Baros Maldives in North Male Atoll, Maldives

Baros Maldives is one of the country’s original resorts – four decades ago, international communication happened via Morse Code and guests settled in for a three-hour dhoni ride to arrive on the atoll’s untouched shores. Today, the natural beauty of Kodhdhipparu-Baros Island perseveres, thanks to conservation efforts. Take part in the internationally recognized Reef Check program or go for a guided snorkel with the resident marine biologist to learn about the resort’s underwater residents, or just listen to the wind rustle through your villa’s palapa roof and appreciate the splendor of tropical solitude.

Walk across the teak floors of your villa to the magic that greets you outside – maybe you slip off the deck of your water villa into the crystalline Indian Ocean, or if you’re sleeping on land, linger under the rain shower of your outdoor bath. Relish the silence on the island’s deserted beaches. Order a gin and tonic in the shade. Dine on seared sea scallops with papaya, champagne and coriander mousseline as a three-piece jazz band keeps time with the setting sun.

We thought we would split our Maldivian holiday and as we could not decide between Baros & its sister island Velassaru we did both. Baros is a lovely small island with 75 villas-most over water. They do not allow under 8s which we like but effectively this cuts out most under 20s so the island has a more mature, gentle, well off feel about it. Given that it is 50% to 100% dearer than Velassaru that is not surprising. It is a lovely immaculately kept island with a good deal of facilities but only three restaurants but all very good quality. We would have liked a fourth perhaps a wine bar with food. Breakfasts were super and would be hard to beat. Staff were excellent although a little less so than Velassaru, not quite as attentive or friendly-but still very good. The manager 'J' was away on a jolly in Germany so we were sorry to not meet him. There reef was very good amongst the best we have seen but we are not authorities on diving and snorkelling, the marine centre was very helpful. The service we received in our transfers from Velassaru and back to Male was amazing, made it very easy for us-well done. Pros, Great reef, great breakfast, great service Cons, to expensive-it is not a state of the art island and there are many new kids on the block, also they charge service and tax as extras on every price 23% so a shock to many and surely bad practice. They have many returners this could be because they are good or they just haven't tried other islands which are now better value. Baros whilst good, might be resting a little on its laurels so they will have to raise their game or reduce their prices. David & Trish Bath UK

Baros was amazing, their service and hospitality went above and beyond our expectation. House Reef - We snorkelled 3x a day, the house reef is just beautiful. Very diverse and full of marine life. We saw turtles, lots of sharks, eagle rays, frog fish. you won't be disappointed with the marine life there. Staff - they really put so much effort to make our stay memorable. special thank you for Azzam (Villa host), Domi (Guest experience), Rafaa (Airport guy), Zoey (breakfast), Ali (lime), Nazeem (Lighthouse), Wisam (Room attendant), Ali, Choni and Nathan (Dive center) and Elisa (marine centre) Room - big, modern, spacious and extremely clean. From the inside, outside, the pool and the boat itself they are extremely clean. Food - amazing food especially the breakfast selection - best breakfast we ever had. Must try the crepes and the waffle. And lastly considering that my wife is pregnant, the staffs had been looking after her really well and made sure everything is safe and comfortable for her stay here. Baros is a hidden gem in Maldives.

This is the most breathtaking island, it really did surpass all expectations and we had the most incredible time. Everything about Baros is elegant and luxurious, top class food, service and set up. There is absolutely nothing that can be faulted. I still dream that I'm going to wake up and see the sun rising in the morning, be able to wander out to our private bit of beach so close to the water. And the water is perfect! So ridiculously clear which just makes the snorkelling awesome. We saw turtles, sharks, mantarays the lot! What's great too is that Baros is doing so much conversation work - really inspirational! Thank you so much to the whole team at Baros for making the holiday so amazing, we have already started saving for the next time!

The rooms are very spacious and airy - the bathrooms are outdoors!! unforgettable in all ways. A mature resort with both beach and over water villas. Food is first class and lives up to its reputations. Not to miss the well supplied wine cellar. Only downside is that it may be windy.

The luxurious setting and ambience of the room and the wonderful outdoor shower are heavenly. Special thanks goes to Jay and Ramsey. Truly grateful for your kind and meticulous attention to detail, making my stay at your amazing island paradise most memorable! I’ll definitely be back!
