About the Hotel

AKA Tribeca re-imagines what it’s like to live the New York dream. You know the one: A spacious mid-century townhouse tucked into an impossibly cool downtown street, with a living room that draws a horde of creative friends. The public spaces at the AKA Tribeca are intimate and inviting, redesigned in 2014 by SoHo firm Gachot Studios. Fireplaces, white oak floors and a library stocked with art books invite lingering, while the bar and restaurant are both destinations of their own. James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Carmellini’s restaurant is hyper-local, with a seasonal menu forged from longstanding relationships with farmers and producers. Cocktails at Evening Bar are equally artisanal, concocted by the mixologist behind the city’s great speakeasies.

Clean, well located, and friendly staff

We enjoyed our weekend at at the Smyth Tribeca. Clean well maintained rooms at a fair price in a great location. Friendly and accommodating staff. Terrific bar attached to the lobby too.

Substandard housekeeping and grubby suite

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed in a suite for four nights (Room 803). The hotel is in a great location for Soho, and very quiet despite being right next to a subway - 3 stops on the express train and you are in Times Square. That there is where the positives end, unfortunately. Because this hotel has some exceedingly shabby rooms which it is willing to sell for in excess of $600 per night excluding breakfast. The room and the bathroom were very grubby and in desperate need of a deep clean. The carpet was stained. There was dust everywhere. Dust so thick that in places I could write my name in it. On the wall by the bed it looked like someone had been sick and the spatter had not been cleared up. There was a wrapper under a cabinet which was there when we arrived and still there when we left four days later. The carpet had not seen a thorough vacuum for a while. I stepped on a sewing needle on the last morning, and injured my toe. The suite had a bed (comfortable but dusty) and a sofa bed (ouch!) which needs to be condemned. Quite dreadful. You don’t need to sleep in this bed to know it’s bad, you just need to sit on the edge to hear and feel the broken springs. My back is still paying the price. The bathroom was also not clean. At skirting board level there was a lot of grime around the shower, and more dust. Lots of dust. And, again, spatter on the walls. The toiletries and amenities were replaced once in four days, and then only when we requested it. Apparently we can share one shower cap between two? The housekeeping was substandard. Dirty towels were not removed and coffee cups were not cleaned. These things are easily missed once. But after 4 days we still waited. No slippers were provided until requested. At this price point I am shocked that this hotel would be willing to let guests stay in this room. Actually, at any price point I do think a certain level of hygiene should be provided. When I checked out, I suggested the room should be taken out of commission and deep cleaned. We were comped a breakfast and some mini bar items which was a nice gesture, but which amounted to about 3% of the total bill. We did not get an apology. I have photos but unfortunately the app won’t allow me to upload them.

A dream getaway!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My husband and I just had the most incredible weekend at the Smyth! From arrival to departure, it was a 5 star stay. The front desk was super friendly, offering us champagne at check in (they have complimentary 24/7 champagne service!) and immediately getting us into our room which was immaculately clean and well-appointed with everything we needed throughout our stay including cozy robes and slippers. Staying in the spacious corner suite was a real treat- we had incredible views and enjoyed lounging outside for coffee in the morning and cocktails at night! We both slept great as the bed and pillows were luxuriously comfortable and the room was very quiet (which is not always the case in NYC). We were celebrating our anniversary and the thoughtful manager, Pere, went above and beyond to make our stay extra special. The entire staff was top notch. We enjoyed the food and cocktails from Smyth Tavern (definitely try the crispy rice tuna and deviled eggs with caviar!) and the ambience and service were superb. The location of the Smyth is also perfect- we enjoyed walking around the neighborhood and the subway is right outside when we needed to go further. We were sad to leave and can't wait to go back- thank you Smyth for a wonderful anniversary celebration!!
