Baros Maldives in North Male Atoll, Maldives

Baros Maldives is one of the country’s original resorts – four decades ago, international communication happened via Morse Code and guests settled in for a three-hour dhoni ride to arrive on the atoll’s untouched shores. Today, the natural beauty of Kodhdhipparu-Baros Island perseveres, thanks to conservation efforts. Take part in the internationally recognized Reef Check program or go for a guided snorkel with the resident marine biologist to learn about the resort’s underwater residents, or just listen to the wind rustle through your villa’s palapa roof and appreciate the splendor of tropical solitude.

Walk across the teak floors of your villa to the magic that greets you outside – maybe you slip off the deck of your water villa into the crystalline Indian Ocean, or if you’re sleeping on land, linger under the rain shower of your outdoor bath. Relish the silence on the island’s deserted beaches. Order a gin and tonic in the shade. Dine on seared sea scallops with papaya, champagne and coriander mousseline as a three-piece jazz band keeps time with the setting sun.

We have just returned from a two island stay in the Maldives and Baros was our first stop. The resort is truly impressive with world class facilities and service. We had a beach pool villa which was superbly well appointed and in a great location and fantastically well maintained – it was also kept spotless by the room attendant during our stay. So much has been said about Baros already it is hard to add much more without repeating it, but, let me pick out a few points not often reviewed. • The evening entertainment which we saw was exceptional; the musicians were world class professionals which are not normally seen at hotels. • The entire resort is spotless - the toilet cleaners at the Sails bar deserve special mention as the facilities are more like an operating theatre! • Food – Excellent throughout – we never had one even slightly disappointing meal! • The house reef is great and very impressive with a massive array of sea life (although we did experience a better reef further south). The marine team are also great – friendly, knowledgeable and willing to help and answer questions. A big benefit of the island is its proximity to Male, it really is just a short speedboat ride from the airport, the downside of this is that there are a few other islands on the horizon and for those looking for a deserted feeling holiday this would not be the ideal choice. Other than the transfer time the other benefit of the location is that this affords a fantastic choice of food, entertainment etc! On our last day, with about 15 mins. to leave, my wife managed to drop an expensive ring through the deck on our villa. A call to our villa host resulted in the maintenance team being on site within a few minutes. As access could not be obtained from the sides of the deck they were prepared and equipped to dismantle the deck, however, they were eventually able to fish out the ring on wire without any major upheaval. I mention this to demonstrate the fact that the resort staff really do have a fantastic attitude to all guests whatever their request or problem; maintenance, restaurant staff, marine staff or cleaners. I assume this has been instilled and promoted by Jay, the General Manager who was visible throughout our stay and who also made a point of stopping to engage in conversation wherever we met, a genuinely nice guy. It is actually very hard to find fault with the resort, staff or service. However, if I was pushed I would say the television channel could be better, as could the picture quality, and a couple of extra pool towels would have been nice. In short, if you are considering Baros, go there! I am sure it will live up to its reviews.

Been back 5 days now after spending 1 week in Baros - We had an amazing time there. From the moment we boarded the boat from airport till we left we were treated to impeccable service from very friendly staff - always greeted with smiles and nothing was too much trouble from whatever requests we had. Big shout to Rana - our Villa host who greeted us on arrival and waved us off - and arranged anything we needed. If I could remember other names I would equally thank them all as everyone was so friendly and happy to chat about the island etc - was nice to find people who had worked on Baros for over 10 years - added a very personal touch to the place. Stayed in Water Villa 327 and on Bed/Breakfast. Villa had a great view at the far end of the reef for spotting whatever swam by - plenty fish/sharks and the odd rays. The Sun left our deck by early afternoon - but as we spent most of the day snorkelling from the beach at the other end - it didn't matter Both being vegetarians I'd resigned myself to limited food options - but there was plenty and the food was amazing. Cayenne probably the least choice - but the Lighthouse food was very special, Lime had lots more options - all of which we tried were also lovely. When The Maldivian night was on the staff made an exception for me to order Veg food from different menu so I could be part of the experience - which was nice - and as Rana knew we were vegetarian - she arranged all this for us. I was there for my birthday - Rana arrange champagne, a cake and was sung happy birthday at dinner - many thanks there too. Daytime food and snacks were always available from the Sails Bar - which not only does excellent cocktails - excellent Shisha - the pizza is seriously good - didn't expect it to be as good as it was - yeah Pizza !!!!!!!! took some for my plane journey home :) Did 3 dives - but to be honest the house reef was so good - snorkelling there I saw more than on 2 of the dives. Head to the areas near Cayenne restaurant for the best spots and easiest if your not that comfortable snorkelling. Evenings were spent watching Sunsets - drinking cocktails, live music in the background. Only did 1 excursion and that was the evening Dolphin cruise - which turned out to be a highlight - great speedboat, champagne, canapes and Dolphins and Pilot Whales - excellent time was had. Catch the Mrice talk too - really interesting to find out about the wildlife in and around the island. Highly recommend Baros - was pretty perfect :) Richard

