About the Hotel

Inspired by the insatiable wanderlust and rebellious spirit of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the historic downtown mansion once owned by the businessman and scion has been reinterpreted for the modern era as a lively and stylish social destination. From a secret bar tucked into a corner of the sumptuous Doris Duke-inspired parlor to the specially-commissioned series of mysterious and moody old world still lifes sprinkled throughout the foyer and lounge, the scene at The Vanderbilt is crackling with coastal curiosities and alluring eccentricities waiting to be discovered.

Reviews for The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection

Not the usual Auberge standard

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Quite disappointed with this Auberge which really doesn’t meet their normal standards. The room was large, two stories and was well equipped, sort of!! Had to ask several times for things you’d normally expect. Staff not as friendly or helpful as expected and the food can be split.. breakfast food was good and choice was ok.. evening meal was atrocious and the service and eating areas were awful.. actually found it quite grubby. Good base for Rhode Island which wasn’t what I expected at all.. very touristy and a little down market.. positively Baltic in March

The moment we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly staff ready and willing to assist us. Check in process was efficient. The room was immaculate. Staff through out our stay was so gracious and helpful. The entire inn is beautiful. The atmosphere creates a calm, warm and cozy feel. We loved every minute of our stay!

A Wonderful Way To Start 2026

I had a wonderful New Year’s stay at the Vanderbilt. Gabby and the entire front desk team were incredibly kind, welcoming, and genuinely invested in making sure my friend and I had an amazing vacation. That level of hospitality truly stood out. The property has such a cozy atmosphere with a beautiful Gilded Age edge. It feels both elegant and inviting. We attended the New Year’s Eve party and everything from the food and drinks to the entertainment was fantastic. All in all, it was an awesome New Year’s excursion, and I will absolutely be back to stay at the Vanderbilt.

Outstanding Experience with Elevated Historic Charm

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I have lived in Newport and have a business in town, but this is the first time at the hotel for either a food or overnight experience. The property is quintessential Newport - loads of historic detail and charm. It is elevated but understated at the same time. Loved the intimacy of the property and all the cozy rooms.
