Off the west coast of Italy, the island of Sardinia is a distinctive Costa Smeralda destination with expansive Mediterranean and mountain views, rich history, and is home to one of the most famous jet-setting destinations in the world, Porto Cervo. Here, Hotel Cala di Volpe was designed to recall an ancient island village. This member of The Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels & Resorts welcomes with towers, poticoes and artfully adorned bedrooms with private balconies.

This hotel might be perfect for Instagram influencers looking to pose in designer clothes, but it is absolutely not designed for families. We booked Hotel Cala di Volpe based on its advertised child-friendly amenities — including a soccer camp — most of which were actually available during our stay. For the activities that were promised in advance but then not delivered, there was no attempt to offer alternatives or even apologize. To make matters worse, the hotel enforces a strict dress code after 7pm that goes beyond reasonable standards. If you're not in ultra-formal attire, you're essentially shamed — even if you're just walking through the lobby. One night we returned to the hotel around 10pm, dressed appropriately but not in head-to-toe designer labels, and were flat-out told we “didn’t belong.” That’s right — they questioned whether we were actual guests at their own hotel. We dress well, we travel often, and we’ve stayed at many high-end properties. Nowhere else have we been treated with such cold arrogance. The staff, particularly at the concierge desk, was consistently unhelpful and dismissive. Unless you're dripping in luxury fashion and looking to be seen rather than actually cared for, this hotel will not treat you with any warmth or respect. Families: look elsewhere. This place is a photo-op with a bed, not a welcoming resort experience.

The grounds of this place are absolutely beautiful. However, the room was just okay. We stayed in the 'Heritage' section, and it was on the smaller side. The shower was the smallest we encountered during our trip, out of the six hotels we stayed in. It was also the only room without a makeup mirror and the only one that didn't provide a tote bag for the beach or excursions. Perhaps the rooms on the other side of the hotel are nicer, as the ones on the website looked much more spacious and appealing than the one we were given.

Everything is nice about the hotel. Service is very good, every thing is well taken care of. Room had a nice nice sit out on the ground floor overlooking the garden. All fixtures and furnishings were top quality bathroom was also well done with seepage shower and tub. All Acqa do Parma amenities. Restaurant by the pool is where the breakfast is served . Very big spread and hot dishes too . We really spent a lot of time there enjoying the food and the sun. Hotel beach is a very short boat ride 10 minutes- free service from hotel every 15 minutes- they have beds water towels all complimentary . Some drinks as well. Nice clean calm beach we had a very good time. Nikki beach is also near by the reception staff arrange for us to be dropped by hotel car (complimentary) to the place from where free not service to Nikki beach starts . It’s 5 minutes drive from hotel. There are 5 different dining options on site all are best in town. No need to go out anywhere on the island. Spa is a bit small but nice we enjoyed the saunas and showers etc. it was good experience.

My husband and I visited this hotel for four nights for our wedding anniversary. We went away having VERY mixed feelings about our experience. I’m not huge on reviewing hotels, but THIS hotel stands alone and deserves a thorough review to inform others. As others have mentioned, the massive elephant in the room is the insane prices at this hotel. It left such a terrible feeling… at one point, I looked at my husband and said “are we being punked?” We travel extensively across Europe and are not afraid to splurge while vacationing, but this didn’t feel like splurging, it felt just wrong. If you are truly looking to book this hotel, I urge you to take a look at the menus and prices. Here are a few examples: Cocktail: 37€ Coca Cola: 15€ Lunch for one person: 125€ Room service hamburger: 40€ Small margarita pizza: 40€ Pros: -25 minutes from Olbia (although taxis are extremely expensive to/from hotel -Luxurious and comfortable beds, pillows, sheets and duvet -Great variety and quality of bathroom provisions (shampoo, etc) -AC that really works! -Very clean and well-appointed rooms -Good service, very attentive staff -Lovely breakfast location -Breakfast was included, and had a decent offering with a la carte options at no cost. -Close proximity to a great off property restaurant (fraction of the price) called Belvedere. -Recognition of our anniversary in the room and at one of our dinners -Comfortable sun loungers at the pool and beach Cons: -The absolute BIGGEST Con was the prices. I felt like I was being mugged in broad daylight each and every time I spent money on food -Mosquitos, we couldn’t leave our lanai door open -Small showers -INSANE prices for taxi. We felt captive to the hotel for this reason. 25 minute ride to the airport was €120 -Beach is a boat ride away from the property -Pesky beach vendors -Underwhelming property grounds -Cold, unheated pool I would not return to this hotel simply based on the value for money. Plain and simple. If the prices for food and taxis were halved, I’d be back. I would urge others to do research before booking and go in with eyes (and wallet) wide open.

The location is beautiful with sea views to the misty hills beyond, idyllic. The hotel has the facilities but the building itself is old- and there comes a point where rustic becomes plain tired and no amount of white paint can hide that fact. The main restaurant reflects the hotel’s age, the breakfast buffet is cramped and I have seen better offerings in lesser hotels, but service is generally good- and occasionally exceptional. The elephant in the room is the prices- €18 for two coffees…….no the hotel is not that special. It’s ten minutes by taxi to Porto Cervo- €40 each way and they claim their credit card machine doesn’t work. I have no problem paying for value, but this hotel needs to up its game- it isn’t as good as it thinks it is!
