Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs, California

Celebrating its inaugural opening in 1936, Palm Springs' Colony Palms Hotel (originally the Colonial House) was a haven for old Hollywood and the international jet set. After careful restoration and renovation, the hotel reopened in 2007 with the bravado of a Prohibition-era speakeasy and the charm of a four-star luxury boutique hotel. With names like Purple Palm Restaurant and "Palme D'Or Residence" paying homage to the hotel's historic past and VIP visitors, the old becomes new again at Colony Palms Hotel. The hotel's 56 guestrooms and suites feature stunning mountain views, oversized bedding with custom designed Turkish Suzani headboards, and Italian linens. Plush white towels and Signature CPH bathrobes offset the cool marble countertops and oversized vanities in the bathrooms, while bath products by C.O. Bigelow create an en-suite spa atmosphere in every room. Your posh accommodations become your personal theater and entertainment center with iPod docking station, high-definition televisions and complimentary wireless Internet. At Colony Palms Hotel you are invited to pursue every pleasure with Indulgences—additional details to make your stay unique and unforgettable, including chocolate-covered strawberries, flowers, and champagne service for two upon arrival.

At the Colony Palms Hotel classic charm and contemporary elegance come together in every detail, from the oversized red-rimmed linen umbrellas surrounding the poolside lounge chairs to the croquet games set up along the property. Purple Palm Restaurant and Bar overlooks the garden and the pool, while low hanging lights and overstuffed purple cushions create a lounge-type ambiance where the menu is as timeless as the atmosphere. The Moroccan-inspired Spa at Colony Palms features four treatment rooms, a fitness center, and a professionally trained and certified staff to ensure your every moment is refined and divine. Facials for men and women, massages, salon services, and specialty treatments are available for every ache, pain, and mood, so allow yourself to be pampered. Less than two hours from Hollywood, Disneyland, and the most renowned landmarks in Southern California, the Colony Palms Hotel is ideally situated for shopping, sightseeing, and soaking up the "Golden State's" internationally acclaimed beaches. Or, if you are unsure of where to begin, the hotel's concierge happily recommends the trendiest hotspots or the quiet, intimate spaces to set the mood. At Colony Palms Hotel, Old World glitz and glamour still reign supreme, but today, you are the star.

We wanted to avoid a "scene" hotel, we didn't want a "chain" hotel, and we didn't want to have to stay out in Rancho, based on reviews and their website, we chose Colony Palms. We could not have been happier. CPH is an adorable, small scale boutique property with a gorgeous pool, beautiful grounds, and a lovely restaurant and bar staffed with charming people. Our junior suite was spacious, had a large walk-in shower AND a claw-foot tub, lots of closet space, a comfy king bed and a fireplace. The room was on the first level of the main building (right next to the temporary reception area), very convenient to the pool, the spa, the restaurant, the complimentary coffee service in the morning, and the parking valet. Valet parking is also complimentary, which is a nice bonus. We walked to dinner three out of the five nights we were in Palm Springs to spectacular dining (Copley's, Workshop, and Jakes), and to breakfast at Cheeky's. We chatted with the general manager one evening while we were waiting for our car, and she could not have been more gracious. Honestly, this place met or exceeded our every expectation.

We arrived at the end of March for a one night stay; a treat for my husband before we spent a week with our grandchildren. The hotel had had a flood in the entrance, so our first view was a blue dropsheet hanging at the entrance. Front desk staff had been re-positioned in a nearby room. They were very polite but seemed overwhelmed. Getting the suitcases up the stairs was a bit of a trial as they were steep and narrow. Our room was rather small and dark with no view of the lovely pool area. There were tables and chairs out on the veranda which we did use which provided a view. Our bed was very comfortable and there was a small sidetable near a comfy chair. However, the shower stall had a hair left in it....eew. Coffee and hot water was provided near the pool but for two hours the hot water flask remained empty. I reported it, but nothing happened. The outstanding feature of this hotel is the beautifully maintained grounds. There is something to delight the eye around every corner. Would we come back? Certainly to Palm Springs, but to this hotel, probably not. There are lots of others to choose from.

We returned recently from a nine day stay at the Colony Palms Hotel. It was our first visit there but will definitely not be our last. The Colony Pams is "first class" in every respect. We thoroughly enjoyed our casita (relaxing in the jacuzzi while watching the hummingbirds fly around the honeysuckle) as well as the pool. The restaurant (Purple Palm) exceeded all our expectations! Armed with a list of neighbourhood restaurants provided by friends we began venturing out shortly after our arrival. We quickly discovered, however, that the Purple Palm had no real competition and for the remainder of our stay it was breakfast, lunch and dinner there. As others have noted, however, what makes this place special is the staff -- both in the hotel and the restaurant -- without exception they were competent, professional and friendly. We would like to particularly thank Karen at the Front Desk as well as Patsy, the assistant manager at the restaurant and her co-workers, Jeff, Ben, Michael and Patricia who provided impeccable service, We are looking forward to our next visit.

The hotel is lovely with old-world charm. We stayed in a casita that had a private patio just off the beautiful pool. The rooms and grounds are lovely. The Purple Room, located within the resort, is fantastic. It's upscale dining at its finest. We stayed during one of the busiest weeks of the season--last week in March--and experienced a few service issues with bar service and room cleaning. But, all in all, a very good experience.

Pool had babies with diapers on in it. Gross. Not a romantic getaway. Plan on lots of families and screaming children. Food was fantastic though. Did not get promised casita with tub until I insisted on moving. Staff seems very overwhelmed but are all very nice.
