My trip to NYC was off to a bad start. The hotel I booked was nothing like the pictures. I happened upon Gansevoort and met Matthew Stewart. Understanding what I had just been through he offered to show me the room prior to me booking. The room was awesome, but more importantly Matthew’s care and attention really helped cheer me up and save my trip. The vibe of the hotel is great, the staff is top notch, location is awesome (right by SoHo House, Catch, STK, Apple ...) and the pricing is very fair. This is my go to NYC hotel from now on.

We stayed here for 6 nights and particularly selected this hotel for a couple of reasons: we wanted to stay in the Meatpacking District, in a hotel with a rooftop swimming pool. Upon arrival, we found out the hotel is surrounded by scaffolding. In the lobby, it was crowded with large groups of people screaming and shouting in the lobby and adjacent bars. The music was even louder. After checking into our room, we wanted to check out the pool only to find ourselves in the middle of an enormous crowd of drunken teens. We quickly fled back to the elevator where queues of teens all wanted to take the same elevator car. Some were aggressive and on our way down, throwing beer at each other. I don’t understand the hotel and its staff to allow this to happen. Also upstairs, it became clear that renovations were going on which meant the rooftop bar was going to be closed. My wife wanted to swim at some stage and initially different staff gave confusing messages whether also the pool was closed or not. In the end, she could go to the pool by the service elevator. The room was as advertised, cleaning was okay and the location of the hotel is perfect. The mini bar contains a vast albeit very expensive assortment of drinks, snacks and accessoires including 😜 (never saw this as an experienced traveller) a couples’ erotic kit including condoms: this all of a sudden explained the experience upon arrival... 🕺🏿 Anyway, as we paid over $300 per night while the renovations were not advertised, and providing the concept of this hotel including giving access to non hotel guests, we would not return to this hotel next time in Meatpacking. Arrived a bit Leary as they were doing construction on the street in front of hotel but was so pleased to find an amazing staff and pristinely kept hotel. Room was spacious and very well kept. We were pleasantly surprised to find the front desk help us ship a package back home. If you need help ask for Michael. The roof view from the bar is well worth a trip upstairs. The concierge was ready to help with anything. Can’t say enough good for them.

Renovations were taking place outside the hotel and to the rooftop pool and bar area. Consequently we were unable to use the rooftop facilities during our stay (and were not pre advised of these renovations). Worse however was the fact that the hotel is tired and dated. So much so that on our second night, when turning off one of the light switches in the room, the switch actually exploded causing me to receive minor burns and an electric shock, rendering pins and needles in my arm for around 45 mins thereafter. When we reported the incident to the hotel, the initial response was incredibly blasé. I was offered a band aid and told that the service manager would be with us within 10 mins to fix the bulb (clearly the lady taking the call on the front desk hadn’t listened to us or understood the problem). After 25 mins the service manager arrived at the room, saw the light switch had been destroyed in the explosion and the burns on my hand and immediately went into damage control mode. Credit to him for reading between the lines as we were immediately moved to an upgraded room and within 2 mins 5 staff (including the duty manager descended on our room - concerned I’m sure about litigation). I did feel however that the primary intent of the staff was to get me to actually say I was OK, rather than to make sure I was OK. I’m relieved to say that there were no lasting after affects of the shock, however, the hotel were extremely lucky that I’m fit and in good health as an elderly guest could have been in serious trouble given the shock and explosion. 24 hours later the hotel management left us a note and a fruit platter in the room, but the matter was handled appallingly initially, and despite our upgrade, more could have been done.

Best location. Great decor. So close to the high line, Chelsea market and the beautiful buddakhan restaurant which is by far the most beautiful restaurant in New York (to my knowledge) Roof top pool is definitely a must especially during summer months
