The Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs, a Moroccan villa built in 1924, is a rare find. Scottish painter Gordon Coutts had been in Tangiers, and wanted to bring the style of the North African desert to this Southern California one. “Dar Marroc”, as he called his resulting escape, thus became a cultural oasis for local celebrities from Errol Flynn to Rudolph Valentino, and was restored in 1989 as “Korakia” (“black crow” in Greek). The house is a rare 1918 California adobe, with a keyhole-shaped grand entrance and ornate, Moorish wooden doors that whisper of glamour.

Korakia was totally my jam! From start to finish, the "Korakia Girls" will take care of you. Upon check-in, after passing through the beautiful courtyard, they provide a delicious mint tea (spiked with vodka if you like, though I passed on that) in a Moroccan glass. My knees were aching from a few days of hiking, so upon request, ice bags were waiting for me in the freezer in the room. Each room is unique, but all are equipped with a Victrola and a selection of records. (If you want, you can find more in the lobby). I was pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorites already in the room and playing as they brought me in. (Nice touch!) There are free bikes for riding around downtown, which is within walking distance, but it was fun to use the bike for exploring. Every morning, they leave a thermos of coffee outside your door with a handwritten note, and in the evening, a small gathering of lavender is delivered, with a tag holding a Native American proverb. Also in the evenings, the grounds are lit with candles and classic movies play in the courtyard. There is yoga, heated pools, a bar, food delivery service. I went alone this time but would love to go back with friends.

Pros: Perfect location Quiet Wonderful staff Every room is unique Lots of character Lovely pool and fireplace area Cons: At the top of our price range Had a wonderful Thanksgiving week at Korakia. Walking distance to downtown Palm Springs. Can also borrow bikes to go anywhere. Stayed in the Artist room, which is huge, with very tall ceilings, and lovely views of the mountains and sky, painters easels and no noise. Our side of the hotel had 6-8 rooms with Moroccan architecture. The other side across the street, has an Italian/Greek design. Very nice staff. They hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for guests which was fantastic. Ended up at about $500/night total, which was pricey for us, but a bargain for Thanksgiving week in a place as nice as this, and perfectly located.

We stayed one night for my birthday in the Adobe Room. Upon arrival, we were told that the “Mediterranean side” of the property is closed due to a private event. Pretty disappointing since we chose this hotel to experience all the amenities and paid $500 a night for it. We were also told by the staff that they will play a movie outside the room by 7pm, we waited until the 7:30 pm by the pool for the movie but nobody played it. When we asked the front desk, they said they only do it in the Mediterranean side. The bathroom in the adobe room is also really small. Hard to use the toilet because of the space. The main bathroom light was also flickering. We were only offered one breakfast choice during breakfast.

My husband and i have vacationed in Palm Springs for the past 25 years and have stayed at multiple charming places - however Korakia is something else - the experience is absolutely magical and we have made it a tradition to stay in the Naish House as it is truly special. If you are looking for a Zen experience with total relaxation this is your place! It has become our Happy Place and there is no way we will ever stay anywhere else - the amount of attention to detail is absolutely stunning at every turn - if you appreciate beauty, simplicity, relaxation, friendlies, lovely music playing throughout the day, peace and quiet plus some oƒ the most stunning views of the mountains, skies, trees, flowers, birds - this is the place to stay. We cannot wait to be back :)))

The hotel if you can call it that does not live up to the Instagram hype and good PR. This feels more like a bed and breakfast with hotel pricing. With so many other great hotels a stones throw away with full service restaurants, drinks, coffee etc I would not recommend staying here. The breakfast was bizarre. Only two choices which were being made by the reception workers was a blue milk oatmeal with uncooked old fashioned oats. If you want other food they tell you to order DoorDash or they’ll do it for you and change it to your room. If you want coffee or espresso forget about it. Our room was over $500 a night and it was so small you had to crawl into it and the bathtub was basically just a tiled hole in the floor with no separation from the shower. There are two small and cold pools and on one side you can’t have cocktails because I guess they don’t have a liquor license over there? And you can’t walk across with a cocktail from the other side. It was so hard to find anyone who worked there and when you did it was like you were bothering them or asking a big favor. Also not sure if this is a recent Palm Speings thing but the mosquitos were completely out of control. I was eaten up within the first hour and they have some natural spray that doesn’t work and no cortaid to help after you get bitten. I would definitely not stay again or recommend esp when there are so many other great portions right there like Holiday House, Casa Cody, The Thompson, The Avalon, Ingleside etc.

My husband and I were thrilled to find a deal through Luxury Link making it possible for us to book the Orchard House, the premier room at Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs. We just got back from our trip, having spent 2 wonderful days in that beautiful room. The property itself is gorgeous as well. And all within 2-3 blocks of the main restaurant district on S. Palm Canyon Drive. We walked to dinner every night and when we returned, the romantic grounds are lit by Moroccan-style candle lanterns. It's truly a sight! The pool areas are pleasant and water is available during the day, although they could refill the ice and cups more frequently. We also received complimentary fruit smoothies while laying around the pool. The breakfast was served in the quaint courtyard outside the Mediterranean side of the property. The second morning my husband went over to the office (there are no phones for calling, but it wasn't a big deal) and asked if we could have breakfast delivered to our room. About 15 minutes later a nice gal showed up at our gate with hot breakfast on a tray. The breakfasts were by no means fancy or gourmet, but they were both hot and tasty. And there were plenty of oranges, likely from the citrus grove inside the Orchard House gate. But the best part was our room. The pictures online don't do it justice. The space is large and feels both rustic and luxurious. Once inside the gate, closing a few curtains makes the space completely private. We sunbathed on our veranda and read in the shade of the private citrus grove. It would have been nice to have used the waterfall-fed whirlpool, but it itsn't heated and didn't get warm enough to enjoy. We figure they must change the water after every guest, so if you stayed for a week or if it was summer, the water might get more pleasant. We never used the dining room, but enjoyed have the kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator/freezer. It made it possible to eat lunch of cold cuts, cheese, bread and fruit. The atmosphere was perfect for it and made the vacation more affordable. Overall we had a wonderful time. Korakia Pensione was just the place to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. It's a splurge, but we highly recommend it. -A. Shrive
