Montpelier Plantation & Beach in Nevis, Saint Kitts and Nevis

Poised above the Caribbean Sea in the lush hills of Nevis, Montpelier Plantation & Beach is a breathtaking sanctuary far removed from the stresses of modern life. This beautiful 60-acre estate, a Relais & Chateaux property, has been meticulously restored in keeping with its heritage of elegance and style. Classic island cuisine tantalizes your tastes, while spacious guest rooms feature tranquil vistas of the hills and sea. Service is personable and discreet, and the options for recreation and quiet time are seemingly endless.

Nevis, a secluded volcanic island awash in laid back charm, promises the perfect balance of relaxation and activity. At the center of Nevis stands the spectacular cloud-fringed Nevis Peak, a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. The atmosphere is an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant greenery. Most of the former plantation fields have given way to this tropical vegetation, though a small portion of land is still farmed for sugar that is used in the kitchens of Montpelier. Read a good book as you lounge on the private beach, or treat yourself to a massage, yoga or game of tennis. Golf nearby or join an island ecologist on hikes through the island's tropical rain forests and deserted sugar plantations.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Montpelier, and the whole experience was awesome! We received a room with a king -size bed with lots of privacy. The bed was very comfortable, clean and nice. The bathroom has a tub, was very clean. Overall the room was very nice. We also visited the beach....which is in Cotton Ground LOL! We enjoyed the privacy of the huts and the beach is well kept and very quiet. We also got a picnic basket to take with us. The breakfast was amazing, I loved the blueberry pancakes and the bacon and eggs and selection of fruits! We also had dinner on a Sunday night (which was buffet style that night). We enjoyed the live steel-pan music and the food. Kudos to the chef...the fillet fish was amazing, very flavourful. Overall, we enjoyed our honeymoon and will certainly be back!

If I asked you 'What do you get when you combine the very best of Britain with the very best of the US' what might you reply? Maybe 'one of the greatest wartime leaders in modern history - Winston Churchill'? Or, 'a glamourous royal flush - Harry and Meghan'? If you asked me, I would reply 'Montpelier Plantation Inn, Nevis'. Montpelier is the product of many acts of genius. The first was James Milnes Gaskill's, when, back in the 1960s, he created a quintessentially British hideaway in the paradise that is Nevis. James, together with his spectacularly wonderful wife Celia, ran the hotel for over 30 years. With just over 20 spacious and comfortable bungalows, glorious grounds, a truly unique freshwater pool and a private beach some 20 minutes away, Montpelier became THE place for a certain sort of British person to enjoy a winter break in a secluded, understated and hugely spoiling environment that redefined the meaning of the word 'relaxation'. When James and Celia decided to retire in the early 2000s they sold Montpelier to an American couple, Lincoln and Muffin Hoffman. To be honest, many of us were worried - could Montpelier ever be as good without James and Celia? Well, we were wrong to worry. The second act of genius has been Muffin's (Lincoln very sadly and tragically died just a few years after arriving at the hotel). Muffin's genius has been to keep everything that was wonderful about Montpelier in tact, and to upgrade, refurbish or change the aspects that needed a bit of a spruce up. The result is one of the finest hotels in the world - an accolade Montpelier has won in the past and certainly deserves to keep. James, Celia and Muffin aside for a moment, the many other acts of genius happen everyday at Montpelier when the genuinely incomparable staff look after guests' every desire and wish. Many of the team have been there for 20 or 30 years and have maintained the discreet but very effective 'house party' style of service that James and Celia created. It is tempting to name some of the staff, the breakfast team and the day and evening bar and restaurant staff in particular, but that would be unfair as the Montpelier experience is a genuine team effort and every member of the team's contribution is appreciated hugely. It is probably worth saying that a major part of what makes Montpelier so special is that it is on an island that is relatively undeveloped and has avoided the flashiness of some other West Indian islands. So, occasionally the hot water might be a bit cold, the power might go down for a short while or the restaurant service might be occasionally as 'relaxed' as the overall atmosphere. If that is likely to bother you, I suggest you stick to Barbados or St Lucia. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I first visited Montpelier in 1991 and I am delighted to say the I felt exactly the same again in 2018. That is something truly exceptional and I am more than happy to recommend it to anyone who thinks they would appreciate the best that Britain and the US can collectively produce.

This hotel gets better every visit. We thought the food was great last time however with the new Greek chef the food is on another level. Another great new addition is Helen the manager who combines charm and wit with efficiency. This hotel is great if you like walks and a slightly cooler day time temperature (due to its height above sea level).

We had a truly wonderful experience at Montpelier for our 12-day honeymoon. Montpelier is beautiful, charming and the food and wine is top notch. We had the chance to get to know the lovely staff and we adore them! By the time we left, we felt like part of the family. We stayed in a plantation room and were very happy with our accommodations. The entire property is incredibly manicured and well kept. We enjoyed breakfast every morning on the terrace with a view of the sugar mill and Nevis Peak. It was easy to arrange taxi rides and activities through the concierge services and we appreciate how helpful and caring everyone was in making sure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. We loved arriving in the Great Room for cocktail hour and having a chance to look over the menu before sitting down - it felt like such a personal experience every time. Dinner in the mill is a must-do - the seven course meal was phenomenal! We also recommend taking a cooking class with the Executive Chef - we had a wonderful time spending the morning with him - his creations are beautiful! We cannot wait to go back to Montpelier, we plan to make it a regular trip to celebrate anniversaries. Thank you, Montpelier!