There are already so many positive reports on Baros resort, that in an effort to give a slightly different view, I am including a description of our journeys to & from the resort to help travellers make their visit to Baros even better. We chose to fly to Male with Emirates via Dubai. They are a great airline and give the option of connections with the daytime flights from London or the alternative of a stopover in Dubai, and for us a three-night stay in a desert resort! By taking the daytime onward flight from Dubai to Male, you have the thrill of observing the Maldivian Islands in spectacular fashion on your final approach. This experience is so good that even the experienced Flight Attendants were looking out of the windows and gasping! On arrival at Male, the Baros Airport Meet & Greet team are waiting, and you are escorted out the terminal and across the road to the waiting Baros speedboat. During the 30-minute ride you enjoy plush seating, drinks, cold towels and views of the approaching resort. As you arrive at the pier the second Baros Meet & Greet team are waiting for you and are you taken through check-in and provided with a tour of the island (it does not take long) by your Villa Host. The different types of Villas are detailed on the website and all are kept in immaculate order with a choice of beach front aspect or over-water. One of the reasons we had not gone to the Maldives before, is that we thought a small island would be boring after just a few days. However, that is not the case as the House Reef provides different snorkelling opportunities every day and for the more experienced, there are trips out to distant reefs and dive sites. For the experienced diver, this really is a hot-spot. Apart from the water-based activities, Baros also provides nature walks and many different excursion opportunities. The sunset Dolphin Cruise is very popular, and we saw Spinner Dolphins for the first time before enjoying Champagne & Canapes admiring the setting sun. Obviously, all Maldives resorts have a captive audience for their restaurants as it is not an option to walk out of the hotel to a local alternative. It is important therefore to have a good choice and at Baros there are four. We celebrated a special occasion with dinner at the Lighthouse, which is an exceptional dining experience. Sundowners at the Lighthouse Bar is also not to be missed. I would like to thank Nasfaan, Shidad, Nazir, Kumar, Eliza and Jay for looking after us during our stay and all the hospitality teams in the restaurant & bars. To finish our vacation, we had an early start from the island and were offered an in-villa breakfast, before a fond farewell from the team at the pier and then back to Male for our Emirates flight. Be aware that that all passengers enter airport security through only one entrance, so it is a scrum and plenty of time is needed. Travelling west the clock works in your favour and we had a 3-hour connection in Dubai before boarding the A380 for our journey back to Heathrow, arriving back the same evening to a very cold London.

We are enjoying our last few hours on the beautiful island of Baros. This is our second visit and it did not disappoint. We have spent time on four other resorts in the Maldives but Baros stands head and shoulders above the others. From the moment we were collected by boat from another island we were looked after by all their very attentive staff and the lovely Asim our villa host was at hand if we required anything . The quality of food and attention to detail in villas and gardens is outstanding and a credit to staff and management. We come to snorkel and relax so the amazing house reef is all important . Thank you everyone at Baros. Stephen and Liz Taylor

Baros is an exceptionally well run beautiful location and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a sea view pool villa so amazing view. Staff all very helpful and friendly, food out of this world but...... we came on a half board basis so breakfast and supper included supposedly, however it turned out that you only get 45% of your supper included (obviously not drinks) and then 10% service charge and 12% added tax on top of that. I feel we should have been warned about this as it does bump up the price of the holiday considerably,as it is it works out at £1,000 per day before you have to pay all this extra stuff. Everything is added on, i have been to the Maldives before and on other islands snorkelling, diving, yoga etc are all free, Baros charge for everything which makes it feel like they are squeezing you for every penny they can . Beautiful place but value for money you can get so much better on other atolls. Fabulous week but we wouldn’t return.
