About the Hotel

New Orleanians Rodney and Frances Smith spent years traveling the world for business and for pleasure. Always in search of the perfect small luxury hotel, until 1982, when they acquire a group of adjoining early 19th century French Quarter homes, and created Soniat House. Offering 31 accommodations, in six categories, each room and suite has been individually furnished and decorated without duplication. What they all have in common are the French and English antiques personally collected by the Smiths, artwork from the Smith’s collection, designer fabrics and wallpapers, and a rare palette of custom colors.

Charming boutique hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed November 22, 2020

Stayed 4 nights here with my husband in November 2020... I got the recommendation from Andrew Harper. It was such a wonderful experience.. feel like home..charming townhouse.. great location with walking distance to everywhere.. staff is friendly, attentive and helpful... the manager got us upgraded to suite #16 is facing the garden. We requested breakfast in the garden and It was just fabulous. The bed is clean and comfortable, the bathroom updated and clean. The place is so unique and has NoLa vibes. They handle well for Covid 19 pandemic with mask and everything. we even got an option to do non contact express check out. I would go back to stay in this charming house again.

Fantastic stay

We have just finished a 5 night stay at the Soniat & loved it. Beautiful buildings at the quieter end of Chatres street, warm, friendly staff, fabulous suite with stunning verandah and delicious home baked breakfasts. Honesty bar and no “big” hotel amenities but we wanted a more authentic stay. We would thoroughly recommend it.

We fell in love with Soniat House last year and booked to return the same time this year, early February. It felt like coming home, if one's home happened to be three gorgeous early 19th century townhouses on the quiet end of Chartres Street with lush courtyards and extraordinarily nice people-yes you Ervon, Jill, Terence, Cornell and Rick. We wanted the same room, which opoened onto the courtyard where we had breakfast with their baked to order buttermilk biscuits when we didn't head out for Cafe du Monde beignets. All the niceties like luxurious Frette sheets and Moulton Brown toilettries. Sitting on the second floor front veranda watching the world go by on the quiet street below is as good as it gets. Thank you Soniat House. See You next year.

BEWARE

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed February 26, 2020

Soniat House is not a suitable place to stay. I was initially attracted to the history of the hotel, but was disappointed when I arrived. Soniat House is VERY small. The TV is less than 19 inches. You can hear other guests clearly talking and walking around ALL night. Also PLEASE beware. There is a cat belonging to the hotel that roams freely. My friend is deathly afraid of cats, and as a result, we had to leave the hotel. The Soniat House tried to offer us another room, but the cat roams the common areas. My friend did not feel comfortable. The most disappointing part is that after we had to leave and spend A LOT of money on another room, they refused to refund ANY parts of the payment. I thought it was in bad taste to keep $1000 knowing that the reason we had to leave is because of the fact that Soniat House doesn’t tell guests up front that there’s a cat roaming freely. I like rustic, vintage hotels a great deal :) But Soniat House is NOT worth $300 a night. Don’t do it. Also, the breakfast of two biscuits and orange juice is presented as complimentary, but it’s actually twelve dollars. Much nicer places to stay in New Orleans. Don’t do it.

French quarter ambience

Cnveninently located on Chartres next to the Ursuline Convent. Other plusses were outstanding service...the staff could nothave been more gracious and helpful. Old wworld charm. Continental Breakfast served in the courtyard or room is a plus. Downside: the room needs updating. Very dark. Older furniture but not of best quality. Bathroom is nice and has been updated. Could hear noise from room above., and the shower running from upstairs. Pricey for what it was.
