Sand-fringed atolls scattered like pearls across a brilliant turquoise sea, the Maldives have been a favorite retreat of sultans and kings, world travelers and adventurers for decades. Located southwest of Sri Lanka, these "pearls of the Indian Ocean" are stunningly beautiful, offering a perfect retreat from the western world. Here, at the exclusive Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru, your Robinson Crusoe fantasy is fulfilled with a luxurious twist.

The Banyan Tree Maldives is an excellent choice for travellers looking for calm, understated luxury and an intimate atmosphere. I stayed here for five nights and can highly recommend the resort. There are many hotels in the Maldives, but Banyan Tree stands out because it is an older property with a very distinct character. There are no overwater villas. Everything sits directly on the island, which feels more natural and arguably more environmentally responsible. The resort is small, with only 48 villas, which creates a quiet and relaxed setting. Most guests seem to be couples looking for a peaceful time together. The chain has a sister resort just 10 minutes away, which is more for families with kids. Banyan Tree itself is a relatively small luxury hotel group and feels very different from the large global chains that often operate like points factories. The atmosphere here is more personal. Guests are treated simply as guests rather than as tiers in a loyalty program. In that sense everyone has the same status: preferred guest. What really stands out is the service. The staff genuinely seem to work as a team and the atmosphere among them is very positive. Everyone I encountered—from the restaurants to the front desk—was extremely helpful, courteous, and attentive. Nothing was overlooked. Requests were handled quickly and with genuine friendliness. The front office manager even helped organise a few non-standard arrangements without hesitation. The food is another highlight. The resort has two restaurants, one Japanese and one Thai. I travel frequently to both countries, and the quality here compares well with very good restaurants there. I’m not a fan of the iPad menu cards, I prefer physical menus instead of looking at another screen on holiday. But that’s a detail. I booked direct with the hotel and had bed-and-breakfast only. Considering that everything has to be flown into the Maldives and prepared on the island, the pricing is reasonable. The physical infrastructure is exceptionally well maintained. The engineering team clearly takes great care of the property and replaces or repairs things as soon as they begin to age. The style may be classic rather than ultra-modern, but the upkeep is immaculate. There are essentially two types of villas: oceanfront villas and villas slightly set back from the shore. They alternate along the island. I had the opportunity to stay in both. While the beachfront villa naturally offers a wonderful direct sea view, the standard villa was also excellent, with a beautiful private garden and still partial views of the ocean. Another advantage is the location. Malé and the airport are only about 20 minutes away by boat, which makes arrival and departure very easy and pleasant. Overall, this is a wonderful resort with a very special atmosphere. My thanks to the entire team for creating such a memorable stay.

This was our 5th stay at the lovely Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. I really don't know where to start, literally everything was perfection. This island just keeps getting better every time we visit. Transfer was smooth, quick and very professional. Arrival was superb, we only had to wait for like half an hour until our room got ready while sipping drinks at my beloved Naiboli bar, which got an amazing little renovation. Reception staff was so welcoming, it was so good to see familiar faces like Okta, Waheed and Fipit. While we had booked the grand oceanfront beach villa last time, we had booked a sunset ocean front villa but still got upgraded to the grand oceanfront which was a lovely surprise, thank you for that. Room spectacular as always, cleanliness was perfection, room attendant was great, and the aircon working superb. Spa, as good as it gets, still my favorite form all islands we have visited so far. We were a bit reluctant to join the management cocktails but if was simply amazing with the set up, all the staff and great drinks and bites. Food, OMG, it was soooo good! All of very high quality, a lot of choices. Also breakfast was really really good. We did the catamaran sunset cruise and what an experience it was. Staff, nothing is too much, they are all so accommodating, from spa, restaurants, reception and dive center. I honestly couldn't fault a thing. So glad we choose Vabbinfaru at the end of our vacation and left the Maldives on a high. Thank you all at Vabbinfaru, will definitely be back soon! To everyone, don't hesitate, just book this lovely tranquil island....

Banyan Tree came to our rescue. After our flight home was cancelled we were left with nowhere to stay - Banyan Tree to the rescue!! We managed to secure a slice of paradise and extend our holiday by a further three days. Thanks to Allath from the front desk team, Fipit who couldn’t do enough for us in the restaurants and Vicky who looked after us in the bar. Thanks for everything 🥂

We had a wonderful experience at this hotel. Everything was truly excellent and we spent 9 dreamlike days here that we will never forget. A special thank you goes to Allath and Okta at the reception, whose impeccable assistance made our stay smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. Their professionalism and kindness made us feel welcomed every single day. We would also like to thank Fairooz for the incredible cleanliness of our room. The housekeeping service was simply outstanding and everything was always perfect. Finally, a very special mention goes to Uma from the Japanese restaurant. She is truly the most beautiful soul we met during our stay. Sweet, kind, and wonderful — a truly unique person unlike anyone we have ever met in our lives. Meeting her was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you all for making our stay so special. We hope to come back again someday

Absolutely perfect 2-night stay at Vabbinfaru Maldives! We stayed in the Ocean View Pool Villa, which faces directly toward the sunset—every evening the sky turned breathtakingly beautiful, making it the best sunset view we’ve ever had. All meals were delicious, and one night’s authentic Thai dinner was especially outstanding. Snorkeling here is top-tier. On our second morning, we took a speedboat to Ihuru (same group) for snorkeling. The house reef and drop-off are super close to shore; we easily spotted countless colorful fish, two sea turtles, and lovely blacktip reef sharks—it was incredible! A big thank you to our butler Allath for his warm, thoughtful service and great activity recommendations. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the Maldives!
