This is going to be a short review because everything was perfect. The location is prime and the service impeccable. It may not be as "cool" in the sterile, modern way as some hotels today (the thief, W's) but we felt it was a graceful, elegant hotel in the grand European hotelier tradition. Would look to stay here again!

We stayed a Saturday night at the Grand Hotel in Oslo, and this is truly a magnificent hotel with a lot of history. The reception and lobby bar area give a very good first impression, and just walking around in the hallways on the way to the room makes me feel like a novelty. The rooms are big, and the bed is the most comfortable i have ever experienced at a hotel. The bathroom is also top notch. Breakfast is also some of the best i have had at a hotel. So if you want to feel like a king in Oslo, this is the hotel for you :)

Arriving at the Grand Hotel in Oslo, my wife and I were immediately impressed with the service and accommodations of the hotel. It was the second city of our Scandinavian tour with Firebird Tours and, in hindsight, it was the absolute best place we stayed at for the two weeks of our traveling. All the other hotels were great but this Grand Hotel was truly head and shoulders above the rest. It deserved the five star rating, starting from the style and comfort of the room to the breakfast served buffet style the next morning. The food was unbelievably gourmet tasty.I have never had better salmon. Centrally located, the location of the hotel could not have been better. Downtown and the old city were a stone's throw away. We could have been thrilled to stay there longer and will certainly come back to this hotel if we ever see Oslo again.

For the price we paid, I did not expect a full-on, traditional service European grand hotel, situated in the absolute heart of the city, with magnificent public spaces. But that was what this property delivered. Although the rooms are a bit less luxe, the Grand is in many ways comparable to places like the Savoy or the Sacher, in terms of location and grandeur. Check-in was smooth and professional, and our rooms were ready on arrival just after noon. Our room, 623, featured the most comfortable bed we were to experience in Scandinavia, two welcoming lounge chairs, and a good sized bathroom with separate toilet cabinet. Bathrobes and slippers were provided. The only downside was the interior view. The room was well serviced and amenities replaced. There is an ice dispenser in the hall near the elevator, which can save you a few kroner on bottled water. The free WiFi always worked well during our stay. The hotel's sumptuous breakfast features omelettes, sous vide boiled eggs, the usual arrays of Scandinavian smoked fish, breads and pastries. Croissants and pains aux chocolat were better than those we had at other hotels. The cheeses were of fine quality and condition, and the cold meat selection was good. Of note was a warm chicken liver pate that wasn't much on looks, but absolutely delicious. Coffee and juice service was on point. The KJG location means that most of Oslo's major tourist attractions can be reached on foot, for others, the Stortinget metro is near enough. You can go up to the rooftop bar for a quiet drink and a smoke, but on the weekends there is a dj and it gets sceney. We were able to enjoy whiskeys and cigars on Thursday, The interior access to the rooftop bar was closed on the second night of our stay, which seemed a bit odd. The only criticism I can offer is that the front of house seems a bit thinly staffed. Sometimes a member of the desk staff did double duty as the concierge, and I did not notice any bellmen at check-in, although the doormen helped us load our bags to and from cabs at check-in and departure. The ladies of the front desk were thorough, pleasant and well informed, so we were not inconvenienced in any way. A shout-out to them. Overall, a very fine stay. If I return to Oslo, I would stay here again.

For one of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Grand has some frayed edges. First, the good news: great location, expert and friendly concierges, top notch breakfast buffet. A lovely indoor swimming pool and adjacent spa. Now, the not so good elements. No computer center for hotel guests. In this modern era, that is unacceptable and inexplicable for a hotel of this reputation. The bed was squishy, as though you were sleeping on marshmallows. Again, unacceptable. There was construction going on on the 7th floor of the hotel that was noisy, dirty, and produced bad odors and allergens. (Again, not acceptable to put a guest a few doors away from where this work was done, sometimes starting at 6 AM.). In addition, when someone had a loud 1AM cell phone call just outside my room one evening, it took almost 15 minutes before the front desk sent someone up to investigate and handle the situation. Management made no attempt whatsoever at apologizing to me. The hotel's decor is a bit frayed in places. There is no doorman positioned at the entrance to the hotel for large portions of the day, which is extraordinary for a luxury hotel. Also, the wifi was erratic. I heard several other business guests complaining at the front desk and no viable explanation or solution was offered. How can a hotel expect business guests to be without email and internet access for hours at a time? I would not consider staying here again. The Grand is not so Grand now.
