everything is charged with 5% "credit card" surcharge. The trips are expensive to begin with: $40 for a hike to see the waterfalls / go up the peak, plus taxi fare. You’re told you need a guide but tbh you don’t. Based on the hike we did (waterfalls) it wasn’t worth the price for a 2.5 hour walk to see some water coming down the hillside (maybe it’s more spectacular after the rainy season). - Take USD$ (not XEC) as everything is charged in US - and - the Inn charges 24% on all food / drink charges. - Getting to Montpelier from St Kitts airport cost us $70 / each, each way, using the water taxi; other guests had free transfers in their package so check this (negotiate!) before booking. - During our stay a family showed up with 2 young children - the younger one was no older than 5, and was very noisy and whiney. The hotel expressly states they do not cater for under 6s (per their in-room Guest Info) and asks parents to ensure other guests are not disturbed by their kids. The fact is, kids splashing and yelling in the pool / on the beach and around the hotel grounds, and running unsupervised in the restaurant during meal service does disturb other guests. Not the kids’ fault but..... the “quiet and peaceful setting” was certainly disturbed throughout the time these kids stayed. Staff were never going to intervene: bad luck for everyone else. - And -- check your bill. Ours was wrong, and we had already been advised by other guests who had stayed before to check it... glad we did. - The checkout experience wasn't great: we requested a late check out (3pm dep for the BA flight) and were told we could keep the room through 1.30pm. When we called for our bags to be collected we were told we could keep the room through 3pm... just as well as the hotel had private functions going on in the main public areas meaning these were off-limits to residents. All the above should be taken in the context of a nice hotel, with lovely staff who are friendly, polite, gentle and keen to make sure you have a great holiday. The Inn offers very generous Managers’ Cocktails on Thursday evening as well as a welcome rum punch on arrival, beautiful flowers in your room and complementary afternoon tea at the pool . The cocktails are first class and taste even better at the beach bar. The Beach BBQ was a really fun evening. Make sure you visit Passions Bar for lunch during your stay (5 minute walk). The Montpelier has plenty of return visitors so they are getting lots right but I can’t help feeling the Plantation experience is overpriced for what you get. Nice place, but not vfm...

We have just arrived home from this wonderful place. The grounds are beautiful, the cuisine is excellent. The best staff anywhere I have stayed. Breakfast served by Leslie, Venetta Valerie and the others was a joy. They are so cheerful, they brighten your day. The reception team were great, making everything easy for us, from arranging taxis to booking tables at restaurants. Kaddy and Kamwraun at the pool bar really looked after us and we had a lot of laughs. The private beach was perfect, so tranquil. Thanks Helen and your team, for giving us such a memorable holiday. from Roger and Patsy

This was my second visit to Nevis within a year. Montpelier was a fabulous choice. Location was beautiful, peaceful, and lush. Jackie was so helpful with and huge smile. Kaddy the best and friendliest bar person ever always with a friendly hello, smile and great service. Also, I must give a shout out to (Jr.) he also was great. Tish and the rest of the staff were the best. Everyone made me feel so welcomed. Botanical garden a short walk, Well worth it. We met the most amazing people from all over. Good friendships begin. Monkeys and wild donkeys everywhere. Great fun. Suggestion: would like the shuttle to the beach be earlier than 10:30 am and the managers cocktail party would be fabulous over looking the tennis courts which has a great sunset view. Enjoy your trip. Will return.
