We chose The James this time for its location near a family member, and were pleasantly surprised at how "at home" we felt there. From the doorman and desk staff to the afternoon wine and cheese (and morning coffee and muffin) it had a friendly and relaxed vibe. We stayed twice, in a queen room, but on different levels. The room on the higher floor was in much better condition than the other room on the 2nd floor. That level felt a bit shabbier...perhaps the higher floor had been recently renovated. Beds were comfortable, and the bathroom on the higher floor had underfloor heating. There was an attractive optional screen for bathroom privacy. We would definitely stay here again.

7th floor king suite. Great location in SOHO. Pleasant staff, clean room, great views and drinks at the rooftop bar. Was concerned and considered changing hotels after reading some reviews about cleanliness and quality but did not run into a single issue. Would stay again in a heart beat. Actually preferred it to 11 Howard Place where we stayed as well.

The James is a great choice. Can't beat the location, area shopping and dining are terrific. Such a special place. We were there to celebrate a special occasion and it was at every turn. The restaurant in the hotel, David Burkes Kitchen is lovely as are all the people who work there. We will return soon...

We picked this hotel because we had an event in Soho and the location was quite convenient. Overall, it was a largely positive experience with a few missed details that were frustrating. Pros: 1) The location-the hotel is on the very edge of Soho. As such, it's also quite convenient to Tribeca. Lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. 2) Architecturally interesting building 3) Large rooms by lower Manhattan standards The Meh: 1) Being on the edge of Soho, it's right near the entrance to the Holland tunnel and a less than gorgeous block. Some rooms look out onto a vacant lot bordered by the tunnel traffic. #notelegant 2) The room looked a little worse for the wear-dents and dings on some of the fixtures etc. The Bad: 1) The toiletries were of inferior quality. Despite being natural/organic/free of bad stuff, they were not premium. The shampoo was positively watery. 2) They forgot to re-stock towels the second night so I literally had no towels (which I figured out post-shower). 3) Only one elevator was working leading to vertiginously long waits for the elevator. 4) The rooftop bar has a great view but the service was lacking and the crowd was frankly a little trashy.

Amazing corner suite on 14th floor arranged by manager. You won't get a better view in downtown Manhattan. Great SOHO location Nice extras such as coffee, fruit, pastries in the sky lobby Cool roof terrace and bar Highly recommended - the best hotel, right in the heart of the action. Thanks mr Rauer !!!!
