Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Close We booked this trip somewhat last minute. We love LuxuryLink and have purchaseda number of packages through the site over the years. Hotel is stunning. With that said, this is a 5 star property with 3 star service :(. With a few tweaks this place couldbe amazing! - It may sound frivolous, but great vacations are all about the details! Upon arrival, we weren't given blue curacao cocktails (island specialty), like others were. Those little cocktails would have signified a big warm welcome into the property and started us off for a great week. Just rubbed us the wrong way, like we were forgotten - not a good feeling. - Service is really unpredictable. The people who work at the hotel are friendly but almost seem like they have, literally, no training. We never ever saw any management at the property. Servers would disappear for 20 sometimes 30 minutes and no staff would be around. Sometimes they'd forget about our food, sometimes about our food and drinks. This happened 3 times - each time the waiter insisted on giving us free drinks because of our wait. But after a while, that was annoying instead of a nice surprise for our troubles. Forget the guests' food and cocktails so give them a free one. Just seemed weird. How would management feel about this? -This is the worst-there is no concierge at the hotel! Literally not a concierge. All different answers from each staff person - one said the concierge doesn't work "on Fridays" (what????). Another says the concierge is in after 3pm (huh?). Finally a different staff person tells us there IS no concierge at all! Just so frustrating. We're not fanny pack wearing (no offense to those who are!) people who need every second of our day planned. However not having a single person to provide a restaurant recommendation was really annoying and pretty much unacceptable. This is not a motel. It's a sprawling, 5 star property. We then read online that "all front desk staff are trained concierges." It's simply not true. We asked maybe 4 people at the front desk and they each were laughing out of nervousness and pointing at the person next to them to take over - they didn't know where anything was, had no recommendations, no information. Really strange. We've never experienced such lack of training before - odd. How much would it cost to have a concierge working? One concierge. -The hotel is located 20-30 mins from Wilemstad, which is fine and the hotel has a shuttle bus that runs back and forth. The only problem is that the shuttle is organized through the "Activities Lady" who doesn't work for the hotel and doesn't work every day (wasn't there 2 of our 6 days there). We went to book one day for the same day shuttle and had asked about whether it could pick us up from the Dolphin Academy (happy to pay extra) on the way back from Wilemstad (it's on the route there). The lady said that they can't make any additional pick ups/drop offs and that the bus was full that day. We were slightly miffed as what is the purpose of a service if you have to wait a few days to book and then it's full. Surely the hotel could run it itself. To add insult to injury we asked about the bus afterwards at the front desk and Agemend (sorry about the spelling- an excellent and very helpful member of the front desk along with Meleny) said the bus can make drop offs, that it does so all the time and that that particular day the bus was cancelled because there were not enough guests to go on it. I believe him and I think this Activity Lady needs to start telling the truth or maybe the hotel should start doing it itself to manage the quality control. Could the hotel have its own small van rather than a bus or have an arrangement with a taxi company for couples sharing? Maybe have a board with those who are going on the bus so it there's not enough one could make alternative plans? - The hotel had music entertainment a few nights which was great but it was never posted anywhere when the music was on. Bit of a shame as the music was great. - Staff at the lagoon were awesome. Friendly and efficient. Specifically Ludy - such a nice guy-always smiling and so pleasant. Loved seeing him. - Same for the pool. Maurice- the towel attendant remembered our names everyday and our room number- impressive! We should note that we never had to worry about getting chairs on the beach/at the pool which was great. Very relaxed. - Sea Traditions rooms were very nice but required getting the front desk to send a golf cart shuttle. The "butler's" 4 person cart didn't work when we were there (all 6 days). Just a bit of a hassle. - We did the half day snorkel on the Bounty Adventures catamaran. Great activity and really nice people operating the boat. Lunch was delicious. - Golf course was spectacular and the round was quick which was also a bonus :-). This is a magnificent hotel. It can be a world class hotel with some small adjustments and better management. Would definitely go back there again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Out in the boondocks Very friendly staff and so accommodating. We we're told that the government now owns the resort, which may explain the poor service around the pool. The resort puts on a 15% service charge, so the wait staff really aren't challenged to provide top knotch service. The golf course service was exceptional, especially Devorah.
