Of the hotels I've stayed in Manhattan The James was the best experience. A big thanks to Rebecca Z. for taking such good care of us, as well as all the other great staff that made our stay so pleasant including Elaine, Rebecca C., Brian, Yu-On, Morgan, Maurice, Vasylyna, Elmo, Jonathan, Ron, and the friendly bellmen Eric, John, and Jimmy. Our room had a wall-to-wall window with a fantastic view of One World Trade Center and its surrounding skyline. The room was spacious, the rain shower relaxing, and the bed very comfortable. Up at Jimmy's on the roof you get even more of a panoramic view of the city which was beautiful at night. We also enjoyed brunch at David Burke's where the staff was also friendly and accommodating, and the food was very good.

I arrived at The James to be shown to a $450 a night room - which had HUGE dead moths on the drapes near my bed. I spoke to reception who promised to move me the next night to an upgraded but discounted room, which at the end of my stay cost me over $900 a night!!! They basically doubled my room charge to a room under the penthouse roof bar where the noise went on until way after midnight!! I would NEVER recommend this flea pit of a so called 'hip' hotel. On the contrary I shall do my best to deter others from having the same unfiortunate experience as I did. I'm a seasoned traveller having stayed at many NY hotels from The Pierre, Fours Seasons and down. This is undoubtedly the worst.

Terrible experience and bad service. I have to switch room twice: first room has heat/AC issue. They cannot fix it, so i have been asked to move to another room; So I have to pack and move and no one apologized for the inconvenience! The second room basically can hear everything from the neighboring room. When I reported this, the front desk and front desk manager first denied it until they hear the clear sound from my room and have to admit. However, she claims no room and ask me to wait until later - said if might quiet down. When it is almost 11pm, it is the same thing. She suddenly found a room and ask me to move again. So pack and move again so late. Again, no apology at all! The third room smelled strong detergent and I am too tired to even complain! Never again!

I took my Son and his Cousin shopping for the weekend and from Check in to Check out it was a wonderful experience. We were upgraded to a wonderful Penthouse Suite which made the stay even more wonderful. Will definitely stay there again.

Second time we stay at the James: Location is perfect if you want to be in the heart of Soho. Great roof terrace bar called Jimmy with outdoor mini pool included. VERY trendy. Almost too much as the hotel guests share the same lifts with the bar cool on goers and sometimes there is a bit of queue / wait. The hotel is now some 7-8 years old and you can feel the difference versus when we stayed here 2-3 years ago. Super friendly staff. Go for a corner room - definitely worth the views. Good news for all: All rooms are generally larger than the average NY room - especially compared to the trendy Soho Grand hotel next door. Beds are super comfy - including the pillows. Large, powerful and functional shower. Good mini bar.
