Baros Maldives in North Male Atoll, Maldives

Baros Maldives is one of the country’s original resorts – four decades ago, international communication happened via Morse Code and guests settled in for a three-hour dhoni ride to arrive on the atoll’s untouched shores. Today, the natural beauty of Kodhdhipparu-Baros Island perseveres, thanks to conservation efforts. Take part in the internationally recognized Reef Check program or go for a guided snorkel with the resident marine biologist to learn about the resort’s underwater residents, or just listen to the wind rustle through your villa’s palapa roof and appreciate the splendor of tropical solitude.

Walk across the teak floors of your villa to the magic that greets you outside – maybe you slip off the deck of your water villa into the crystalline Indian Ocean, or if you’re sleeping on land, linger under the rain shower of your outdoor bath. Relish the silence on the island’s deserted beaches. Order a gin and tonic in the shade. Dine on seared sea scallops with papaya, champagne and coriander mousseline as a three-piece jazz band keeps time with the setting sun.

If Jacques Cousteau bought a private island and hired James Bond to decorate it Baros would be the result. We got married at Baros over New Years and the experience was life changing. Let’s start with what Baros isn’t. Baros is not for kids. Baros is not a party island. Baros is not for people who don’t like their travel companions (one doesn’t mingle with other guests the way one might at other resorts). Baros is not for budget travelers. What Baros is though is nothing short of breathtaking. The island paradise is manicured and curated like an open air museum. The island is owned by a prominent Maldivian family, staffed by a small army of friendly locals, and run like a Swiss watch by a Europen couple who are well equipped to meet the high expectations of guests from around the world. Baros’ culture is rooted in 5 star service but the island also has a long history of world class diving and snorkeling which brings a sense of raw adventure to the resort. Baros sits atop a healthy and vibrant coral reef. I personally snorkeled from my pool villa (314) at least 2-3 hours per day. Friendly sharks, sea turtles, and every tropical fish imaginable are a 15 second swim from the villas. The food is excellent but very expensive. There are 3 restaurants and a fantastic but seldom used bar. Take advantage of the beautiful breakfast every morning because it’s included in the room charge. Maldivian style local reef fish is great. The sushi at Baros is also terrific. Their flagship restaurant “Lighthouse” is worth every penny but make sure you bring a lot of pennies. The sun is no joke here. Wear sunscreen at all times. Limit sun exposure between 11am-3pm. Spend as little time at the Male airport as possible. For those who want the perfect romantic island paradise vacation this is it. It’s unlikely a better alternative even exists. And yes, it looks just like the pictures on the website. This place doesn’t need photoshop.

This really is the one. Well, one of the ones. We split our time there between the deluxe pool villa and the water villa. I honestly couldn’t pick a favourite. I will say that the deluxe villa is MASSIVE. A huge space, with a jungle shower and a long garden leading to the white coral Baros sand. Breakfast had a wide, excellent selection to choose from, as one would expect. We really enjoyed the evening buffet that they do 3 times a week. I also thought the Lighthouse restaurant was a fantastic offering on such a small island. The work the hotel are doing on marine conservation is a real inspiration. The house reef is thriving with sharks, turtles, various rays, and all sorts of fish. One evening we set out on the sunset cruise, and managed to run into some dolphins on the way back. I thoroughly recommend that if it fits with your schedule. Service is flawless in every aspect of Baros life. With 300 staff for 75 villas, there wasn’t a ball dropped all week. My thanks to Nas, Nathan, Monika, G, Ronny and many more, who gave us their time, and made our stay extraordinary. Interestingly, and proof, if it were needed on how good the product is, the returning guest rate is 40% at Baros. And with the current record at 55 visits by one couple from Europe, my new life goal is to smash that before I die.

This was our 4th visit to Baros and it was as fabulous as ever. 9 blissful days doing nothing but just relaxing, snorkelling, sleeping and being privileged and humbled to be at such a wonderful place. The staff make this place, they are superb and always go above and beyond. Special thank you to Zoe in the Cayenne restaurant and Upal the most brilliant chef who catered for my wifes gluten allergy perfectly. Don't hesitate, if you can, go here.

