Grand Hotel Oslo

Stayed in September for a business conference. My room was upgraded from a standard to a king room on the top floor with a terrace. While I was only in the room for sleep due to the conference, the history and atmosphere of the hotel was evident. The breakfast was easily accessible and had all that you need to start the day right. Located so close to the national theater train station if the price was right I would gladly stay again.

The room wasn't worth the price. There is absolutely room's better and cheaper to get in this part of town. Scratches everywhere cross the room, no wine och snacks in the minibar, cramped feeling bathroom. I will never stay here again. Also bad attitude from guard.

Stayed in this hotel while attending a business conference. The location is unbeatable. Right in the middle of the action in the historic area of Oslo. The hotel itself is very nice and lives to its reputation. Service was great (including a surprising early check in). The rooms are ample but they have these little steps to get in and to get into the bathroom that can be deceiving. The bed and pillows are heavenly. Bathroom excellent. The buffet breakfast is another level. One of the best I have experienced ever! My main concern is the noise isolation towards the outside. My room was facing a not so busy side street but even being in the 4th floor, I heard the people talking and, of course any other conversation happening there. That really affected my sleep for the two nights.

Its facade is fitting to its name and it has the elements you expect of a grand dame - history and grandeur for example. Of course, not all of those elements are good. So it is old and as a result some of the infrastructure is wearing a little. The first room we stayed in had a loud noise coming from the vents every 12 minutes which kept us from sleeping, for example (although they did allow us to move the following day), and the central air system didn’t work in one of our rooms, meaning they had to provide a fan. Some of the rooms rooms are dated in design. One of our rooms had carpet and thick material headboards, for example - meaning the room was pretty dusty (the other was refurbed with wooden floors and was much better). Bathrooms had over bath showers also - so quite 1980s. However, the hotel has a great location and the rooms were clean. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was good, as was the bar. So we weren’t unhappy with our stay at all - but I am just not sure how it can be said to be 5 star.

This is a nice historic hotel. Very clean, quiet and pleasant. This however, is not a five star hotel.No bellman or porter to help with luggage, both restaurants on property close by 5:00 on Sunday - limited bar bites after that. No turn down services, had to pay for water + room service fee to be brought to the room. Could not control room temp - was north of 75 degrees and would not cool down. Linens are nice, towels are small old and rough. Yes this maybe very critical, but if you are holding yourself out as 5 Star, these are the things that matter. For those who will say I don’t know what the European hotel experience is, I travel extensively and am accustomed to the differences between US and European hotels. (We’ve spent 6 weeks in Europe this year.) As I noted at the top the hotel is nice and I would stay here if rated 3+ to 4, with prices adjusted accordingly.
