I can’t afford to stay at The Surrey anymore. Not because I can’t afford the price (although it is much higher than others with the same features) but due to my interest in being more discerning with quality and service in that price point. We’ve stayed here before and we’ve also arranged for our out of town visitors to be put up at this hotel. This was due to the overall quality and meticulous detail the staff provided. No more. Perhaps they are taking a vacation from the extra ordinary after a few awards I don’t know but let’s be real here - often hotels in New York City are decorating to hide the age and flaws of the building. We are more forgiving with street noise, or knocking pipes, slow elevators when top notch design and excellent service overcome typical New York City building obstacles. This hotel is renovated with some interesting features in the rooms from nicely tiled bathrooms, good lighting, fluffy sheets and a window pillow with a saying on it. But it’s always been the meticulous nature of the staff that has differentiated them from any other boutique hotel with the same qualities. Normally this hotel has staff who go above and beyond, even if you choose to rarely see them they will ensure a personalized stay with their subtle meticulous customer service. Not this time. The issues we encountered were subtle but the difference between an ordinary hotel and an extraordinary one. Here are the issues we encountered: When I booked online it only showed 1 Guest. I contacted the Concierge to share I wanted both names on the account, that we are returning guests and it’s our 19th anniversary. They responded to acknowledge this. None of this information made it to any staff. I didn’t realize we arrived 40 minutes prior to regular check in until they told me they’d try to find us a room to accommodate being early. They asked if I wanted my visitor to be added to my room. The front desk staff seemed distracted and the service was far from personalized. At no time did they acknowledge our anniversary. Normally we are used to a small recognition, verbal congrats, chocolates on the pillow, a small written note, something to surprise and delight. Even a thank you for being returning guests. No turn down service. Previous guests long hair on the bathroom floor. It remained there throughout our stay. Previous guests nose mucous was stuck on our bed quilt. Our tv movie feature pixelated and we couldn’t watch the movies we ordered. The confusion with front desk and maintenance had this be a fiasco instead of a simple fix. Staff need to understand these may seem small but when guests prepare for bed, snuggle in and get ready to watch - and it doesn’t work, how you choose to respond becomes paramount. Besides the repair request being lost along the way and them not getting a proper note on what needed to be repaired when we left the room for them to do so, we contacted them again and decided to give up the next night as it would require them taking the TV out and replacing. Regardless we had a knock on the door our last night at 10:10 pm when we were sleeping to come to repair the item. We turned them away. Point people on the phone were inconsistent in being polite and accommodating (normally in higher end places they will say your name, or be personal in some manner) instead borderline rude, a good example is when I called back to follow up with the TV not five minutes later and the woman annoyed I thought she was the same person I spoke to before. Fridge was not refilled with items. We requested room service and we were very thirsty and requested a pitcher of water and they told us instead of a pitcher they offer complimentary bottled water. Two very small bottled waters arrived which was comical after that exchange. Of course these things alone don’t make a bad experience. But accumulate them, add in the high price point that stops seeming justified and it just becomes one of many hotel choices in the city. We returned here out of loyalty and brand recognition. Neither existed this stay. There is nothing distinct or special about this hotel anymore. We left feeling slighted by the experience. This is not the hotel we remember. The location to the park and museums is excellent.

I have stayed at the Surrey a number of times and for the most part, had enjoyed my previous visits. However, on my most recent visit, the overall level of service was very disappointing. From the time I checked in, with only one receptionist at the front desk at mid-day with people checking in and checking out, to the delay in room service, poor quality of housekeeping, I will not be coming back to the Surrey for a while. There are too many other fine hotels in New York to choose from that provide a more consistent level of service.

Each time we stay at The Surrey, we love this place even more... I am a Jazz aficionado, and find that Surrey's Friday Jazz Night in The Bar Pleiades makes for mellow, relaxing chitchatting over wine and cocktails with both old, and newly found friends, as we spin up prior to launching off for some serious "Night Steaming." As I said before, for me, my signature cocktail when in Manhattan is the "Manhattan"... with an extra Maraschino Cherry.

The staff is welcoming and friendly, and eager to help. The rooms are not big, but perfectly cozy (just enough space) and seem to be individually designed and accented. We have been a couple of times and the rooms have been very different. The restaurant downstairs is excellent, the bar makes a great sazerac, and the rooftop lounge is just great. We had a wonderful time here (twice!)

Reserved a 2 bed studio suite with a friend while we were in town for the US Open. From the plush and elegant decor, to the sumptuous in room dining, we indulged in almost every luxury the hotel had to offer, including the exclusive rooftop garden and view of Upper East Side Manhattan. We were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by Jessica at the Front Desk, and Mr. Anthony Adamo made a special effort to introduce himself and offer his business card, a professional gesture long forgotten by large, corporate brands but utterly refreshing in an independent luxury boutique hotel. We were immediately impressed. Our studio suite was every bit the luxury retreat we daydreamed about for weeks in anticipation of our stay, and we enjoyed hours of conversation as we sank into the plush arm chairs next to the fireplace and sipped on the lovely champagne that was waiting for us upon arrival. I must call out Pablo from the bell desk who helped us with our luggage and provided a fantastic overview of our suite and amenities, greeting us both professionally and with the warmth of a host welcoming old friends. Pablo delivered on the promise we expected from NYC's top rated hotel. We have stayed at quite a few 5 star hotels in NYC, and across the US, and we were delighted by the exceptional service Pablo, Jessica, and the rest of the staff provided during our stay. Superlative, welcoming, and never pretentious.