In February we will return for the 4th time to our paradise BAROS, our favourite resort in the MALDIVES! This small peaceful tropical island is a little juwel, where maldivian tradition is still kept alive (maldivian owned)! Their focus is on sustainability and respect for nature, without forgetting the luxury. (Baros inspired me to my Tripadvisor name). We fell in love with these most friendly people, when we first arrived in 2015. Each time we enjoyed every moment and appreciated the tranquility, the authentic kindness of the staff, the excellence of service and the high quality and freshness of food. It's utter perfection! (We cannot understand some strange reviews about Baros. These people don't deserve to stay there!). After your arrival you are accompanied to the speedboat and your holidays begin (proximity to the airport is a plus). At BAROS you are welcomed by the smiling staff and you feel at home immediately. The Resort Manager MUSTHAFEEZ is amazing! He has a personalised relationship with all his guests and does everything possible to satisfy their needs. The breakfast buffet selection is world class, for all tastes and nationalities (french baguette, fresh mangos..). It's a great pleasure! The LIME offers excuisite food (tasty fish, icecream..).We appreciate the excellent service. Take drinks and canapes at the LIGHTHOUSE LOUNGE and enjoy the breathtaking sunset (6 p.m). It's amazing to have dinner at the stylish LIGHTHOUSE (fine dining, early reservation required) and watch the sharks cruising by at night. Very romantic. The Food & Beverage Manager ABDULLA does an excellent job, he is very friendly , attentive to every detail and welcomes his guests personally at the restaurants! Every member of the staff is smiling at you from the gardener to the Management! We highly recommend BAROS without hesitating! The housekeeping makes sure your villa is always extremely clean. Beds are very comfortable. From the Beach villa walk on the pristine sand right into the sea. At the Water villas enjoy the wonderful ocean view. BAROS is fantastic for snorkeling. Discover the unspoilt, beautiful sea life at the house reef. Hopefully you see turtles. Unwind and spoil yourself at the excellent SPA with professional asian therapists. It's a bliss! We cannot stay at another resort anymore, as we are always extremely satisfied at BAROS and it exceeds our expectations! It's a dream come true! We are counting the days to meet our BAROS family again! They have their heart in the right place!

We were unlucky with the weather. We were at Baros for 5 days and for 5 days we had rain and storms. We managed to get some snorkelling in between rains though. And we loved it. We wanted to get away for a few days and we love the Maldives having visited a couple of times before. Most resorts in the Maldives are very very good but we look especially for good food highly and, of course, a nice room. Having tried both we now tend to get a beach villa as we have found this to be nicer than the water villas (direct access to beach, less wind, more space). Baros is, of course, not cheap and we spent around €200 per day on food and drinks - lunch and dinner only. Add spa and diving on top of that and the local costs easily added up to the roughly €1800 we spent during 5 days. But Baros has it all and then some. It is close enough to the airport that you don’t need to get a seaplane (fun the first time but expensive and time consuming in my opinion). It has a fantastic house reef that you can access directly from the beach. We swam with small sharks and turtles which was amazing. The food and drinks are second best - we have eaten even better (at Hilton now renamed to something else far up north in the atolls) but that is some time ago. We’d probably give the Lighthouse restaurant a miss next time as we did not enjoy the food enough to match the prices. The other restaurants are nice. Breakfast is great. Spa was fabulous, dive school great, room amazing. We loved the live jazz evening. Tip to Baros: assuming you have guests from all over the world (including us Swedish/German couple) it would be really great if you could, somewhere, give some hint as to the tipping policy and customs on the island. Who do you tip? When do you tip? How much do you tip? Of course we appreciate it varies but in Scandinavian countries we are not used to tipping at all so this would help. Even getting an idea before arrival (do you tip the boat staff? All? One way? Way back?) as we had not brought any cash at all to the island and felt a little awkward about that. Tip for visitors: bring some snacks and sweets to have in your room, the selection is limited and you may miss it. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We hope to be back and that next time the sun is shining and the sharks are still small and friendly :-)
