The Towers at Lotte New York Palace in New York City, New York

The Towers at The New York Palace is a Madison Avenue institution. Built by a well-known railroad financier in 1882, the private mansion was modeled after the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome. It became The Helmsley Palace Hotel, later run by infamous Leona Helmsley and purchased by the Sultan of Brunei. A 2013 renovation melded modern touches into classically styled rooms, many of which have views of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Manhattan skyline. Residential-style Tower Suites are a favorite among well-heeled travelers and celeb sightings are frequent, especially when Gossip Girl films here several days each month.

Order a grand breakfast to be delivered to your suite as you watch the sun rise over the East River. Call on the house car, a Mercedes GL350 or a Maybach, to chauffeur you to shopping destinations across Midtown. Retire to Trouble’s Trust, a swanky bar with red lacquer walls under the lobby’s grand staircase, and sip a “Queen of Mean” cocktail, a cheeky homage to Leona Helmsley and her dog, Trouble.

My best friend and I travelled to New York recently for a concert and needed to find a hotel for the weekend. I normally conduct copious amounts of research before I settle on a hotel but boy was I duped by this place. Unfortunately, we decided to book our weekend at the Towers at Lotte, and we really ended up regretting out choice. We can't always afford to stay at a "luxury" hotel but when we are fortunate enough to, we expect an experience that is commiserate with what the cost. I don't even know where to start with this review really. Yes the rooms in the Towers may have been updated recently, but I don't understand why they were so tired, dirty, dusty, and worn out. It felt like they were updated in the early 2000's. There was a thick layer of dust behind the dresser and bedside tables as well as around the bed and on the lamp shades. The bulb in one of the lamps was out so that corner of the room remained in the dark, there was a wall corner where the chair rubbed because the table in the room was too big (see picture), and there was fecal matter on the toilet. Yes, you read that correctly. It was on the toilet seat and I used my Clorox wipes to clean the toilet before we could use it. I went ahead and then cleaned the sink and mirrors as well because there was hair on them. Why?! I could be mistaken, but I thought this was a luxury hotel. We arrived very late (after midnight) on our arrival day/night, and we were steered towards the general check in counter because the Towers check in was closed. The check in clerk was tired I suppose because he just went through the quick motions of asking for a credit card, giving us our room keys, and then sending us on our way. The entire process took less than 3 minutes. We were not informed of any of the added advantages of staying in the Towers unfortunately and this was our first stay, so it would have been beneficial. Also, we were celebrating 27 years of friendship that weekend and I had informed them of it when I made the reservations. At other hotels, when I have visited during a special occasion, I have had things such as flowers, fruit, chocolates, cupcakes, and even champagne at one hotel, delivered to the room as a token of congratulations from the hotel. Nothing here. Not even an acknowledgement. I suggest management train their employees on both Lotte and Towers check in so guests feel they receive all the information they should have when checking in, regardless of where they check in. We stayed a total of three nights and each day, we asked twice if we could use one of the house cars. All seven times, we were told that they were on hold for other guests. We had read online that that the cars were on a first come first serve basis but perhaps there was some other type of special arrangement you have to make, to which we were not privy, having missed the Towers check in process. Every time we left the hotel, we noticed that the cars were sitting idly...while we had to wait for a cab. Even one of the Lotte staff who was outside asked us if we wanted to use the car because no one was using it and then someone else came and told him that it was for the use of other guests. We are young travelers and sometimes we are not treated with as much respect as older travelers because of people's prejudices but this was just ridiculous. We never were able to line up the house car during the trip unfortunately. Another item we had issue with was that our room was only turned down once while we were there and it was only made up once as well. We had the privacy button turned off so that the room would be serviced, but it made no difference. The housekeeping staff were friendly when we saw them in the hallway but we didn't understand why no one was making up the room. We inquired at the from desk and that was the only time the room was made up. Something we found to be interesting was that when our room door was closed, there was a horrible wailing sound coming through, so loud in fact that we couldn't ignore it. We figured out that the gap under the door, which is normally left for air circulation, was causing the air that was out in the hallway to be compressed as it was entering our room. In effect, it was like someone blowing a harmonica...all the time. We used our extra pillows to block the gap under the door so we could sleep. All three nights. Oh, and let me not forget that we specifically had requested a feather free room. Guess what? When we arrived, there were two sleeping pillows that were feather free, four sleeping pillows that had feathers, and then the decorative pillows all had feathers. This was so frustrating as it was past midnight when we arrived, we were exhausted, and we had to call down and ask for the pillows to be removed from our room. The employee who came to take the pillows looked like she was angry at us for asking for the pillows to be removed. I was afraid to ask her for anything else. We eventually did have to ask for another roll of toilet paper the second day we were there because the room hadn't been serviced and the roll they had left for us on our first night was low. To make a bad stay worse, on our last day, we called down to have the porter come up for our bags. We were told it would be us shortly. We waited 30 minutes and then called back down and were told that they accidently wrote down the wrong room number that the call came from, they couldn't remember who it was, so they figured we would call back. That is unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable. We waited another 10 minutes for the porter so, yes a total of 40 minutes to have someone help us with our bags. When we got down to the lobby, as we were walking out, one of the employees said, "Sorry, again, I just didn't know who called so I couldn't call you back". How is that ok in this day of caller ID and technology? We will not be staying at this hotel again. The hotel was not worth the money whatsoever. We didn't have time or else I would have spoken with the manager during our stay. Sometimes hotels will offer you credit towards another stay if your experience was poor in an effort to make things right, but with all of the other choices in the city, this was our first and last try with the Towers and with Lotte. I hope this review is useful to anyone reading it. Perhaps other have had a good experience, but it's a gamble. Are you willing to take the chance with your hard earned money?

