Reviews for Grand Hotel Oslo

Exquisite hotel in the heart of Oslo. Highly recommended.

We have stayed in a lot of beautiful hotels worldwide and this one is up there at the top of the list! If we visit Oslo again I would endeavour to stay here without a doubt and will recommend to all. We stayed for 2x 1 night either side of a ski trip to Trysil as a family of 4 with 2 children. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by wonderful staff. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, we felt very welcome at all times. We arrived earlier than check in on our second stay and had access to the room immediately. Our first stay, our room was not ready but that was no problem as the hotel held our bags for us while we went to visit the Munch museum. Family rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean with the exception of some staining on the sofa fabric in our first room. Beds were very comfortable and a little box of chocolates left as a welcome gift. The bathrooms provided the usual amenities and the showers were great. Breakfast is served in the beautiful Grand Cafe and is certainly 5* with a comprehensive choice. I would say it was our favourite hotel breakfast experience ever. They offer a full range to cater to all dietary requirements with many milk options, freshly squeezed juice, an amazing selection of cured and fresh meats, fresh warm pate, tomato herring, cheese, various breads & ryvita, cakes, macarons, mini muffins, full cooked hot breakfast, yogurt, cereals, and fruit. They even had HP brown sauce which was very unexpected and much appreciated by an English lover of this sauce. My children loved the American style pancakes and we especially loved the revitalising ginger shots. The hotel is very beautiful inside. The library is worth a visit and a great quiet space if you have the time to relax. The bar and restaurant are stunning and the menu looked very enticing. Due to our short stays and having pre booked other dining options ahead, we did not dine here for lunch or dinner but we would book a table next time for sure. There is also a fantastic roof top bar (although no children allowed) which I imagine will be more amazing in the long summer evenings. If I find myself in Oslo in the future I will not hesitate to book this hotel again.

5 star experience all the way!

We stayed in 4 hotels in 3 countries and 4 cities and this one was the BEST! We got 5 star service. The hotel is super clean, updated/new, lovely modern decor, the staff is incredible and so accommodating from the manager to every single person we interacted with. We did not get to visit the roof top bar as out stay was only for 2 nights. Our junior suite had a big window that overlooked the square on a weekend a 10K race was taking place and we were able to open the windows and to watch the race. The suite itself was glamourous. I love all of the green concepts the hotel is embracing. The bathroom has both a soaking tub and a stand up shower. We will be back!

A very disappointing stay in what must have been a lovely hotel back in the day.

As we get longer in the tooth the Lady Orthpod and I tend to spend a bit more on hotels than we used to. As one of our lovely friends says - 'there' nae pockets in shrouds' and we have no kids to disinerit. So that is how we ended up at the Grand Hotel having decided to spend a few nights in Oslo on our way back from the quite lovely Lofotens. First all all the good things: a great central location, a very helpful front desk, and an excellent top-floor gym. But there were a lot of negatives. When we were shown to our room, we noticed that unusually, the bed had a double duvet rather than two singles - so we asked for this to be changed. No problem the lovely reception lady said. As we were unpacking, a hoousekeeper arrived, chucked a singly duvet on the sofa, and left. Leaving us with one double and one single duvet - not very practical! We mentioned this to the front desk on our way out to do a museum visit; they seemed pretty appalled, and I am glad to say that this was sorted out by the time we got back. We then tried and failed to get Room Service to deliver a jug of milk for our morning tea, which seemed an alien concept for them. Front desk to the rescue again! On our second night we decided to eat in the rather beautiful hotel restaurant. We sat and ordered, just as a large (apparently expected) group arrived. Our starters came and were fine. And then we waited and waited and enquired about our mains and waited and waited and then gave up. And left. The maitre d' then said that unfortunately our waiter was new, and had not actually put our main course order through. I mentioned that first class hotels were supposed to train their staff properly.. Dreadful. So it was a bar of chocolate from the min-bar for my dinner (it was too late by then to go elsewhere). Housekeeping didn't redeem themselve by not making a great job of cleaning the room, and didn't replace our teabags (good job we had taken our own), the bottle of wine from the fridge we drank on the first night and said bar of chocolate. The Grand has a bit of an air of faded grandeur and is poor value for money. This was a three night stay we will not be repeating when we are in Oslo again in July.

A beautiful hotel but with a few questions….

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

No doubt this is a beautiful hotel — Our room was spacious enough and the bed really comfortable. A couple of things we did find peculiar, though. Not sure why someone thought it was a good idea to put the electronic connections we all use for our phones, tablets, etc — to locate them where we usually find them on the nightstand next to the bed — but instead, this hotel locates those connections right on the headboard of the bed! (See photo) One late afternoon, I was relaxing on the bed, and suddenly, the lights went out - we thought we had lost power until we realized that underneath those ports on the headboard is a light switch which I had accidentally bumped into and shut off the lights — additionally, when my devices were plugged into that headboard, I somehow bumped one of the cords which broke it completely and I had to throw it away. The hotel was nice enough to supply our room with two wonderful bathrobes — however, there was not one hook available in the bathroom or the main room to hang them — so we did the next best thing which was to use the door stop in the bathroom located near the top to hang our robes (see photo) And not sure who thought it was a good idea to make the entrance to the bathroom something you actually have to step over — I realized it was there after banging my foot on it 3 times - I finally learned my lesson on that one! The person who checked us in, Xuexue Liu, was very sweet - we were shown to our room by someone who brought our luggage and when I asked “tell me about the room,” we weren’t told how the thermostat worked — outside the bathroom was what looked like a thermostat but with no way to adjust it. On a different wall was a knob with no lettering that we weren’t sure what it was used for but we did discover that if we turned it one way, nothing happened and when we turned it the other way, nothing happened. Apparently, the floor in the bathroom was heated but we never were told that, didn’t feel that nor did we have any clue about any type of floor adjustment for that heat. Our first night there, we did spend some time in the bar area and the guy who helped us (I think his name was Willem) was absolutely wonderful! He was delightful and answered the many questions we had about Oslo.
