One&Only Reethi Rah in North Male Atoll, Maldives

Whether you're swimming in the company of sea creatures or just watching them from your villa suspended over the sea, water is a way of life at One&Only Reethi Rah. Few islands in the Maldives are more idyllic or spacious than the one that houses this decadent compound, where a dozen beaches – that's right, 12 of them – beckon from villas with cathedral ceilings and shaded verandahs, some with a private plunge pool. A chic boutique sells Stella McCartney swimwear you’ll love to flaunt, and sommelier Jean Sebastien Azaļs oversees one of the largest wine cellars in the world – some 30,000 bottles, ranging from rare Bordeaux to boutique South African labels.

From your Water Villa, slide into a stone lounger submerged in Indian Ocean currents the temperature of bathwater. Order a glass of fresh passion fruit juice. In the afternoon, board a catamaran destined for a deserted sandbank, where an uninterrupted slice of white sears into a cerulean sky. Dine on lemongrass-infused yellowfin in a candlelit corner of the chef’s vegetable garden.

We travelled in 2015 for our first visit to the Maldives, Reethi Rah which was outstandling the best holiday we had experienced to date. Having been all over the world to multiple destinations in the Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius there is a lot of competition. On the second visit the staff and accommodation was nowhere near what we received on the first visit. We arrived and to our shock we apparently had not booked a villa with pool. We did not want to stay in a room without a pool as that was our favourite touch to the island and it cost us a further Ā£2000 which was required up front there and then. It was a bit of a disappointment as I was more than certain that this was agreed previous to our visit. On this occasion the Half Board was more accommodating and cheaper than our previous visit which made me a bit wary of how their prices change depending on the time of year. We also wanted to swim with Turtles and see some sea life. We were told that due to the rough conditions in the sea that we would not be able to go out on the daily trip at 10am or something similar. They arranged for us to go privately as we were so keen to go and I assumed this was at their own offer. Little did we know that we had to pay for this journey which cost around 600GBP for 2 hours! Worst of all, it turns out that the session DID go out that day as we met a couple who informed us that they had been out that day!! This really angered me because on the day of settling the bill we found out that we had been conned into chartering a boat to pay a huge fee whilst the main boat did go out. I feel that on this occasion they were very much trying to make as much money as possible from us. I do not feel that the amount of money we paid we were treated like we should have been. I would have liked to feel a bit more welcome. Having stayed in the Seychelles the same year I realised just how different the level of service was comparing the 2 hotels. It is a shame as our first visit was lovely and we were looking to stay at Christmas. We have now booked somewhere else.

2nd time at this resort. I had the most amazing week, even better than 5 years ago! Started with a complementary yoga class in a desert island near the resort w lovely Joan! The Vilas are like the pictures-no disappointment. Loved the warm and kind welcome and goodbyes, making you feel truly special, from every one - Managers Leon and Herchell to concierge Rifau dear Chef Emmanuel. So many healthy and tasty options on the breakfast menu! Also perfect location for keen scuba divers, I did Advanced and Nitrox PADI certification with KG who knows so much, is very sensible and takes some really cool underwater pictures! My mum did her 100th Dive and got a sand sculpture as a gift (see pictures)-as an example how they make things special. Tennis was good fun with Morgan and it's the courts are in great condition. Although expensive, the SPA is simply the best quality I have ever been and I've tried so many all over, including England. You feel so pampered and looked after! Lastly the entertainment was of good quality, particularly w smiling Brook on the guitar and one of the local groups-me and my family danced every night! Definitely would come back!

Nothing compares withReethi Rah. We have been invarious Amans, FourSeasons, Six Senses, Mandarin Orientals, Raffles, Peninsulas, Ritz-Carltons, Como Shambala, Conrads...Its I think the 12 time year and is better than ever: it still has the dedicated and discerning service of the Oriental Bangkok, the truly friendly hosting of great masters of this art like Leon or Morgan, as in the best Amans, the tennis courts, the yoga pavillion and bykes, outstanding management of the spa by Hershel , the unbeatable room service and cleaning, and the always present room buttler, the every night live music that makes me and my wife and daughter dance crazily all night long, the gym trainers always nice and discerning, scuba diving at its best by KJ... But the haute couture dress noone else has is chef Emanuel: what a character! and his unmatchable experience, linked to Jean Luc Naret knowledge, made the RR restaurants the very best in the world for a week ( or more) holiday, because he links amazing diversity of either top michelin star creations, with always evolving organic and bio superfood creations, brilliant gluten free braeds and sweets ( excelent chef patissier from Serbia) ... surprising you every year! Do you want woodcock And of course, sea water , day and night temperatures of 30 deg celsiums...Who needs after life paradises ( only difference being rainy days)?

Once you stayed in this place, you truly will not want to consider any other resort. This is my second time at One and Only and it is as breathtaking and amazing as ever. The resort is absolutely beautiful, the food is of the highest quality, and the service of the staff is incomparable. Special mention to our concierge Tek, the Beach Club manager Abe, his caring staff and sommelier Manik, and Ash of the dive center for always helpful. Thanks you for a wonderful experience. Planning the next trip. See you really soon.

It's our third time enjoying this resort and it's one the best you can go. The quality of everything is great: food, the villas and the people. You only have to take care with the month you choose to go. This time we went in June (first week) and it was raining everyday.