We celebrated my son's University graduation with a trip to the Big Apple for 4 nights with my son, daughter, husband & parents! I have not gone on a "real trip" with my parents in over a decade so I had to make sure it would be the most memorable experience for everyone! I read all the reviews & did all my research for months & bet on my stay at the Towers to be perfect! Although there were some delays & confusion during checking in, Susan at Reception did her best to solve the issues & calmed our nerves. The rooms were very spacious & immaculately clean. The best was the fragrance in the bathroom because most hotel bathrooms don't smell pleasant but our room had an elegant smell that was very classy! The best part of the stay was made seamless with The Page, Clara Law's attentive & most professional service & dedication to our whole family. Her extra mile help to our every need ensured we got the most out of the hotel & NYC. And she has the same name as me so it's good karma that I picked the right hotel😃😃 I must say that The Towers at Lotte New York deserves a Summa Cum Laude for hotel hospitality & I wouldn't even blink twice to visit again & I highly recommend travelers looking for special dedicated services to stay at The Towrers❤❤❤

This was our first stay at the Palace, and I don't know how I will ever be able to go back to NYC and stay anywhere else. The room in the Towers and view was absolutely beautiful, we actually were enjoying hanging out in the room as opposed to sight-seeing! The bed was so comfortable. I loved all of the "smart controls" so I could turn on/off lights, raise/close the blinds and sheers from laying in bed! The finishes in the room were the nicest I have ever seen - the solid wood trim, the chandlers, the marble...felt like a mini "palace" within The Palace! We felt like royalty staying here! The staff was all super friendly and helpful as of my best "hotel experiences" to date! It was the perfect escape (we have a 4 year old we left at home!) for young parents! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

If it were not for Clara, our experience at the Towers would not have been so splendid! From check-in till the day of departure, she fulfilled all of our very specific requests (including a later check out time due to a 9-hour flight delay), and even went above and beyond (providing us with complimentary goods; helping us with some purchases; attending to our errands for us). Clara is a true asset to the hotel, and we hope that customers will have the privilege to experience her hospitality!
